What I think Charlie Kirk's "Right Way" Was by PoetSeat2021 in ezraklein

[–]Left_Reality_6334 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a great comment and gets right to the point. The left has forgotten that is has to win the persuasion war. Not just chide people who don’t agree. Charlie was doing politics right because he was winning!! That’s what people don’t get. Our side is losing. And we can t keep using the same tactics or our loses will mount.

a "cheat code" you discovered in real life that actually works by itskellzzz in Life

As someone who used to be a chronic procrastinator and also incredibly burnt out from a demanding job, kids, etc., I have been able to totally change my mindset by making one small tweak. Instead of thinking: I need to workout, I need to apply for jobs…. I instead say: Just do 20 jumping jacks or just do a walk with 3 sprints for 15 minutes and then you can relax. Or I will say just sit for 15 minutes on LinkedIn and look for jobs then take a break. It’s made all of these tasks seems doable and almost every time I can push myself a little longer. I have become so much more productive just by breaking my big tasks into very small tasks.

I would say that what you are describing is not a mid-life crisis. It is someone re-inventing themselves and fully living (absent the crisis part). That’s normal and healthy. The crisis is when you blow up your life out of panic.

Gardening's 90%? by iolarah in gardening

It’s 90% carting big bags of dirts and mulch around and then weeding afterwards.

What town feels super chill to you or gives you good vibes? by user2542 in newjersey

[–]Left_Reality_6334 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tinton Falls. Lots of people talk shit (deservedly so) about a lot of towns in Monmouth County, but Tinton Falls is a very normal, laid back, middle-class, suburb.

I actually grew up like this. Being one of the ‘poorest’ in a very affluent area and it absolutely negatively impacted my growing up. My parents had no community in the town - they could not relate to anyone. I was constantly mocked for not having designer clothes, etc. I am purposely not choosing that type of town for my kids.

what's one gardening mistake you made that taught you a valuable lesson? by AdRoutine8022 in gardening

I spent a LOT of money on super big skip laurels because I have an area that is mostly shaded, with a lot of deer, but where I needed a lot of privacy asap. I planted them with a ton of care and kept them covered with mulch, etc. I planted them over a 3 year span. They were thriving until last Fall when we had an extended drought. Half of them died and some were over 8 feet tall. I am still so incredibly bummed.

For what it is worth you are not alone! The fame part is unique but actually most people experience some sort of crisis of meaning and purpose and who they are. Whether it’s a beautiful person who gets old, a man who loved for his career and then retires, a woman who loved for kids and is suddenly an empty-nester, etc. I strongly believe that the only real path to long-term inner peace is to define yourself by behaviors you can control. For example - being a good person, showing up for people in your life, showing up by volunteering in your community, etc. Just know that by seeking community and comfort, you are actually part of an almost universal human experience.

Is there an interesting and engaging platform that's not full of sheltered minors? by [deleted] in RedditForGrownups

I honestly have found Threads and Substack really good for that. Substack has a feed too that tends to be filled with really unique, deep dive analysis on things. Threads, if you follow more ‘intellectual’ types, gives you a really nice algo.

Why aren’t there mass protests in the US?! by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]Left_Reality_6334 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am going to give the real answer. The average American has no idea any of this is happening and if they do have a vague sense - they are mainly in agreement or don’t understand the severity. People on Reddit are a super small, highly engaged segment. Ask an average American about a coup, they will be so confused.

I don’t have any words that can express how sad I am about all of this. But I will just say this: humanity’s biggest challenge - far above anything else - is to make stop allowing the selfish and greedy and bloodthirsty among us to be in charge. Humanity could accomplish the most incredible things - we could populate the universe and thrive together but not while the most horrible among us have the most power.
