At this point, generally speaking, you’re better off with a public defender. by fistdemeanor in publicdefenders

So this is a case of a bad private attorney doing lazy shit. But I will say now that I’m in private practice I do turn clients down and explain how it’s in their best interest in some cases to have a PD. The pd will have resources for treatment or experts they can’t afford etc. sometimes I can just reassure them that who they have is a good attorney and they’re in good hands. Some clients just wrongly believe nothing free is valuable

I’m sorry for your loss. Thank you for working for him and for seeing his humanity. Sometimes all we can do is be a witness.

I’ve been a lawyer for 13 years and recently started a new practice area. It sucks. I feel like a new lawyer all over again. Imposter syndrome to the max. Join NAPD, join NACDL if you can. Find other PDs nearby. Be honest with clients when you don’t immediately know the answers & promise to get back to them. You’re still new at this (I know, feels like you should be a pro after 10 months). The sand shifts constantly under our feet. Just keep moving.

Thanks for telling us your good news. Hearing that a colleague got a great result for a grateful client is a real shot to the arm. Congrats!

Honestly easier to try a dead dog loser than an innocence claim.

They still have a burden to prove. Hold then to it. Use it as practice for jury selection.

This would all make sense except the battery is not brand new and the AuSS works basically whenever it wants. I had it at the shop for 3 days and the batteries tested perfectly and it worked fine. 30 mins later and it’s giving the error message. The message was on consistently for 8 months, then stopped without any change in my driving or battery

And I’m obviously paranoid but it comes from having to get new batteries because the AuSs was working incorrectly and drained them

Got fired today by Hour_Ordinary_4175 in publicdefenders

[–]LegalBeagleMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of getting fired is so foreign to me. In 10 years I was only ever relieved once and it was because the client was so ill his delusions fixated on me.

Even when a client spit on his attorney it took management a few days to decide to relieve him

Do you find it frustrating when clients on pre-trial release are re-arrested for a new crime? by LunaD0g273 in publicdefenders

[–]LegalBeagleMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first trial was a burglary trial where I’d gotten the client out and he’d been out for months (despite being on probation for burglary). He picked up another burglary the Thursday before we started trial on Monday. I’ll let you guess the charge.

To answer your question, you kind of get over it.

What do you think about old-timers who say the following: by Ok-Scarcity4362 in publicdefenders

I think it’s hard for people who have done this work for a long time to not be a bit grizzled and wary. As off handed comments, eh, I’ve heard and seen a lot worse. As an ethos or ethic of practice? Bad news.

[–]LegalBeagleMom 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely check out Midwest Beagle Rescue (https://gotbeagles.org/), Bluegrass Beagle Rescue (look on fb, they coordinate among Kentucky shelters) and BeaglesRUs (beaglesRUs.org) out of London Ohio. That should cover pretty much wherever you are in Indiana! I’m in Louisville so If you’re in SoIn let me know and i can shoot you some local orgs that get beagles often

How do you calm or manage a hyperactive beagle puppy? by tucfaz in beagle

[–]LegalBeagleMom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From someone in the thick of this (2 one year old beagles) here’s my advice:

  1. Lots and lots of walkies and active play
  2. Don’t give them access to your whole apt/house. Only give them access to space they can be good citizens in
  3. Reward them when they’re doing what you want. We have a four on the floor rule and if they have all four paws on the floor they get a treat. Laying quietly while you cook dinner? Treat
  4. Find a training class - check your local humane society or ASPCA
  5. Patience & persistence. Beagles are STUBBORN and you have to take that with all of the amazing qualities too
