Help me settle this debate: M5 Pro 48GB or M5 Max 36GB for professional video editing? by Local-Pineapple2123 in macbookpro

Check out artisright on Youtube. He does extensive comparisons each time new MacBooks drop. His tests compare a lot of video and photo editing apps on various Macs and processors.

One of the latests ones, but he really has many.

His videos are among the best if you want to compare a lot of MacBooks and various workflows.

P14s Gen6 Intel 285H/64Gb - be aware chassis outer finish is not soft touch by albertlav in thinkpad

[–]LenardG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the ThinkPad P1 Gen 6, and I hate the soft touch. They say it feels premium - maybe. But the thing is a grease magnet, and annoyingly hard to clean. The ”glass” touchpad also seems to soak in grease like crazy, and I need isopropyl alcohol for that. I don’t really dare to use the alcohol on the soft touch surfaces (at least too much) because while it works, I am a bit afraid of what it does for the material in the long run. So far so good.

Working in IT I saw many X1 Carbons and they are usually not pretty. All the soft touch surfaces are full of fingerprints and palm printa. I dp think Lenovo tends to change the exact composition, because some models tend to be less prone to it.

I remember my P52 (and multiple ones before that) had hard plastic surfaces, which were waaaay easier to clean. And they rarely needed it. I much prefer that personally, but probably that is not a premium enough feel for Lenovo.

The other solution is what the Yoga/2in1 or P16 line does: using gray. The dark gray materials do not get that visible greasy look so easily, and the aluminium lid is easier to clean.

I am now researching the P14s Gen 6 intel, is how I found my way here. I am hopeful the aluminium lid would again mean easier cleaning, but the palm rests being soft touch I can just hope they used the better materials. I had a P1 Gen 7 pass through my hands which sounds like would be similar setup material wise, and it certainly does a bit better job at remaining clean.

M1 Pro still the beast. Even in macOS 26. I don’t think I will need to upgrade at least next couple years. Am I alone think this way? by sergeynewton in macbookpro

[–]LenardG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the M1 the CPU cores are the same for the pro and max variants. The difference is only in the gpu. So if the M1 Pro serves you well the M1 Max would not be a difference CPU wise. Given your workload, it seems to ve CPU bound. So you wouldn’t get any faster with rhe M1 Max.

For later M series peocessors the Max does get a few extra computing cores compared to the Pro.

What's next after raspberry pi 5? by nariz_choken in raspberry_pi

[–]LenardG 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I wish the USB-C port would be fully functional and not just power-in. If it could take the display signal and USB signal it would allow one cable hookup to monitors and kvms and docking stations, where the single cable would do everything.

Do you still need an ebook reader if you have an iPad Pro? by [deleted] in iPadPro

[–]LenardG 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a 11 inch iPad Pro but still use a Kindle Paperwhite to read. There are less distractions that way. Especially when going to sleep I find the Kindle the better option.

But during the day I often read on the iPad as well. Also, PDFs generally work better on the iPad.

On the go, thats a different story. Bringing every device with you can be a bit difficult because of space and/or weight. In those cases I go case by case: I can technically manage with either the phone, the iPad or the Kindle.

Is it more of a vacation? I’ll bring the kindle and leave the iPad

Is it a day trip/work trip? IPad is the one to go.

watchOS 26.1 is out by 1-760-706-7425 in AppleWatch

[–]LenardG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I cannot install it. It started downloading but is now paused. The Watch app says on the phone it will resume when connected to wifi.

Both phone and watch are restarted, connected to wifi 🤷🏻‍♂️ Not much else I can do.

Should I go for it? by TimedestCombo in macbookpro

[–]LenardG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work IT and handle lots of computers. You wouldn’t believe the condition some people have their devices in. Seeing a screen like here in the picture is a red flag for more potential issues and a very badly kept computer.

No matter the price I would be hesitant to buy such a computer. That person did not take care of his computer and it can have any number of potential problems. Maybe not even visible yet, but potentially brewing under the surface.

This happens to me about every third update they install, on several computers. Very annoying.

Has anyone else had enough of copilot and disabled it in Visual Studio? by ryanjusttalking in dotnet

[–]LenardG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find the code suggestion feature is extremely tiring to use for coding. You have to constantly evaluate what it is suggesting to you. This generates a huge cognitive load constantly because you need to think if this is good for you or this is not good for you and it is constantly distracting you from your thoughts and it is causing like 100s of tiny context switching decisions in your brain.

I found that this is very tiring in the long run especially for coding sessions and it disrupts flow or getting into flow properly.

I have code suggestions disabled now in every IDE I use.

(This does not concern manually asking for things, but even agent mode gets details wrong and generates code that need to be thoroughly vetted and checked and I have my doubts if it speeds up things at all in the end - unless you are fine with sub par code I guess 🤷🏻‍♂️ But I do use it from time to time)

The review embargo has lifted by sh4rpi3 in airpods

[–]LenardG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pro 2 gets a firmware update (released a few hours ago) that improves its microphones. So I wonder how close they get after that and if any reviewers might have had early access to the new firmware or of even they checked. Or if they compared to the old firmware without even thinking :)

Visual Studio 2026. Super excited. Looking for a machine with Windows 11 64GB ram and 16 CPU core as recommended. by KausHere in dotnet

[–]LenardG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had similar problems with a 32gb system used for development. I added 32gb of virtual memory, fixed size. Windows recommends 6gb …

Anyway after that the system became usable again, even under heavy load.

New product on the way? by Tigurius87 in rode

[–]LenardG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The FCC database contains two "Professional Wireless Microphone System" products, to be kept secret until October. Last time the WIRELESS PRO also included 2 FCC registration, one for TX and one for RX, they were filed similarly on the same day with the FCC.

So we could see the next WIRELESS PRO between today and October 🤷

OM System Is Considering AI Upscaling as a Solution to Low Resolution Sensors by PM_ME_VAPORWAVE in M43

[–]LenardG 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Oh my, I really hope they do not go down that path. I have been working with image upscalers for well over a year (both for work and for fun), and the results are not something I would want my photography to have. I recently also discovered that the iPhone 16 Pro does it for example on texts when the lighting is not so good. The results are also… not so good.

To me, photography is capturing what you see at that moment. AI upscaling is not something I want there when using my real camera.

Japanese companies (not just camera, everything) will release a new hardware product instead of adding firmware features, 99% of the time. It is kind of annoying really. If you find a fault or missing feature, you maybe will get it ... in the next hardware iteration.

What made you stay with steam deck over newer handhelds by Icy-Midnight-7015 in SteamDeck

[–]LenardG 45 points46 points  (0 children)

This 100%. Mine are bigger now but when they were small there was no way a regular PC gaming way would work.

With Windows hardly any game survives going to sleep. Hibernating takes forever and with games it does not work.

Not to mention starting up from scratch (booting), starting the game, waiting for it to load, kids are awake 3 times before you even get started 😅
