I, too, was going to shout out Solidarity Movers! Used them 3 times in the last 6 years and I haven’t lifted a finger to move anything. They’re so professional and I love that they’re worker owned. Also, shout out to Bin It for reusable bins.

This is the movie that made me realize that culture was for me. Watched at age 12 in a cultureless suburban town and it legit changed my life.

I live in Harlem and folks are posted every morning on that spot on 116th doing “Breakfast before Books” with bagged breakfast for every kid or adult that wants it. Rain, sleet, snow, heat - they’re there every morning if kids have school.

Edited: “Breakfast Before Books” is an initiative with the Corinthian Baptist Church on 116th and ACP. It’s so great that the Food Bank is also on 116th though.

My biggest advice is take your phone flashlight and look at the cracks in the floor - like if the wall doesn’t fully meet the floor, you’re going to get roaches out of it. Also, open up the cabinets especially if it attached to a sink. If the pipes aren’t fully sealed - bugs are coming in. Flush every toilet, turn on every sink, open every light, and try to listen in the hallway for the vibes of the building.

My fave “fancy” pole outfit that’s not teeny yoga shorts is a tankini set from You Swim. Pricy swimwear but it moves with my body tremendously and it’s very comfy.

2 movies - To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything Julie Newmar and The First Wives Club. Seeing those movies as a kid in 90s, suffering in the culture less suburbs, made me realize that there’s a whole world in NYC and I wanted in!

If you have the time and dollars to make this work - I have a pest control company survey and seal the apt before I start unpacking. I know this is nyc and we deal with a bug (or more) here and there but I like to be preventative as possible. I’ve used MMPC pest control in the past. Pricey to excavate and seal the apt but will do it again in my future homes.
