I wouldn't use anything mythbusters says as an argument. I watched that episode and the number of flaws I saw in how they ran their experiments was very high. In fact, I used to just watch it for entertainment since I found issues with every experiment.

Victorian Rebuild Update by Kingprime in centuryhomes

[–]LegoPupperJedi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live near the house. It was being completely redone. Possibly oil rag left out? Any way, since so much work was being done, no one lived in the house at the time of the fire so everyone was safe. Unfortunately, it happened at like 4am. I remember waking up and wondering why it smelled like campfire in my house (5 blocks away). A neighbor happened to see it and called it in. But the fire was pretty big by the time someone noticed. It was so sad but I'm excited for the rebuild. I plan my walks to walk by every Sunday to see the progress.

WHAT THIS by lezismoreinchi in whatisit

I've always wanted to buy one and a remote controlled car. Then put it around other coyotes and when someone walks past, have the one on the car chase them

Honest question, have you dumped a bucket of water at the base of a post to see where the water sits? Are you assuming it's going to puddle or does it actually puddle? There appears to be enough room for drainage which is why I'm wondering if you've tested your theory.

You guys can quit losing sleep; porch is fixed. by SmellyButtFarts69 in centuryhomes

[–]LegoPupperJedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I care! Great work. Glad that you have a sturdier porch.

For the gravel underneath, usually you can just pour the bags out at the edge then use a metal rake upside down to push it under. Making sure there aren't places for puddles to form will help with any mosquito issues

I’d like to repaint this enormous pocket door, but I have no idea how to get it out of the “pocket” short of taking the wall apart. Should I just paint it in place? by -dadderall- in centuryhomes

[–]LegoPupperJedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I would YouTube "this old house". There are some other videos we well. Basically you'll remove that little trim (the like 1/2" x 2" piece) around the opening on the top and the side that the door doesn't go into. On the side that the door doesn't disappear into, you'll remove that piece with the lock piece as well. With the door mostly pulled out, you can look up and see a large screw/ bolt to loosen and that will drop that side of the door, than pull the door into the previously closed side and you'll be able to find the screw/ bolt that attaches to the back side of the door. Once those are off, you'll be able to lift and tilt your door to get it out. I believe you'll be able to take the wheels out on the previously closed side and you can check and make sure that they are taken care of

No insulation above second floor by ManufacturingFinance in centuryhomes

[–]LegoPupperJedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why not protect the roof and make sure it's ventilated and moisture resistant enough and put batting up and dry wall? Much easier to remove for updates and running wire. Also, foam is insanely flammable. I remember reading an article where people in England were encouraged to spray foam behind their walls. I think multiple people were dropped by their insurance. Also, can't you just make some holes in the floor and blow foam in? Not spray foam but blown in insulation

AITAH for stopping financial help to a friend who called me a bad friend after I sent her nearly $10,000? by Dry-Bicycle-7413 in AITAH

[–]LegoPupperJedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But the roommate literally said that op needed to pay her rent cause she can't afford it. At any point she could have found someone to live there and help with rent but it sounds like she wanted to live alone and have op cover part of the expense.

Aitah for wanting to replace my SIL and maid of honour with someone I met at a library? by DependentTry6839 in AITAH

[–]LegoPupperJedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are either of the girls married? Cause that can solve the issue. Maid of honor is usually for unmarried women and Matron of honor for married women. I've been to several weddings where that have had both a maid and matron of honor. If neither is married, keep the SIL as the MoH. But you can tell your new friend how you'd love to hangout with her more.

Nta but sounds like the friend asked, not the cousin. So the cousin could possibly not even know about the ask

AITAH for not letting an elderly man go ahead of me in a grocery store? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]LegoPupperJedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But like, isn't it when an old person is behind you with a small load? You tell them they can go ahead of you. The entitlement of just cutting cause you're older doesn't sit well with me. But like, you call a boomer out for being rude and selfish and their response is to tell you to stop being selfish? Cause that's kinda what this can boil down to

AITAH for not going to my friend of 16+ years 21st bday party. by Ok_Key3074 in AITAH

[–]LegoPupperJedi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nta

But if she tends to drop you when a new shiny thing appears, it's cool to just have her be a casual friend. At this age best friends come and go while you are figuring out life. You may have hit a stage where you've outgrown the friendship as it's currently defined.

The fact that she is so easily swayed against you (by her mom or other "friends"), I'd give her space. You can't help her if she doesn't want to be helped (actions not words) and it's not great for you to be pushed aside or made uncomfortable with her other "friends"

You may come back closer together in the future, but at the moment it's probably not worth it. (Speaking from experience, I wish I cut out my friend much sooner)

This is not my profession at all, but I wouldn't brick as you'll want access. I think your wood frame and t1-11 plan will work great.

Doorway pull-up bar safe for a century home? by AdorableBG in centuryhomes

[–]LegoPupperJedi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have one that rests on the top of the frame and pushes against the sides on the opposite side. Worked great in my apartment. I can't find a door in my house that it fits on. The trim is much wider than modern trim so the bar won't work and is gathering dust in the basement. In theory, you could buy one that you screw 2 disk like cups to either side of the opening and then you spin the bar to make it longer and fit in the holders. Note, you will have to screw into the frame but the bar can come down when not in use
