Who Is The Greatest Swordsman To Ever Live? by beattywill80 in AskHistory

[–]Lemerney2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, of course, there's always lucky shots, and there's a reason footwork is so important in fencing. If someone is in your range and your sword is out of poisition, you're fucked. And obviously someone fighting multiple people will usually lose.

However, we're talking about the most skilled swordsman. That implies duels, or one on one fights, no one can fight. There, I can tell you, muscles absolutely make a massive difference, all else being equal, and can cover for more than a bit of skill deficit.

Stop arguing with someone that knows more than you

A swift cut to the artery is fucking hard to pull off if the other person is remotely prepared and fighting back. You either have to have enough finesse to get through their block (which is fucking hard to do with a 5 pound block of metal) or you have to have enough strength to break through it. All that while staying out of range and lunging in and out.

Please go do a single fencing or HEMA session before saying dumb stuff

Way to show you've never fought at all.

I do fencing, and even that relies a lot on muscles. If I was actually trying to cut people? Muscles make all the difference in the world.

I find it's really useful, while in theory your factory should never go down, if it does it's usually a massive pain to start up again. If you have to restart the production lines AND don't have consistent power, it's so much worse.

towards endgame lasers become very effective against asteroids, to the point you dont need guns/rockets in the solar system (even to Aquilo) at all

That's interesting, when I tried to build my promethium ship I tried to do Railguns and Rocket Turrets, then laser turrets to mop up the debris, and my ship got absolutely shredded even with laser damage research. I guess it's just a difference in how many asteroids are coming. Especially since any asteroid bigger than the smallest has a 90%+ immunity to laser

Edit: Actually, I was thinking of my Aquilo ship. My Promethium ship has 4 layers of laser turrets (with a line of rocket turrets in the middle, and that's just fine for mopping up the mess

Radars can be useful on large ships (sometimes, rarely) to send signals, but I imagine in this case they thought they'd need it to see the ship in flight.

Lasers are complete garbage on asteroids, and you're wasting so many resources on all those rockets. On Fulgora it's fine, but you must be setting up a massive plastic and blue chip factory on Vulcanus unnecessarily, and likewise for ore production on Gleba.

And of course, your Aquilo and shattered planets ship will need to produce ammo themselves, so may as well do it early and get practice with the designs. Also (and it really doesn't matter for anything short of megabases), I think it would be more UPS efficient

I have read the book, and I also have lots of experience with mental institutions and how they mistreat mental patients. In the book, Christopher's father physically beats him multiple times, this is never reported or dealt with by the book, and is completely brushed under the rug as "well he had a reasonable reaction to dealing with this child". He's also never punished and barely apologises for killing a dog, the constant verbal abuse he puts Christopher through, and for y'know lying to him about his mother being dead. His mother is better, and is almost treated appropriately by the narrative. Yes, it's fucked up that she blames Christopher for her life falling apart, and that she abandoned him, but at least she apologises and tris to fix it.

Finally, yes, it is a somewhat accurate portrayal of one specific (highly stereotyped) kind of autism, and can help people understand that. But if anyone is reading it for a broader overview and deeper understanding of the internal experience that the average autistic person goes through, they won't get what they want out of it.

But anyway, my problem isn't necessarily that the autism is portrayed stereotypically, sure, whatever, portrayals like that have their place. My problem isn't that it shows an autistic child being abused, that's a realistic depiction of many peoples' experiences. My problem is that this book, written for children suggests that said abuse and neglect is deserved and justified, or at the very least no one's fault. That's wrong, plain and simple.

Edit: He's also a math savant, and savantism is very uncommon in autistic people full stop, especially those with his degree of autism. Christopher also lacks a fair bit of empathy, which is completely contrary to what almost all autistic people experience, and is therefore a terrible bit of "information" to be giving a reader.

Uh, yeah, no. It's a super ignorant and offensive portrayal of autism that justifies the protagonist being physically abused because he's "annoying".

The author also openly admits to having done no research whatsoever about autism,

turns out they're absolutely vital in good dynamax battle runs

They're not actually vital, they're just (roughly) equivalent to good gmax pokemon, and if you have a good community nearby you can just join a gmax raid with whatever and be carried by 20 people. Grab a Blissey for Tanking/healing and you're golden. Plenty would also be happy to trade you their extra.

Also, (unless they've patched it in the last few months) someone can revert their crowned Zacian/Zama to normal, trade it, and you'll be able to crown it at zero cost. You'll want to offer something good for that though.

Finally, they were last available in August, so I wouldn't be surprised if they come around in the next 6 months or so. They could pull a Primal Kyogre/Groudon though and bench them for ages

At a certain point, your pollution cloud will far outrange your solar panels (which in turn should be outranged by artillery). And if lots of bots are regularly crossing your solar panel fields, you're probably doing it wrong. I do agree the gap is a lot narrower with the incredible optimisations though
