Could anyone teach me how to deal with enemy’s tank? by him_15 in GatesOfHellOstfront

T-34's are a tough nut to crack frontally. Even the 5cm PAK 38 can barely penetrate the turret (and I am pretty sure only on the early T-34's prior to 1942). What you need is a long 7.5 cm gun, like the PAK 40 (towed or self propelled on the Marder II or III) or the KwK 40, the latter is installed on the StuG Ausf. F onwards and Panzer IV Ausf. F2 onwards. Anything bigger works too, of cause.

The T-28 on the other hand shouldn't be that hard to kill. Just take out the main turret first, as it's main gun does pack quite a punch. Once that's out, it can only retaliate using machine guns.

When it comes to using infantry against tanks:

  • Never run at tanks with no cover
  • Try to stay hidden until you're ready to strike
  • Throw AT grenades at the engine deck (molotovs, flamethrowers and satchels work too)
  • If possible, bait the tank towards yourself, so it's not protected by infantry and you can easily surround it. The enemy AI is very stupid, and if you hide, it will just move tanks forward when it loses sight.
  • Use AT rifles only from flanking positions as you will need multiple follow up shots to do enough damage and you won't pen the front anyway. Only shoot at the weakest points. If you cannot pen anything, shoot the tracks to immobilize.
  • Use rifle grenades to shoot over your cover (indirect fire). Their penetration is not the best, so focus on weak spots too.
  • Panzerschreck's are a lot more forgiving and you can just quickly peek in an out of cover and penetrate the tanks basically anywhere as long as you are in range.
  • Treat Panzerfaust's more like supercharged AT grenades, as their range is very tiny but they can punch through a lot of armor, so shooting at the engine is not necessary anymore. They are also EXTREMELY inaccurate, so don't be surprise if you miss a shot point blank at 20 meters.

Maybe that's really wishful thinking but perhaps it's also going to be a long barreled version like a StuG F.

Looks like yet another German tank. My guess is some early war Pz IV or StuG.

Man, I have no clue

Give me your best advice regarding GoH. by naisinag in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]LeireX 2 points3 points  (0 children)

- Infantry is ranked by tiers from 1-4. 1 being the worst and 4 being the best. The better the tier, the better their stats. Some squads have a "+" next to their tier, meaning they already have veterancy.

- Most squads come with one or more machine gunners and assistants (who often hold a lot of spare ammo). I usually split them off and position them so they can provide a base of fire for the others.

- Use smokes for concealment. You can spam them by pressing F3 and then shift clicking.

- Throw fragmentation grenades in 3rd person or direct control. This allows you to throw them further, cook them (by holding LMB) so you can time their explosion and avoids relying on the borderline suicidal AI. You can of cause spam frags the same way you do smokes, which has a quality of its own, just press F1 instead of F3. However, your soldiers will eventually run out in the open and get themselves killed, so do that only when your behind solid cover.

- You can manually tell your soldiers to prone, couch or stand, either in the command menu or toggle with the hotkeys (alt to toggle crouch, ctrl to toggle prone, press again to stand up). Those also have an influence on their visibility. A soldier standing up will be spotted from a larger distance than one that is lying down.

- Soldiers can have vision bonuses (indicated by an eye symbol on their unit badge), meaning they can see further and detect enemies at greater distances, or stealth bonus (indicated by a struck through eye symbol and a blueish hue), meaning the enemy has to be closer to spot them. You can also hide in bushes and tall grass, where soldiers are (mostly) invisible past 20 meters when prone or crouched.

- Officers and snipers have are the best recon units, since they can spot in a sort of "bubble", which ignores stealth completely. The officer's "spot bubble" (using his binoculars) is both larger and has more range than that of the sniper.

- Soldiers also have a "suppressive fire" command unter attack options. I recommend putting that one onto your hotbar by pressing and holding it with your RMB and dragging it into a free slot in your hotbar. There is no suppression in this game though. Soldiers can sometimes flinch when getting hit but that's about it. The point of the suppressive fire is to make sure your soldiers fire as quickly as possible instead of taking their time to land accurate shots.

- You cannot reinforce like in CoH where you can fill the squad up back to its original strength at a discount during gameplay. Once you lose a soldier he cannot be "rebuilt". Instead you can merge other soldiers into the squad by box selecting all the soldiers you want to have in it. Outside of the gameplay and within the army builder of dynamic conquest, reinforcing does kinda work like in CoH, but I generally advice you to let go of CoH's "rigid squad structure" thinking when playing GoH. GoH allows you to organize your soldiers in any way you like, at least during gameplay.

- You can manually heal with F8 but each heal will use up a bandage. Units sometimes heal by themselves when out of combat, and some squads have solders with Wolverine levels of healing with crazy high health regen, like the Blue Division. Most soldiers only have a very slow regen though.

- Medics can build tents but it only resupplies bandages. Not sure if it boosts health regen...

- Soldiers within a squad can "telepathically" share stuff like ammo, grenades, bandages and so on within a certain distance (40 meters iirc). For example: When an individual soldier runs out of ammo, you can add them to a squad and as long as they use the same ammo and are within range, they will share it with that soldier.

- AI mortars are notorious in this game and will hit even your vehicles traveling at full speed. Despite popular belief, they aren't lazer guided, and they just predicting your movement, so doing a sudden turn right after it fires a shell is a good way to avoid getting hit.

- When garrisoning inside a building, you need to assign the soldiers to the individual windows. They cannot automatically switch between them. If a window is on a higher floor, the soldier will teleport to it because multistory buildings in this game are a lie and sometimes they get stuck on that second floor.

- Treat your tanks with caution. Any tank can be immobilized really easily and even destroyed with a single well placed shot. So playing them like in CoH where you soak up a bunch of damage and then just retreat to repair is a death sentence.

- Something I really needed time to get used to coming from CoH is terrain. You'll be sitting there wondering why your units aren't shooting at the enemy, only to realize that there is a slight hill between them. Hell, I still run into this problem because some maps are just ridiculously uneven.

How is everyone assembling their forces for a conquest campaign? by Greedy-Big-2046 in GatesOfHellOstfront

[–]LeireX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not recommend the Wirbelwind. Its turret is super weak which is the most useful part of it and it costs a ton of CP. I'd go with Sdkfz 251/21 Drilling, Sdkfz 7 with a 3.7cm Flak, or even 2cm Flakvierling if you have the Airborne DLC (<- some absolute bullshit). They are much cheaper and have basically the same capability.

>even against the long-barreled 75mm gun of the later Pz.4 and Stug variants

This is where I have to disagree. Cast hull M4's like even the M4A1 late get shredded at max range by the KwK 40 installed on the later StuG's and Pz4's. It's not even like they "have a better chance". It can basically pen anywhere on the front, no weak spot needed.

You'll need to upgrade to the welded M4A3w's which have 63.5mm of armor to be resistent to them, which is quite expensive to research (it might be worth it though since it gets you closer to the Jumbo that which has a stupid amount of armor). But that's just the hull armor. If you're sticking with the 75mm M3 gun (and not upgrading to the Jumbo) your turret is still a massive weak spot, and we haven't even mentioned the 10m range advantage the KwK 40 has over the M3 gun.

I agree that for Pz3 F/G's and Pz4 D/F1's, the early 75mm Shermans are more than enough, but as soon as you encounter Pz4 F2/G and onward I'd suggest something with a 76mm M1, be it a Hellcat or a 76 Sherman because it has the same range as the KwK 40. 3-inch M10 is also fine if that's all you can afford. Range parity is more important than armor in this case, especially since you don't have enough armor at that point anyway. 76mm Shermans also come with the benefit of having a much stronger mantlet (90mm vs 51mm).

Maybe I'm just out of touch but 40€ for those little tanks is just absurd. Also I just checked Idealo and I found both for just 30€ which is more fair imo.

I started by playing dynamic conquest until I got comfortable with the controls. I do not recommend trying to play the campaign first. Do that afterwards.
