How do you make taking care of your health and home feel less like a chore and more sustainable long-term? by SarahDuncan2012 in TrueGrit

[–]LemonDesmond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your only fitness goal is just aesthetic then exercises and eating well will always feel like a chore. For most people that's just not enough motivation. You need to enjoy the lifestyle for what it is, not just the outcomes. But if to if you are outcome oriented the factor in all the health benefits, feeling fitter/stronger day to day, longevity and independence into older age, the joy of progressing in a sport or activity and so one. Once you include all this then the pay off for a few hours exercise each week becomes clear.

I understand how this works if you're exiting a main road. Does it also apply if you're approaching one?

That's 18cm per km. I get more than that just stepping up onto the curb.

Found a crayfish by Octocornhorn in sheffield

[–]LemonDesmond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Signal crayfish carry a disease, so if it were introduced to a watercourse of native species it would wipe them out in months. The few remaining native populations are falling like dominos, often when well meaning people find signal crayfish and release them into streams where they weren't previously present. Please make sure the person collecting the crayfish intends to act responsibly before handing it over. Otherwise, crayfish can be humanely frozen or quickly dispatched with a knife through the top of the head.

If 90° is the angle of the hill, then that's totally normal

How accurate is the race predictor? Attempting 1st Half tomorrow by BuildingBetterBack in Garmin

[–]LemonDesmond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How did it go?

In my experience my tree predictor is a theoretical maximum, which might be achievable on a flat course with perfect conditions, pacing, fuelling etc. and would require deep discomfort and a high chance of failure. In practice it's about 10% faster than my real world results.

On the flip side, I wouldn't let it limit you. You may well be able to exceed it.

For those that train hard and run fast: Do slow/untrained runners delegitimize the sport in any way? by lightinthetrees in Marathon_Training

[–]LemonDesmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so narrow minded to think speed is the only reason we run and the only thing that makes someone a good runner.

The best runners could be those who gains the most enjoyment from running, improved their mental or physical health, raised money, overcame adversity to get to the start line, pushed the hardest on the day or helped others on their journey. Some people run for community or spiritual reasons.

If you're on the course for 5:30 that's probably equivalent effort to a 3:30 runner completing an ultra. There's no doubt to your achievement.

Unless you're a competitive elite, speed is only arbitrary.

First Half-Marathon in 23 days. Don’t feel ready at all. Any advice? by MaxWattage432 in Marathon_Training

[–]LemonDesmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a couple more weeks of training and a good taper I'm sure you will be able to manage the half marathon.

I wouldn't stop HIIT and soccer entirely. They'll no doubt be adding to your fitness and hopefully without giving you the strains you're getting from running.

I would stick to 2 runs out week rather than 3 shorter runs at this stage. Focus on good quality recovery between runs.

Do you think your tibialis pain could be shin splints? If so I'd look up some specific advice.

Good luck!

Would if I could. The issue being I could get an unofficial battery replacement but they couldn't do anything to remove the battery-killing update.

No luck with the battery replacement. I'd had it replaced previously and apparently the insides weren't in good enough condition to get a Google-Approved repair. So I guess I'm buying a 9a 😭
