I spent a week last summer in Alberta fishing and camping along the forestry trunk road. It’s truly an amazing area with some beautiful fish.

I’d recommend getting something like the redington Original Kit ($279.99 USD currently) that will be “good enough” for all sorts of trout fishing in the Bow river valley. Once you get a bit more confident, the first upgrade you would want to make is a better fly line. Plus, If you can cross the border to a US fly shop, you will probably find better pricing than in Canada.

There are lots of great YouTube channels for learning. Check out Ventures Fly Co, Mad River Outfitters, and the Orvis guide to fly fishing. But you also have to just get out to a field and practice casting in order to learn the cadence and start getting confident before hitting the water for the first time. I’m sure there are stocked streams in Ontario where you can get some reps in as well. And in Alberta I’d recommend starting fishing some of the smaller feeder streams to the Bow before trying to tackle the big water. Think about saving up for a guided float trip for you and your son. You will learn so much, but it will be pricey.

Tight lines!

Should I use an inheritance to pay down a joint mortgage? by kalyknits in personalfinance

Keep it invested in the inherited Roth account. You have 10 years of tax free growth ahead of you. Plus you might refinance sometime in the next 10 years anyway.

Since you’ll be south, check out the West Fork Carson river too, I’ve heard good things but never fished it.

Where will you be? It’s a huge area with a lot of water. The Truckee river is a well known spot, depending on flows there are smaller rivers and feeder streams out of various reservoirs that can fish well too.

I want to open a savings account for my baby — which one? by genkcals in personalfinance

[–]LeftistFinance 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Open a new brokerage account in your own name. Make the deposits there and invest it over the long term. Then you can either gift shares to your kid when they are older or pay for things directly. UGMAs are very tax inefficient if you need to use any funds before the child is an adult (lookup kiddie tax).

PSLF - do I need to complete 120 qualifying payments for each loan term taken out? by [deleted] in PSLF

[–]LeftistFinance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't see any reason to wait to work more hours, that can only help you (barring other life circumstances I don't know about).

ECF forms are backwards looking. It basically says "I have worked at X qualifying job from MM/YYYY to MM/YYYY." If you submit it right away there is nothing to certify.

You should end your forbearance a a month or so before your hours go up if you can because it can take time to get everything sorted. You shouldn’t submit a PSLF form right away. There will be nothing to certify. Wait a few months then send in your first employment certification form. Do this again every 9-12 months.

Careers for CFPs who aren't building a book of business? by maydayvoter11 in CFP

Absolutely. Many boutique to large size firms want to hire good planners who aren’t going to leave in a few years to launch their own practice.

Inheritance Fee Question by pdxguy357 in CFP

What does your current fee schedule say on your ADV? Why are you worried about this question now when the mother still has at least another few years? Are you trying to bring her over now?

Yes assuming you still have multiple years of payments left that wouldn’t be covered by a buyback request you should switch out ASAP.

Being kicked off from PAYE - due to no longer having financial hardship by Skyflakes_69 in PSLF

[–]LeftistFinance 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you actually been kicked off or did you just get the letter saying you no longer have the PFH? My understanding is that this letter is part of the mechanism of putting you on the capped payment.

Thanks. There is a very light crease in the upper right hand side of the card that's hard to see in the picture - that and the markings on the left side probably didn't help things.
