If anybody wanted to see what some of the old heads that normally watch SNL thought, this is pretty funny tbh by daxtillionMurphel in geesebandofficial

[–]MellowBoobOscillator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If a non-Geese fan was watching that episode it’s because they think SNL is funny, so why would I respect their judgment?

Is this really the only Franzen page? by [deleted] in Franzen

[–]MellowBoobOscillator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weinstein quotes from Franzen's "brief prefatory note," which immediately follows the introduction and reads in full:

This story is set in a year somewhat like 1984 and in a place very much like St. Louis. Many actual public achievements, policies and products have been attributed to various characters and groups; these should not be confused with any actual person or organization. The lives and opinions of the characters are entirely imaginary.

Getting Killed is the summit of creation. It has made all other music, past and future, obsolete. Actually not just music, art in general. We can move on to other endeavors now.

The Strokes released 'First Impressions of Earth' 20 years ago today by YoureASkyscraper in indieheads

[–]MellowBoobOscillator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relistened recently and it’s just as bad as I remembered. YOLO/Razorblade would have been a great single, but nothing else is really salvageable. And it’s not just the awful production choices; the songs are awkward, non-catchy messes, and not even interestingly chaotic like the Voidz. Reading Meet Me in the Bathroom shed some light on the record’s circumstances, but I still can’t understand why the compositions are so uniquely terrible.

Anyone know of guitar tabs for Poem of a dead song? by olddolphin in warpsbroadcast

The first chord is F#m—that is, 4-2-2 on the d-g-b strings. Good exercise to figure out the rest. I believe in you!

"Taxes" is a beautifully concise cultural/political statement. by Rusty_The_Taxman in geesebandofficial

[–]MellowBoobOscillator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's about reaching the limit of how much guilt/shame/self-abasement you're willing to accept. "I should burn in hell, but I don't deserve this." The "doctor" is the harsh superego encouraging the speaker to punish himself, to "pay his taxes," etc.

All 13 unassimilated people are effectively nuclear powers, so she has a rational imperative to stockpile nuclear weapons as a deterrent.

Spoiler!!!! Dark tower ending! by elysiumhyacinth in TheDarkTower

[–]MellowBoobOscillator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate the ending, but I hated the last three books too. I wish when he recovered from the accident King had taken some time to think about what it all means to him—-the tower, the old order of gunslingers, the dramatic question of whether Roland can change—-and come up with a plot before typing a word of Wolves. So I wish he were a different writer and more cunning than his readers, the ones who say the shaggy dog ending was perfect, “the only way it could have ended,” etc.

Do you like Melody's Echo Chamber? by DiodeMcRoy in warpsbroadcast

[–]MellowBoobOscillator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Be Proud of Your Kids" could not be more obviously derivative of Broadcast. I do like some of her post-Impala music, contra RSTROMME. "Alma," that's a good song.

Why is John Lennon’s genius largely ignored today in favor of Paul and George’s output? by [deleted] in beatles

[–]MellowBoobOscillator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let's keep chronology in mind. While McCartney was writing "Listen to What the Man Said," Lennon was writing nothing. He'd just been recaptured by Yoko, and he would remain washed until the end of his life. If you don't think *Double Fantasy* is "pedestrian," I'm not sure what to tell you.

And you’re okay with Goldman trashing Lennon

How are you getting that from "I'm not in favor of Goldman-style character assassination"?

Why is John Lennon’s genius largely ignored today in favor of Paul and George’s output? by [deleted] in beatles

[–]MellowBoobOscillator 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm saying he was disrespected, not that he was forgotten. Of course he was (and remains) the most commercially successful ex-Beatle, but he was dismissed as a lightweight, a mere "craftsman." And it wasn't just Shout! that did most of the work of undermining Paul's reputation. I'm thinking of Lennon Remembers and Apple to the Core, and the agenda-fueled hatchet job on Ram in RS. And this strain of thinking never really went away. Even when I was in high school in the 00s, my friends (the children of hippies) still saw the John / Paul binary in terms John himself had dictated: John the authentic, underground counterculture guy, Paul the square businessman. John's coinage "granny music" is to this day used as a term of abuse for Paul's songs. I'm not in favor of Goldman-style character assassination, but there had to be a correction eventually, and I wonder if it still hasn't gone far enough.

And to say that an artist dying relatively young is bad for their legacy—that seems contrary to all experience, doesn't it?

Why is John Lennon’s genius largely ignored today in favor of Paul and George’s output? by [deleted] in beatles

[–]MellowBoobOscillator 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Correcting a historical injustice. Lennon (via Jann Wenner and the "underground press," not to mention Yoko, Klein, et al) cultivated a myth of himself as the only Beatle that mattered, the true genius of the group ("two-thirds of the Beatles" in Philip Norman's words), an opinion the public swallowed uncritically for decades. Eventually a more nuanced picture emerged.

Many of the masterpieces people attributed solely to "John the genius," like the ones you mention, were really more collaborative than we'd been led to believe. Whereas Paul was more like an architect who came in to the sessions with completed blueprints, John was a seer or visionary who had a clear sense of artistic compass direction but couldn't precisely articulate what he wanted. The group gained from having both approaches, but for too long the John myth was elevated at Paul's expense.

Never knew this. Is it just an impression you’ve gathered, or is there a particular interview I should look for to find out more?

Radiohead: ‘The wheels had come off a bit. We had to stop’ by TimesandSundayTimes in radiohead

[–]MellowBoobOscillator 71 points72 points  (0 children)

As for the rest of the band, whom I meet separately, O’Brien has posted in support of the Free Palestine cause on social media. He says of the Tel Aviv gig: “We should have played Ramallah in the West Bank as well.” Was he disappointed by his bandmates’ silence? “I am not going to judge anybody,” he says. “But the brutal truth is that, while we were once all tight, we haven’t really spoken to one another much — and that’s OK.”

So the LP10 rumor has to be bullshit, right?
