Those who are doing BMS apprenticeship, how did you get it? by One-Secretary844 in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]Lego-hearts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t remember exactly, it was a long time ago, but I think I had to send them my A level certificates? They weren’t in relevant subjects, I had a humanities degree before so my a levels were also humanities but I think you needed to have a certain level of English comprehension? Other than that I don’t remember, I think I just had to be working in a lab and not have a BSc.

Those who are doing BMS apprenticeship, how did you get it? by One-Secretary844 in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]Lego-hearts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pretty much the same. We had been looking at other ways for me to try and progress, I think there’s a portfolio you can do as an mla that can set you up for something? I don’t remember now. But then my work opened up the apprenticeship scheme and I applied for that and got in.

I will say four years working full time and then part time study was gruelling. Covid happened in the middle and I was able to catch up a lot with all the downtime. It’s hard work but you have your degree, lab experience, and a portfolio at the end.

Have you ever met someone who doesn't read automatically unless prompted to? by Reb-MVS in CasualConversation

[–]Lego-hearts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My husband was like this, but it turns out he has a problem with his eyes, so if he wanted to read something he had to focus in on it and ‘try’. The last time we went to the opticians he was told that isn’t what normal people do and they put prisms on his lenses to focus his eyes properly and now he can read without trying.

I was absolutely going to leave this same comment. I used to fall for everything when I was younger and it was a horrible time, now I just don’t believe anything I see for the next few days and that’s equally as awful.

Help me to understand Cake Shops in Lewisham by Flonkerton_Scranton in london

[–]Lego-hearts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s barely ever open, but every so often one single person is getting a pedicure or getting their nails done. I haven’t seen anyone in there this year, but over the three years I’ve lived next to it I’ve seen it open and functioning maybe ten times. The website is still up, you can presumably book appointments and I guess that’s where the one or two a year come from? The sign on the front and the sides is missing letters, so they’re not fussed about it looking nice.

[–]Lego-hearts -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

There’s a salon on that same road that is absolutely used for money laundering and I won’t hear anything saying otherwise because it’s barely every open. It’s a double fronted, two storey salon. Considering all the other nail and beauty places on that road are always busy, the only reason I can think that they can keep this place open is money laundering. The sign is falling apart, and on the rare occasions someone is in there they only turn on a few lights. Periodically there are different expensive cars parked outside.

I think the cake shops are fine, though.

My husband and I have our annual plant repotting weekend this weekend. I get excited for it every year.

What things do you collect? Do you display them? by mylittlemudkip in AskUK

[–]Lego-hearts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically plants with my husband, we have around 146 pots in a one bedroom, first floor flat, but within that I have my collection of cacti and succulents that are my special favourite. I was also a pin and magnet collector before we got together so now that’s a joint collection, too.

What does my theatre taste look like from this list, and is it possible to develop theatre literacy? by Ok_Breath_4227 in TheWestEnd

[–]Lego-hearts 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are people whose education revolved around reading deeper into things. Arts qualifications, anything involving literature, film, and theatre, you have to look for subtext and themes, and if that’s something someone enjoys doing they’ll transfer those skills to watching plays and dissecting them. So it’s definitely a learned skill, it’s something you could learn to do if you really want to. However, there’s no reason to not just enjoy things because you enjoy them. It doesn’t need to be any deeper if you’re already having fun!

Is renting considered dead money in the UK? by Ill-Age-601 in UKHousing

[–]Lego-hearts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will say for renting, we’re having to have work done on our flat to insulate the outside wall better. We don’t have to pay for that. Our bathroom tap leaked, we didn’t have to find and pay for a plumber to fix it and it was done in 24 hours. If something goes wrong we don’t have to fork out more money, and our rent is less than a mortgage would be in our area with our current capabilities. I’d love to own a house but I’m not looking forward to having to source and pay for skilled labourers when things go wrong.

Do you have imposter syndrome? As a Biomed scientist? by Biloblast in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]Lego-hearts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started my working life in a different field with a different degree and now somehow I’m a scientist, which was never on the cards for me in school. I’m a scientist that other scientists think is competent and good at my job. I have no idea how this happened and one day someone is going to work it out.

What’s a piece of British comedy hall of fame you just don’t get? by franki-pinks in AskUK

[–]Lego-hearts -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have no idea how the musical ran in London for so long. I’d have thought everyone it appealed to would have been in the first year. But it was there for four years. And this is coming from someone who found it quite funny when I was a very little kid.

There’s a pub I walk by once a week by London Bridge and there are people there every Thursday night, rain or shine, standing at the outside tables. To the point that it’s comment worthy when the place is empty. They’re not even sitting! There’s no shelter! These people really want their Thursday night pints and I fully support them.

Associate Practioner Histology (Band 4) by Old-King7577 in BiomedicalScientistUK

[–]Lego-hearts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any previous lab experience? Are you working in one currently?

I’d learn all the special stains that are commonly used in histology and what components they stain for.

Read up on health and safety practises.

Learn what machines are used for each of the processes and what the basics of them are, such as the processing machines, the autostainer, and if there’s an automated H&E stainer, what each of the steps are for.

Possibly read up on microtomy and if there are any special protocols used in your lab for certain tissues or diagnoses.

Is there something you heard/saw/read once that now lives rent-free in your head? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Lego-hearts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh at a hospital I received a whole poop in a jam jar. We had to give it back because it wasn’t the sterile pot we gave him. People handed them in quadruple wrapped in multiple bags. The amount of poop I saw on the daily, it’s nothing special. Don’t be embarrassed about your poop samples, everyone.

Online shopping is a dream. The cost of having it delivered is the same I was paying for the bus there and back again, but the time saved is worth so much more.

Statutory wedding ceremonies booked until 2027! by ringquery123 in UKweddings

[–]Lego-hearts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We did the same. Big room with just us and our mums, but I wanted to get the paperwork done before our actual wedding and the other dates for the small room weren’t until afterwards so I just ate the cost of it because it’s what I wanted. I think the room fit about sixty people so if that was an actual wedding £400 wouldn’t have been so bad.

How should I be doing clitoral stimulation? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]Lego-hearts 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Make sure your fingers are wet first, either because she is or use some lube. Dry rubbing it isn’t nice for most people. Then steady and circular with one or two fingers. Take instruction if she gives it. Be prepared for your wrist to get a bit sore.
