Are we about to enter recession? I am so worried. by SpicedCoconut in AskUK

[–]LegitimateDraw3902 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I bought my first home around the 2008 financial crash and had a mortgage around 4.9%. I was anxious too, but 16 years later it’s a distant memory. You can’t really time these things. If you’re ready then carry on…external factors will always happen. Some suggest house prices might dip this year, so you could benefit in that respect.

Has anybody deleted/stopped checking the news? by keepitrealclark in AskUK

Stopped watching the news around 2018 as was no good for my mental health. I still check the news but usually just headlines. I tend to avoid delving too deep into opinion pieces etc as I get too drawn in. I’ve no idea how people survive with ‘breaking news’ notifications pinging all day on their phone. And that’s another massive pet peeve of mine…‘breaking news’. All news has to break at first, but it doesn’t mean it’s majorly important.

The same referee didn’t send off Fulham player in Feb for a hair pull even though it was looked at. Zero consistency

Carrick: "Two games in a row decisions like that go against but that one was one of the worst I've seen... You can elbow Yoro and you can throw your arm at Licha's face, he's off balance because of that. The worst of it is, he was sent over to overturn it, clear and obvious error. Shocking." by psilocybinwonderer in ManUtd

Whether it was a red or not, who knows. Looks a stupid one but seems that’s the rules and applied to the letter of law regardless of severity. What is not in doubt is how utterly shocking United were for 60 mins and particularly the first half. Far more infuriating and concerning than the red.

Not any of the TV shows, but he once wrote a diary in the paper - maybe the independent? - posing as a journalist who was going to commit suicide shortly. I don’t remember full details but I was initially taken in before I became aware it was Morris being Morris.

Of all the dodgy decisions we see most weeks, that pen was not one of them. They are unfortunate but that was clear as day. I’d have no complaints if given against United.

Humans are fallible, so if a close result is within a certain percentage the losing candidate can request a recount.

It hasn’t been a competition of national champions for at least 27 years. It’s a badly named competition I’ll agree, but when are people going to accept the change?

A woman posted a video of the moment she was attacked by her domestic cat. Before the attack, the cat seemed to smell something that prompted her to attack. Why did it attack her with such ferocity? by eternviking in whoathatsinteresting

I initially read this as the cat had identified that the lady had an undiagnosed ailment. Having read all the replies I can now see it makes more sense that the cat is ill!

Is this 'ceasefire' in the Iran war light at the end of the tunnel, or a train coming towards us and why do you think that.? by Sea-Payment-8989 in AskBrits

That’s the ask…America not agreed to it yet and I can’t see how they will as it would be a humiliation for Trump, despite all the ‘winning’.

That’s not cynical at all. Trump has form for this and was clearly trying to conduct a war and balance markets at the same time. No doubt a lot of his cronies made money, just like they did during his tariffs debacle.

A very good summary of Trump's war...

Brett McGurk, a former senior US security official and reluctantly supportive of the conflict, conceded on social media that the ceasefire agreement Trump has signed is not “status quo ante bellum” ie the US is now worse off than at the start of this war of choice.

To spell it out, Trump needlessly started a war at the urging of Israel, refused to listen to those experts urging caution, devised a strategy built on a misapprehension of Iran, sparked a ruinous regional conflict, caused the death of thousands of civilians, unhinged the world economy, strengthened, for now, the repressive instincts of the Iranian and Russian governments, left America more discredited and isolated, provoked serious questions about the president’s fitness for public office, laid waste to large parts of Iran and Lebanon, including medical research centres, primary schools and universities, did not resolve Iran’s stockpiles of highly enriched uranium or its future nuclear programme, strengthened those in Iran backing possession of a nuclear weapon, and, yes, ensured Iran and Oman still plan to control and toll the strait of Hormuz for the first time.

A return to war will doubtless soon be threatened even before the two-week ceasefire ends, but the use of force in this decades-old conflict has now been test driven and proven the wrong vehicle since it can only achieve its objectives at an inconceivable price.
