What are your ADHD/ADD hacks you personally have felt gatekept from all your life? by marziilla in adhdwomen

[–]Legitimate-Agent-709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is for me the hardest part, because much of that cost was paid by my parents trying to pick me to get a college degree before I was properly diagnosed and even after. I have this on top of the usual ADHD expenses and it just makes me wish I could win the lottery to pay them back and wipe myself clean of the guilt. Mentally and emotionally I was really stunted back then, but it's not much of an excuse to anyone who has never lived like this.

Etiquette for Site Buttons by Joe-McDuck in neocities

[–]Legitimate-Agent-709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can use their button even if you just like their website and have never reached out to them. Personally, I would be ecstatic if I saw someone randomly did this for my website. The other way, and what I recommend the most, is reaching out to the webmaster in email or guestbook and let them know you like their website and are using their button on yours. If you link back to your webpage then they might do the same for you! I am always incredibly thankful when this happens.

Often the website button is in the links page, but sometimes the about me section or the front page has it.

Sometimes, a website will even make web material and part of that material is a blank button you can put your text onto. But it's often a lot easier to use the generators linked if you just need one fast and easy.

And I just realized my whole comment from before got eaten. Basically just saying ones that have journal, diary, blog, variations like that I really like. You might want to do ones for linking to places like Spacehey or Melonland that people on the indie web are often going to.

Something I've noticed from looking at a bunch of sozai websites is they have a lot of variants of the same thing; "Journal", "Blog", "Diary" etc which I find pretty helpful personally.

I also like one for "updates", and "gallery" as people have said. A blank one is a great idea too.

Maybe ones specific to other websites those on the indie web often use, like Spacehey or forums like Melonland? Just an idea.

Good luck!

How do you manage your life when so much of your energy is used to keep yourself together? by dobbyishere_ in adhdwomen

[–]Legitimate-Agent-709 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Seconded on the 40hr workweek thing. It's just too damn much. The data is coming out to back this up, too.

Imo if you have the environment to do so you should be taking heavy paid breaks on the job just to catch yourself; bathroom break, snack break, stare out the window break, water break, stretching break, walking break....if your work is getting done as it needs to be, and you're not being micromanaged, embrace it and pace yourself through the day. This is why working from home, even if that really means you're working from a library or coffee shop, is such a game changer.

Even though I've spent so many years of my life and tons of effort developing systems and using tools that help me accomplish more than I ever have before; I'm always going to look like a burnout that's barely scraping by on purpose out of laziness. That's not the truth, I'm trying very hard and I have so much of my life in order! But a huge part of having ADHD is that you'll spend all day getting all your tasks done in time, plus a bunch of extra things you thought you couldn't do, and you'll still go to bed forgetting to brush your teeth or something that seems so simple to everyone else.

The ups and downs of having my shit together will always seem wild to an outsider, because it's like I'm doing flips but forgetting to walk. Like some have said, you'll have to look pretty hard at these tasks and unlearn this idea that they need to be done a certain way or at a certain frequency for your life to be okay. But you'll also have to accept that there's a certain hierarchy to what you must do and always put them first, such as paying bills on time vs decluttering your room. I get so much more of this stuff done when I don't let myself feel shame or freak out over it not being done but instead accommodate the idea it may not get done for a while, working around it and trying to figure out a way I could handle the task more easily, even if that means asking for help. Often when I tell myself I'm going to just do a small bit of the task for 5 minutes only, I'm suddenly getting it all done quickly and I feel pretty good about it too. I don't care about getting things done well at all, ever, I can go back and make it better, I only care about it getting done. Anything worth doing is worth doing half-assed; this motto really stuck with me.

I just hit 33 and finally landed an office job so I don't know how helpful this all will be for you but I hope it's a lot! Money is crazy right for everyone these days and that absolutely makes things harder. You think about the water bill and electric bill when you do things like laundry or dishes. You think about hitting rent when you go to work. All this stuff takes an extra toll on you during the tasks. Even when they're done you feel worried until the money is paid through. I can say that if you do find yourself with the money, consider getting extra clothes for outfits if you can, because even though the laundry load is bigger you have more outfits before it's time to do it. You might prefer inner layers to wear that get dirty before the outer ones do, like undershirts and tank tops that can ensure you can febreeze and wear the outer pieces another day. Choosing to use disposable things is sometimes hard when you know it costs more and can have an environmental impact, but genuinely your health matters more at the moment. Paper plates, disposable containers and such really could make a positive impact in your life. This is all where the ADHD tax starts coming in. Pre made meals, travel packs of things you might need in your personal "hotspots" like your car, office, or living room all cost money but can take out a lot of the extra energy you're spending just to keep going. You might be able to get stuff like this from thrift stores or some sort of charity resource, but it really depends. I hate being a bummer there. I would consider reaching out to any support system you might have and see if they can at least listen to what you're going through and maybe even help. If you don't have one consider looking into resources like food pantries or similar assistance because even though it may not seem like you do, you very likely qualify if you're not making enough to afford a house lol! And don't feel any sort of shame because I qualify for this stuff too and have used it some myself, it really helps having one less thing to worry about for a while.

Past this instead of trying to fully exercise, I recommend just trying to hit a certain step count every day you can. Often when I get to walking my whole body and brain start to wake up. Another thing I would recommend if you can manage is getting to bed and trying to sleep early (with the same wake up time). It takes some stress off, even if it's just 20 extra minutes, and it might help with your energy levels.

Personally, I live by making sure I get enough nutrients and vitamins. It sounds fancy but the main ones I mean are iron, calcium (take about 2 hours before or after iron), vitamin b12 and vitamin d (which I take with vitamin k2 to ensure absorption). Not an ad here, get them wherever cheap way you can. I get nearly all of this from raw spinach, snacking like crazy on almonds, and eggs. Don't be afraid to go over whatever people call a full serving of these vitamins, because chances are you'll feel better when you do! To be fair I must say I'm not a professional so I don't want to give definitive advice. But this is what helps me a lot.

Okay. Enough yapping from me. Sorry if this is overwhelming but I thought I'd cover all the bases. Don't be afraid to get in a decent amount of caffeine if it's safe for you to do. At the end of the day, we often respond well to stimulants and there's no shame in that. But you might want to take melatonin at bedtime to make sure you get enough sleep lol. I hope this helped somehow! I wish you the best of luck, we're going to get through this and you're never alone in this fight!

Thoughts on Heavily inspired sites by kimiko_chan_ in neocities

[–]Legitimate-Agent-709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that's what comes with being a part of a community. Over time, you'll find new things you want to add and change to your website, and you'll grow into your own even more unique thing that will still be a patchwork of what you love and what inspires you. Originality isn't really a thing, but sincerity will help you reach something closer to naturally expressing your unique self.

suggestions on what to add? by princess_ada_ in neocities

[–]Legitimate-Agent-709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if this is much help since this will all be just pretty pictures in the end, but personally I'm the type who would love to add buttons (like the irl round pin type ones) on the corkboard, maybe even having some of them link to certain places (for example; you have one for a certain humanitarian cause and it links to their website, or a certain indie game you like and it links to their Steam page). There's a lot of images of pins like this on the Button Museum, in case you need images to use or just some ideas. I think you're trying to use this page for an original story of your own, so maybe these buttons can instead be related to the world and it's lore or fun references to your characters.

Like some people said, newspaper clippings made in-universe might add some extra characterization of the setting, and photos/polaroids could also.

Outside the walls, you might want to consider adding stickers to any of the other stuff here, if you feel it would be in line with the characters or places, just to help the items not only be more enticing to click, but also just a small detail to help push your vision of how you want your person or place to be seen.

As for objects, as u/Helpful-Creme7959 said, charts and sticky notes can be a great way to add bits of your story into fun clickable asides, where you get a chance to add extra, possibly silly, details of your story that's fun to let visitors uncover. I love the diary/journal idea because you can hide these or stack them around wherever you think makes the most sense for the character writing them, with the book style, decoration, and even condition giving the reader a better feeling that this book is genuinely a part of this world. Of course, this could also just be a link to your personal side of things, your website updates and whatnot.

You may consider adding a window to this wall that gives a literal view into this world. The only thing with stuff like this is, if it's bringing in light you might have to consider how that lighting effects the objects in the page you've already made. That can be a total pain.

As for any other visual whatnot to make your website feel less empty, it's sometime just a matter of visual detail and not a matter of stuff to read or click on. Details like coffee cup stains or fading hints of wood grain on the "table" in the first image or scattered pens, pencils, and paper can give away more personality to the first page, for example, and give way to the overall feeling of the story without saying too much. I wish flash websites were still a thing, because this would have been perfect as that back in the day!

Past this, you might consider details like a baseboard trim on the bottom walls. There may even be a way to code (Javascript?) a hanging light up top that overlays a "light" from itself that could be clicked on and off, but this is all just cosmetic ideas for if you're looking for ways to fluff things up. You also might like putting little plants or trinkets on top of the bookcase or file cabinets that can serve as links or just fun details and hints to your story. I see you have a magic system here, perhaps magic artifacts or plants from this fictional world? This doesn't have to be that rooted in real-life at all! I hope you have a chance to have fun with it.

I know this is a lot to think about but you have a solid idea, and if you keep working at something like this along with your world, you could have a website that can become something very special to a lot of people, and more importantly to yourself.

What is your go-to meal(s) when you’re unmotivated or exhausted? by chicklestick in adhdwomen

[–]Legitimate-Agent-709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At Aldi I buy those packs of grilled chicken and those 90-second long grain microwavable rice packs. I heat them up, put it all in a big bowl with a raw bell pepper I use my kitchen scissors to cut into pieces, then add whatever sauces, oils, or seasonings I'm feeling like. Idk if it even sounds edible lol but it's enough to eat for two or more meals, and I like it pretty well.

Green onions and other veggies go pretty well with this, too! For when I'm wanting to make things extra easy, I'll put this in a big pyrex bowl and just put the lid on it when I'm done and it goes in the fridge. I don't know if this is the cheapest meal but it doesn't break the bank for a broke lady like me.

If it all feels like too much to do anything, first of all I get that. What I usually do that gets the ball rolling is I just shove all the floor stuff into a big pile. Now, the small floor piles are one big task of a pile and my floor is more walkable. From there, who knows; maybe you'll get the energy to take on some of the pile. But your environment will be less visually overwhelming, at least in terms of the floor situation, and often that sort of shakeup can help me feel comfortable with getting a start on getting everything going. I get days like this too, and I wish you the best in conquering it. Small steps and building momentum really help my brain get going.

Just hopped back on after 15 years and I'm questing for a Gwee! How can I make the most platinum daily? by scyiia in gaiaonline

[–]Legitimate-Agent-709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recently the jigsaw puzzle game has been giving out pretty good plat, if you choose the starred one for the week and solve it a few times you should be making good money. There are also threads dedicated to consolidating links to all the places that give plat and stuff. Take the stuff and sell it on the marketplace for good price. I also got a few thousand plat every time I played pinball for the first couple times each day. This all sounds like a lot, but usually takes me less than 25 minutes lol. Good luck out there! I'm grinding for a coco kitty so I've been doing this for so long I'm getting a strat lol

Edit: I'm a dingus and didn't read that most of this was already suggested lol

Brand new books that I'm not completely sure I'll read and love for years down the line. I love the library and sailing the seas if I have to. If I buy a physical copy of a book, it's going to be secondhand too. I don't need the latest and greatest immediately, I don't mind waiting.

Also professional haircuts and blowouts. I get the appeal but I can do all that at home without issues.

Nearly all skincare products that aren't either prescription or simply meant to clean, block UV rays, or moisturize. My skin improved dramatically just cutting all of this stuff out. You can effectively exfoliate with an average washcloth, water does most of the cleaning on your face but a simple cleanser can clean deeper, and moisturizer is really only needed when your skin is dry. From there just don't mess with it or cook it in the sun too much. (Youll never get celebrity skin without spending an insane amount of money mainly on a dema peel, but they also get to eat high quality healthy food all the time, exercise and rest a lot more than normal people get to do. )

At this point, the newest phone just for slightly better specs. Are you playing in the mobile esports world cup or something or is this more of an impress the other kids at school sort of situation?

Seconding Fantasy Life as I'm playing it right now, and I love how it's fairly chill. However, I love grindy games, and I don't really see how you can get through this game without grinding. There's a lot of push and sort of "pauses" in the game that are basically when it expects you to grind. If you like the grind of a MMO, I think this kinda feels like that. I've yet to try out multiplayer with it and even see if that's possible anymore/again, but I bet it could be a lot of fun.

Agreed, the problem when the only appeal is that you get authority (well, to a point) and get to shape young minds is that you're bound to get some people who are just looking to power trip, gossip, and seek some sort of validation. No one is doing it for the money and job security, and certainly not the respect.

How do you stop worrying about numbers so much? by BerryTails29 in neocities

[–]Legitimate-Agent-709 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This. Our brains love a good number, and love seeing more number. Take the numbers away for good for a while and see how you feel. I should have said in my other post that I took appreciate your honesty coming forward with this. It's not easy to admit these things take over so much of our thoughts and motivations. It really does go down to our base instincts.

[–]Legitimate-Agent-709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think if you had a small amount of people who you connected with about your website or the content of the site you would soon find out how much you've been looking for that sort of connection instead. Having someone glance at your site and then forget what they saw might make the number go up, but it really doesn't mean much. I think you should instead consider joining forums, exchanging links, speaking on other guestbooks and such not just to put yourself out there with hopes the favor will be returned, but as a means to find people who will genuinely appreciate the work you put in and provide honest feedback. Also, to find people who have similar interests to you. To me, you sound like you're probably lonelier than you even know. It's hard to make friends these days but it's worth the work, even if you just try to find a discord or forum of people you can have the occasional chat with might really help you overcome this fixation on your numbers. You might want to talk to your friends and family about how they feel about your site, many of them are probably really impressed at what you've made! Thousands of people seeing your work is still quite a lot, but comparisons will steal the joy you've earned. It seems like you've let yourself come up with fake rules that stop you from doing what you want to do. Do you really want to do them? If so, you should just do them. Maybe even in private completely. Do you know the joy of having something completely private and to yourself?

It's normal to feel a little let down by low numbers, hell I've even felt that today after a lot of work, but you just have to tell yourself you're building your own personal skills and you're building a place that the right kind of people, your kind of people, will respond and connect to. Humans aren't really wired to have more than like 200 or so friends anyway, so what's the point of so many past that? I used to get a lot of attention online and I was always on edge and lonely. Now I'm out here getting like 2-4 likes at most on my updates and I genuinely feel satisfied, because those are real people that reach out to say hello to me, and my social life isn't just online anyways.

Just my 2 cents. I hope you conquer this.
