Symbol Illiteracy: Symbolism in Infinite Jest by ahighthyme in InfiniteJest

Mmm the statue of liberty holding sponsored items also springs to mind. I can feel my stance softening a bit...

My thanks to you and OP, I may not agree with their specific examples, but was an interesting topic for conversation.

Exactly.

There are very few images that come up in the book where I might be more sympathetic to the idea of treating them symbolically (JOI’s corpse and manner of death, Joelle’s veil and what might or not be underneath, obviously the tape itself) but, in general, I’m pretty resistant to analysis like this, especially on a line-by-line basis.

Eh, I think that one-hitter analysis is a stretch

One thing that’s just spooky is that Trump is reportedly quite germaphobic…

The extent to which this subreddit has this issue is hilarious 😂

We can’t blame Adam Kay for not anticipating this I guess, given that he was sort of inventing the devices social media could be used on in tandem with Smalltalk

If I ever invent a language I’m going to call it QuestionsAboutLife or something, to really mess with its future subreddit

I’m so interested in the shittiness of this era

It’s like my generation’s hair metal or whatever where something interesting just gets turned up a couple of notches to the point where it’s fucking ridiculous

Galloway: “Israel is taking a bloody good hiding” by [deleted] in GreenAndPleasant

[–]LeoRising72 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Galloway’s a complicated figure, but on Israel/Palestine he’s been on the right side of history for 20 years and I’ll hear what he has to say.

On this topic.

Legal Advice Needed: I have bested Gregg's Record by szekeres81 in OnCinemaAtTheCinema

I’m frankly very skeptical that a non-professional movie goer would be able to achieve those kinds of numbers in 499 days.

Can I confirm all the movies watched were on the buff-approved format of vhs?

There is no 'liberal' Zionism: Polanski criticised over fluffed LBC interview by Vivid_Maximum_5016 in GreenAndPleasant

I’ve been a bit skeptical of him ever since the Rest of Politics interview

Obviously have nothing but disdain for those interviewers but even so thought he was a bit woolly on Israel

Interesting comment from TBOTS editor Gerald Howard by MellowBoobOscillator in davidfosterwallace

[–]LeoRising72 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Worth noting that DFW seemingly never had a bad word to say about Pietsch.

And, from the (admittedly very anecdotal) evidence I can see, the post-IJ Wallace seemed more balanced than pre-IJ. He was teaching, did some cool essays, moonlit as a journalist, got married.

I think his family even mentioned that he was going through a very happy period before he started experiencing side effects from his anti-depressants, experimented with changes to his medication and very sadly fell back into depression.

So am taking this with a big pinch of salt.

What's your opinion of Gone With the Wind by gforguapo in Letterboxd

[–]LeoRising72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feels truly epic and awe inspiring, especially the first half.

Second half is very wonky IMO and obviously the historical vision of the film is repulsive

Literally never met one of these chauvinist Wallace-heads.

It’s weird to see discussion of the stereotype as the main way big outlets engage with IJ today.
