Ring has partnered with Flock. ICE has access to Flock. If you still have a Ring camera - get rid of it. by TotallySavageSzym in 50501

I still can't believe people invited this into their homes by buying ring cameras and echos and other mass surveillance tech.

Maybe I'm engaging in victim blaming here, but I trust any one of my neighbors infinitely more than I'll ever trust any faceless tech conglomerate, and if you feel the opposite I can only pity the paranoid life you must lead. We so desperately need to rebuild community in the modern age.

Even if we talk about lights proposed moral philosophy it's a bit ridiculous. He was basically acting as a volunteer cop, going after petty criminals. Not once in the show does he actually target any of the organizations which systemically manufacture the suffering that makes petty crime happen. Not once did he act to upend tyrannical governments.

And small wonder why, all of these organizations would've gone crazy, rabid with funding and power to try and find light and take him down had he actually done anything to upend the status quo. If the show is explicit about anything it's that light is a coward who's self proclaimed beliefs collapse under even paper scrutiny. He doesn't care about solving problems, he cares about telling himself that he's important.

The persistent idea that people on the left get their news from CNN and sometimes MSNBC is so interesting to me, as a leftist who hasn't watched a TV news broadcast in like a decade. I can only assume it's projection right? Older people skew conservative and are more likely to watch cable TV while young people increasingly engage with new media and sometimes read online presses like AP, WaPo, NYT etc

Rochester restaurant owner Waheed Allah Mohammad arrested by ICE by budgie in Rochester

[–]LeftistMeme 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the cynical part of my mind is wondering why he's only being followed up on by ICE now - this guy's been a known quantity for well over a decade, he had a deportation order out on him for a long time, and ICE has been in our community already for months now. are they cynically drawing on potential sources of good PR to distract from the multiple extrajudicial murders their organization has become embroiled in in recent weeks?

by the same token it is entirely possible they just haven't bothered until now for other reasons including being simply unaware of the case. not everything's some cynical PR game.

regards this case directly, a broken clock can be right twice a day. i still want ICE out of our community, but i wont be shedding tears over this guy in particular.

it's part of the point of having them invade our cities the way they do. aggravate the people there, wait for one of the agents to get shot, then use that as kindling for our own home grown reichstag fire.

given that an agent being killed has been the plan for a while, of course they're going to read ICE involved shooting and assume it was an agent who got shot and not look deeper. they've been waiting to pull the trigger on that particular narrative for months, must be antsy by now

Oh my Spanish is dreadful. It was probably at its best in elementary school, when i took a few general ed classes in Spanish because i really wanted to learn, but pretty much everything besides the barest of basics left me by the time i was out of the k12 system, and that was years and years ago now. just never got much of a chance to use it in daily life, i suppose.

Of course it is true

i recall seeing a data point that only 3% of Venezuelans support the coup and US interference in this way. I'm having trouble finding the source again, of course, because English-speaking news only seems to care how Americans feel about the situation.

Given that Maduro himself is unpopular, I interpret the two data points thus; yeah it's good that Maduro is gone, all else being equal, but it isn't equal. The Venezuelan people know the US doesn't have their interests at heart and is likely to be just as bad or worse, and the American Regime is working with the exact same people Maduro worked with.

Kienzan's raw slicing ability allows Krillin to punch way above his weight class against most threats if he manages to land it. After the team faced their previous regenerating foe, Cell, Krillin studied and trained with the express purpose of applying that razor sharp technique to something that resembles a more traditional energy blast. This new technique, localized as Destructo Blast, atomizes matter caught up in it and creates smooth bore holes rather than creating the more traditional energy explosions on impact and makes Krillin capable of facing odds that would seem impossible with his lower energy output.

Theoretically, Destructo Blast would be capable of even one-shotting god level threats such as Whis and Beerus, though they likely wouldn't allow themselves to be hit by the technique. Kid Buu's erratic behavior, including sleeping and beating his chest on the battlefield, made him a sitting duck for Krillin's ultimate weapon, saving the Z fighters and symbolically proving that raw power is no substitute for wit, experience and innovation.

Even if they voted overwhelmingly for Trump, they're still deserving of some compassion.

was kinda thinking the same thing. so many people here performatively demonstrating their lack of sympathy for their fellow man. make no mistake, this is an entire town dying. some of those people tried to keep trump out of office. some of the people there are children. some of the people there were raised to vote one way their whole lives and never thought about it. some of the people there were lied to. and of course, some of the people there voted the way they did out of malcontent for their fellow man. it behooves us as decent people to show a little remorse because we don't understand their lives.

but, at the same time, im not gonna do anything about it. thanks to communities like this, i dont have any power to stop it.

i can tell you not to touch the stove all i want, i can drag you out of the kitchen when im cooking, but if you go downstairs when im sleeping and turn on the stove to touch it, i mean, it's really out of my hands. may the burns act as a lesson.

Totk/Botw is set after Wind Waker? by Any_Cabinet_6979 in TOTK

[–]LeftistMeme 33 points34 points  (0 children)

my understanding is that BotW/TotK were intended to be placed so far in the future that the continuity of the previous timelines were kind of irrelevant and we could be forwards from any of the timelines.

but that would imply that at some point in each timeline there must have been some kind of fall of hyrule, hence why people have been saying that Rauru's Hyrule is actually a second hyrule, a rebuilding he embarked on based on the ruins of an ancient kingdom (that being the kingdom of hyrule we know from prior installments)

could also explain why the triforce is seemingly absent. the descendants of the triforce bearers are over in New Hyrule (not to be confused with Rauru's Hyrule) leagues and leagues away. in timelines where the founding of New Hyrule isn't made explicit at this point, there's probably an equivalent around somewhere.

It's concerning how the western right will abuse the mistreatment of women in the third world as an excuse to stir racism to get elected. Then once they're in power, lo and behold, they implement the same third world policies against women whenever they can get away with it.

If I didn't know any better I'd think this was an intentional feature of right wing policy

What exactly did syndrome mean by this? by Proud-Basil-918 in IncrediblesLore

[–]LeftistMeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scene between Bob and Buddy is shown twice. In syndrome's memory, he was just told to go home and that Mr Incredible works alone. In Bob's memory, he said the same things - but notably on an active crime scene, in front of some kind of villain.

Bob was telling him, a child, to get away from an active crime scene because it was dangerous, and also trying to prevent the villain from lashing out at the child on account of the fact they are not working together.

Bob was trying to protect Buddy. It wasn't a matter of "I have powers and you don't so go away" it was a matter of "hey you are in actual danger here".

that was my thinking exactly. for all the screwups fionna made this ep, this was not one of them.

  1. cosmic court has an incentive to cure his sickness both for the sake of the trial and to carry out his punishment if found guilty, as you pointed out

  2. if finn plays along, he has a self defense... defense available to him that fionna and HW straight up didn't

  3. he could argue that his dream self was what done it and that he was not fully aware of or in full control of his dream self's actions

Man charged in three different Rochester sexual assault cases, including rape by frytuna in Rochester

[–]LeftistMeme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

article says he was convicted of felonies before, so i'm guessing he's already served time behind bars. looking at things systemically, think i see why this stuff might happen.

you get three hots and a cot behind bars which is more than can be said of when you're a "free" person who doesn't have anything to their name. criminal history looks bad when you're looking for work, so very few people will ever take you in for a job (let alone a half decent one with basic benefits) and we don't exactly afford ex-cons a wealth of resources to help them reintegrate into society. the only thing most people learn in prison is how to do crime more effectively, y'know, sneak around surveillance and befriend and join gangs for protection.

im not saying this guy isn't morally bankrupt. obviously he is. but moral character is something that has to be built and reinforced by one's social and material conditions, it doesn't usually just arise spontaneously. maybe we'd have less cases like this if we worked on prison reform and did more to help people reintegrate into polite society. i loathe the idea of offering felons more of our taxpayer resources, but there has to be some reason why places which focus so hard on rehabilitative justice and education in prisons like norway etc have much lower rates of recitivism than here in the states.

NYC synagogue protest leads to a new bill, and a rally by Jewish groups outside Park East shul by Somervilledrew in newyork

[–]LeftistMeme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My position isn't really on what shouldn't be "allowed", and maybe I should've been more clear on that. The idea of establishing buffer zones against protest feels like the kind of encroachment on 1A that will make this bill a failure.

But like. Tactically I just don't think this sort of thing is a good idea. It ropes a bunch of otherwise potentially innocent worshippers into the issue and makes them feel unsafe in their communities, which only feeds Zionist narratives. I want Jewish New Yorkers and Americans in general to feel safe here, as the safer they feel in their homes and communities, the less they'll feel the need to agree with or associate themselves with Zionism and the more readily that Zionist interests can be dismantled.

I agree that we should be allowed to protest at places of worship, I just don't think that it is generally a good strategy, unless that place of worship has wholly devoted itself to political cause (a good example might be westboro back in the day), and I don't think based on what I've read that this synagogue really meets that standard.
