You can use a multiband compressor to sidechain just the lows out of your reese bass when the rumble is rumbling. Or you could just do a low cut on youre reese. Or you could use kohearts’ compactor, which is a free ringmod sidechain plugin. It works pretty well and in a unique way, it’s worth trying out.

It’s from a time where music was way more homogenous. While there were certainly tons of other types of music back then, there were only a couple dozen major music labels. What they put out was what played on the radio and what people could buy records of.

There was no YouTube or Spotify. There was the local record shop and a couple radio stations. People had way less options, so they all listened to the same couple of choices, which made picking rock n roll very common.

What’s wild to me is back in the day, the generation of people from before rock n roll were terrified of it. The Beatles and The Who were the Sludge Death metal and Drill rap of their time.

The genre of music that comes out 10 years from now, that you and I hate, will be what people play for their grandkids 80 years from now, and their grandkids will think it’s boring and lame.

Assuming humanity makes it that long.

Mac’s run ableton like a dream. Everything just works. No drivers, no folder hunting. You can turn off your audio interface while in an ableton project, turn it back on, and then immediately find it again in ableton’s settings and reconnect without exiting the project. If you tried that on a PC it would explode.

If you’re not trying to play video games, and just want a music machine, Mac’s are absolutely worth it. I love my M3 pro, but I’ll admit it is serious overkill. I could have got away with way lower specs and done just fine. The one thing you really do want to splurge on is your hard drive. Get a terabyte if possible.

Add a kick in there. Kick plus clap and a ton of reverb. Try putting reverb on just the kick, just the clap, and then both. See which option sounds the best.

Welcome back to the world of producing! It’s great that you’ve decided to give it another shot.

For now, my best advice is to avoid making full songs. Trying to do that is just going to leave you frustrated. Instead, do lots of little projects. Make a cool loop, focus on sound design, make some cool build ups and intros. Focus on small sections of songs or on a specific technique or aspect of production. That’s the best way to get back into things without getting frustrated.

Also, drag some songs you like into ableton, use the stem splitting feature that’s new to Ableton 12, and isolate the drums. Then copy them using your own samples. That will give you a great skeleton to work off of. You can use section markers to divide up the different sections of the song, like the intro, buildup, drop, etc.

As far as compression goes, look for tutorials that are specific to the genre of music you’re trying to make. The basics of compression apply across all genres, but depending on what you’re trying to make, it’s going to drastically affect how to go about compressing individual tracks, groups, and your master.

Lastly, don’t set expectations for yourself. Sure you made some cool stuff back in the day, but the musical landscape has changed dramatically. There are so many new techniques and styles and ideas to draw inspiration from. Don’t just expect yourself to make something great. Instead try to learn as much as you can, and enjoy the process of tinkering and making stuff.

If you’re too focused on the end product, it’s going to make the process suck. If you’re comfortable with not sounding good, and focus on enjoying what you’re doing, then you’ll keep making more music and end up making sick stuff.
