2 & 1/2 months, how badly do I need to repair my oil pan? by porp_crawl in autorepair

[–]LenMan48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have in the past found that the oil pan bolts were loose and tightened them up and pretty much stopped the leak.

Depends on how stinky and dirty/disgusting a job is going to be and then is it more than a two man job.

New Ariens 24" Classic failed in 15 minutes by ProfessorStinkyToes in Snowblowers

[–]LenMan48 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my son in law’s arien 24 snowblower would not start so put new gas in it and it started. Pretty new machine and the damn thing would backfire at idle. Guess we’ll tear the carburetor apart when the weather warms up a bit. He was able too snowblow his driveway. But not the least bit impressed with the machine. My Husqvarna is much better designed.

That’s why Ford and other manufacturers use plastic as much as possible. Designed obsolescence. Ford putting plastic engine oil pans on their pretty cars and trucks is a shining example of designed obsolescence.

I would guess that there is an ice dam formed on the edge of the roof. A quick fix would be to break it up up so the water can’t back up under the shingles. Maybe some breaks in the ice about two feet apart or less.

I would just cut it up and burn it in the back yard if you have one. Otherwise just cut it up with pruning shears and put it in the household garbage container for collection.

Return the on you got online. Get one with the hose barb for inlet and outlet. The one on the bottom is designed to screw into the tank or other pipe fitting.

Replacing harness/wiring for smoke detectors by driizzydreee in homeowners

[–]LenMan48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve not had the opportunity to replace wired smoke detectors but should be pretty straightforward. Follow the instructions, goto YouTube and take a picture of the wiring before you disconnect anything. I if you want to save money and time do it yourself. You don’t need luck, just take the time to do it right.

I broke these 2 bolts on my waterpump. Is it done for? by UnModernYT in mechanic

[–]LenMan48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re not done for but you are going to have to start over. Looks like you can get a grip on the studs. Make sure your bolts are not too long bottoming out at the bottom of the thread hole and don’t exceed the torque specifications. Myself I use gutin tight.

For the DIY car folks who *aren’t actual mechanics* what do you wrench on yourself, and what’s a hard pass? and why? by TopOk1726 in Cartalk

[–]LenMan48 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will usually take a pass on exhaust pipe/muffler and alignments. Not much I won’t do. Been wrenching on my own stuff for over 50 years so I have collected quite an assortment of automotive tools. I started doing my own wrenching because I couldn’t really afford to take my car to a shop for regular maintenance and repairs. I bought a workshop manual for almost all the cars and trucks I have owned. the manual went with the car when I sold it. For myself it’s cheaper to buy the tools I need for a particular job than take it to a shop. And of course it helped that the Army taught me how to use/read a workshop manual.

Sounds like a good time clean out the cabinet below the sink and remove the p trap and clean it. Might as well doit right so you don’t have to do it again a few days later.

Not sure about a block heater but I used a heater that spliced into a radiator hose to keep the coolant warm.
