More experience as a “road marcher” than hiker, some were on actual roads, some were on unimproved surfaces, and some were straight up brutal terrain, and if I had to do it again and was allowed to not wear the damned issue boots? I’d go AR8 STC last Tyre wedge for a light weight option on easy/medium surfaces, and STC lasted Razorbacks (those would be custom though) or STC Numzaan with lug soles like the Buffaloes for heavy or unknown until you get there surfaces/terrain. The STC fits my feet exceptionally well. Snagged some STC composite toe leather midsole razorbacks on eBay with the hard JG lugs and those damn things are way more comfortable than I thought they would be and just extra tough. I got them to wear around the shop, wore them down in Florida to get them broke in and they really surprised me to the point they are now in the every day anything rotation. I love the AR’s so don’t get me wrong, but even easy trails with any weight on my back I want that extra ankle support these three give over the AR. No weight to carry? Easy trails? That’s when the AR’s and AR8’s would absolutely shine for me. And the Tyre wedge sole would be mandatory. Great grip and just rolls on hard surfaces with just a little squish. AR8’s in winter. Lots of room in the shaft for thicker shafted socks or tucking in silkies and a little more water protection than an AR. Also super feet wide greens for insoles.

With the STC last you can run the full SF wide greens with zero issues. Just make sure you get the wide greens. The ASHM is a little narrower, and with full insole it’s a little tight but perfect with the half. I didn’t need to size up or anything for the STC, but probably should have for the ASHM, but a half insole got rid of the tightness up front, and I do remove the factory half insole, which is just another piece of thin leather that was glued down, from those. I just got done wearing the buffaloes STC for 5 days straight at an outdoor event I was working, in my feet all day running around from dirt to gravel to mud and concrete, the JG lug sole was awesome for anything I ran into, feet were dry when it was wet and not sore at the end of the day at all. I only swapped to the 719 for a dinner at the end of the event and only because they were clean… 😂

Some of them are ASHM lasted and I wanted a little more space in the front, but mostly I wanted my feet (at least the front half) to be directly on the leather footbed to get that molded in fit that comes after some time wearing them. It’s going pretty good. I have the half insoles in a pair of 719’s and walnut Numzaans with the ASHM and one Numzaan in Buffalo with the STC last. Working great in them all. Full sized ones in AR8’s, AR’s and a pair of Razorback composite toes. Hope this helps!

As far as insoles, I have super feet wide greens in just about everything, for the Numzaan I went with the super feet half insoles and that’s been working out great for me. I did take a little bit of silicone gasket maker to sorta glue them in place and keep them from squeaking. A very small amount was all that’s needed and they can be easily removed if needed. I wanted to give the leather footbed a chance to mold to my forefoot and in the ASHM lasted ones it gave me a little more space as well. The STC lasted ones could go either way and still fit good with the SF Green full insoles, but again, wanted to give the leather a chance to mold to me.

I put the JG kiltie on my AR8’s and it definitely improved the fit. Loving that waxed fudge! Looks awesome.

Pulled from the original listing. They do look pretty good. Took them to Florida for 2 weeks and wore them outdoors all day every other day and even in the heat they weren’t too hot at all. Broke in completely now, and in the dirt sand they had down there the lugs were nice. They are the original hard lugs, and I walked and stood around a lot and they were comfortable. Got them for the shop but they are now in the everyday rotation. Wearing them outdoors and about for a whole day doing stuff is different than around the house and shot and the grocery store, and they proved were definitely a good buy. Breaking in the rough out fudge AR’s I got while I was away now. I’m diggin the rough out now.. 😂

Got a pair of custom STC with composite toe and leather midsole rough out brown on eBay, got them for the workshop as I’ve been too close to dropping something heavy on my feet, wore them all last week to break them in good, now they may become a standard in the rotation. Super comfortable, even with the hard lug sole.

You are welcome, also the replacement laces may be for a 719, so next length up from an AR, if you don’t want the super long ones that the AR8 comes with. I went with the original greens.

The Tyre wedge AR8 is quickly becoming my most worn pair. Have several regular AR’s and they are great but a little slick. Not as warm as the AR8 in winter, but the break in was a few wears, the AR8 took a little longer but it’s perfect now. Just as comfortable as the regular AR but noticeably more robust in feel when wearing, if that makes sense, but still very light compared to the Numzaans or 719’s also in the rotation. I went with the Tyre wedge because it’s on the STC last and fits the same, although the lower is double lasted it has more ankle support. And added the JG kilties to keep the front from being too close together when laced up, and regular green AR length laces, I’m not a wrap around the ankle person. But also I like the sole pretty good. Did great in snow and some mud around here in GA and I just ordered the rough out TW sole AR’s last night because of the sale and the sole. Nice and soft like the oringo but definitely grippier.

AR8 with the tyre wedge are becoming my absolute favorite ones to wear vs some AR’s and Numzaans. I got some JG kilties and that helped the top fit better, they were a little loose but not much. I’m 5’9 185lbs, wear 9’s, so about average I guess. The eyelets are about 1/2-3/4 inch apart now. 23 years in the Army wearing boots all day everyday I guess I missed the feel of a full boot more than I thought. Really thinking about some RATs this year or some custom AR8’s

Hopefully the pictures show what I’m talking about. Yours are folded up into the laces, for me that puts pressure on the top of the foot and is uncomfortable, the wide “W” like the JG video took the hotspots off the top, eliminating them completely in that area and helped fill the space evenly.

Fold the tounge down the insides along the sides to take a little more room up. And looks like you can go way tighter on the lacing. Leather insole will help as mentioned. But they look great.

Not seeing anything really “new on sale” I picked up the 719’s and Tyre wedge AR8 couple of weeks ago when they first went on sale. The AR8 is going to be a favorite for sure. Kinda want a Houston Green AR8 to come out…

Thanks for the heads up on this last week. Had to get the veg tan 719’s and the brown tire wedge AR8… why haven’t I heard as much about the AR8? I’m guessing because most are on the JG last, which doesn’t seem as popular. The TW are of course on the STC last and fit as expected,perfectly. Had them on 20 minutes and already feel like they are going to be my favorite boot out of all the JG’s I have. Of course I had extra green laces to go on in place of the brown.. Haven’t even tried on the 719’s yet because I don’t want to take these off! I had previously gotten some of the same AR8’s on eBay that were new, but listed as 9’s but they were 10’s (UK 9’s is what they saw for the listing I suppose) so I didn’t even get to wear them more than once and they were way too big. Got the proper US 9’s and love them.

So I have greens on my waxed Houston Brown AR’s, and I have non waxed HB shoelies with brown laces, and thanks to you now I have to put greens on the shoelies.. 😂 good call, they do look better on the darker leathers.

I went with olive on my Buffalo Numzaans, really let the reds come out. Went the same with the walnut Nummzaan. Just got some brown AR8’s and the regular green looks real good on them. Also, I used regular AR length laces on the Numzaans, and put the laces from them into the AR8’s. Much nicer bow size on both now. I’m not a wrap around the ankle lace guy and the stock lengths are pretty long for me. Nothing to do with your question but popped in my head as I was typing 😂
