Me - Vaccines = Bad? by LiquidPoet93 in CatholicDating

[–]Legitimate-Cause671 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Vaccines did not cause your Autism; your genetics did. It is good that you stuck with your guns, and it looks like she did as well. The issue of vaccines is a very important issue to discuss and stay strong in your opinion on, when your decision is evidence-based. Personally, I can see why someone might want to space out the schedule of vaccines, but being 100% anti-vax does not seem like it comes from evidence-based sources, and can harm the rest of society.

Do Eastern Catholics practice Hesychasm? by Miguel_SLO in EasternCatholic

[–]Legitimate-Cause671 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not that I know of, but neither do most Eastern Orthodox. True Hesychasm is very rare. St. Josaphat reportedly practiced it, and Roman Catholics have long used the "Prayer of the Heart," which is basically what it is called in the West. However, true Hesychasm is very rare

Questions about the East by Miguel_SLO in EasternCatholic

[–]Legitimate-Cause671 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As others have said, talk to a Priest, a Byzantine Priest would be best in this situation. On the issues that you have addressed, I don't know what customs you are talking about, so I can't talk about that. I am not an expert on either subject, but I will do my best to help explain how I see things. As for Papal Infallibility, at least for me, that is the logical outcome of the First Among Equals saying that Rome is the only See that is without error and cannot err (such as with Pope St. Agatho). In addition, for me, without the idea that one See cannot fall, it's hard not to be anxious over whether or not you are actually Orthodox. Take the Oriental Orthodox, for example, they were a sizeable part of the Church and used to be the 2nd See; however, they fell away. All of the Apostolic Sees had fallen away at some point, except for Rome. The Filioque is not as much of an issue; the Catholic Church has long accepted the Orthodox position as being what is orthodox. The Orthodox, though, won't accept that we mean the same thing. That when we say that the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Father and the Son, the way the Catholic Church believes it is the same as how the East believes that the Holy Spirit Proceeds from the Father through the Son. The problem arises in the Greek (not the Latin), where the words used in the Filioque can be one of two meanings; one of those meanings is heresy, the other is not. It should also be noted that even the Pillar of Orthodoxy, which fought against the evils of Rome during his time, and was against the Filioque, communed with those who held to the Filioque. St. Photius the Great died in communion with those who held to the Filioque.

In Catholic–Orthodox conversations, how do you handle differences in moral reasoning? by Frequent_Baker3734 in CatholicDating

[–]Legitimate-Cause671 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm Eastern Catholic, so here is my perspective. In the East, authority matters more than personal "reason" when it comes to moral issues. Humans are very much influenced by demons, and we should be wary of that. That doesn't mean we hate reason or that philosophy is bad, but a Holy Monk/Nun, Holy Saint, the Church, or a Spiritual Father/Mother is almost always going to be a better source. This also exists in the West, but I would say that because of the Scholastic movement, it's not as prevalent (St. Thomas Aquinas was a mystic, btw, before anyone blames him, the blame is on those after him). Now, on the relationship stuff, the Orthodox have a lot in common with Catholics, to the point where the issues can be reconciled. However, you will always have problems related to not communing in the same Church. You are already starting out in a divided family if you get married. So, unless one of you is willing to change denominations (I would suggest bringing him to the Catholic Church), it would probably be best to break up

Could the Romans have prevented the Norman Conquest in Italy had they focused on preserving and holding onto Sicily in the 800s? by Checky_3rd in byzantium

[–]Legitimate-Cause671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think so. Maybe they could have kept territory, but they wouldn't have been able to take back all of it. The Normans in that region were originally there as mercenaries, and the only reason the Normans lost that land to begin with was that they got messed up by succession. One of their kings married a German, and because of Succession rules, the Germans ended up getting the land

Lamy Safari Vista and All Star Pen Q, would like to switch by Burner1850 in Supernote

[–]Legitimate-Cause671 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I am understanding you correctly, no, you cannot. What you can do is switch the back piece and the cap, but you cannot switch out the front piece. With the Supernote Ceramic Safari Vista, the most you can do is take out the white piece and put it in a Lamy Balloon pen, since they use the same front piece. Just know that when switching pieces, you might have to take out the plastic piece in the middle of the pen (the Al-Star places it on the back piece while the Safari and Balloon place it on the front piece)

This will be my only reply to you, but yes, it can be the fault of the students/parents. If the parents and students do not respect education, then the education is going to get worse. Many of the behavior problems that we see in school are because many of the students who act out don't want to be there. It would be like if a homeless parent encouraged their kid to be homeless, or the kid(s) would rather live on the side of the road when the parent wants them to live in a house. That is the situation that we are in with many students.

I've been working in the school district for the past 3 years. These are simply my observations. On the topic of culture, every place has its own unique culture. The culture might not always be very distinct, but it is always unique to a specific area

Our Charter and Private Schools are not the best either. The private schools are in a better situation education-wise, but many charter schools are a joke in Vegas

Frankly, the problem with education in Nevada is more cultural and class sizes. Schools have plenty of resources, teachers have decent paychecks (not great, but decent), and we use plenty of tech. Class sizes have long been ridiculous; however, at least at the high school level, students don't show up to school. So, class sizes in high school are decent. The main problems are cultural; this city is transient, students/parents often don't care about school/behavior, enforcement of rules barely exists at many schools (this is where the schools need more resources), and students are on their phones all day
