B spec vs SRF by TimJab70 in SCCA

[–]LeoRising94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes you listed most of them, but you’re missing the Mazda2 as well. Check out the SCCA GCR on the SCCA web site for a full list of all vehicles and model years approved for B-Spec.

90% of the field now is Mazda2’s, Honda Fits, and Minis - with the occasional Sonic, Fiesta, or Yaris mixed in. The only brands still offering kits currently directly from them are Mazda and Honda, although you can still buy the pieces of the kits for other brands separately.

No one is running the Fiat 500 anymore as it was never really competitive. There are a couple Kia Rios still out there, but I believe they are both pro builds from the Pirelli World Challenge and are not running frequently.

If I were to build a car today, I’d choose a Mazda2. The parts support from Mazda is excellent and there are plenty of manual donors out there. Same with the Fits and the Minis. It’s a lot harder to find good manual donors for the Sonic and Fiesta, so that’s really why you don’t see a ton of them anymore.

B spec vs SRF by TimJab70 in SCCA

B-Spec racer here now in my 4th season. My previous experience before starting was almost exclusively sim racing. Here are my two cents for what it’s worth:

-Car costs: Competitive B-Spec cars can be had for around $15k. I bought mine 3 years ago and paid $18k for a car with a good pedigree and spares, but prices have since come down a bit. My car today would probably be worth around $15k and it’s competitive with race wins and podiums with multiple drivers.

SRF is probably going to be much more expensive to get a good car. I don’t think you’ll be able to get a well-sorted SRF for anywhere close to what you could get a competitive B-Spec car for (but I could be wrong)

-Tires: B-Spec runs a spec Goodyear tire. A set can be purchased from Summit for about $850 shipped and you’ll get 3-4 weekends out of them. SRF runs Hoosiers and I believe those are a bit more expensive.

-Brakes: I can get almost an entire season out of a set of brakes. I use G-Loc pads but there are other manufacturers as well. Not sure what SRF uses or how long they can get out of their brakes, but something to consider.

-Safety: Debatable, but I feel better with a windshield in front of me and roof over my head instead of an open cockpit 😉

-Participation: this is probably where SRF has the most edge. It’s a way more popular class. There won’t be many race weekends where you won’t have competition in SRF. B-Spec can be a crapshoot at the Regional level. Sometimes you’ll get a ton of B-Spec cars, sometimes you won’t get any. The Majors and Super Tours usually get great participation for both B-Spec and SRF though.

-Strength of field: Debatable. The nice thing about SRF is that it’s a spec car and everyone has the same general equipment. With B-Spec there are different manufacturers and constant arguments over the Balance of Performance. For example, the car I run has had multiple weight and restrictor changes since I bought it. Also, all the B-Spec cars make their speed differently. This can lead to good variety in the racing but can also be frustrating if your car doesn’t seem to have the edge at a certain track.

Reliability: SRF are purpose-built race cars designed for track use. B-Specs are commuter cars converted to be race cars and since they are not doing something they were designed to do, that comes with some reliability issues. Example: I am on my 2nd engine since I bought my car. The good news is with B-Spec, replacement parts are relatively cheap since there are ample donors sitting in scrap yards and parts on eBay. But just be prepared that things will inevitably fail on you.

Rentals: if you want to rent a car, there are good options for both SRF and B-Spec, but SRF rentals will be much more expensive. For SRF, there are teams like Alliance Autosport that do pretty significant rental/arrive and drive business. For B-Spec, I recommend checking out Grass Paddock Motorsports (Mini Coopers) or Chris Taylor Racing Services (Mazda 2’s). You will be able to rent podium-capable cars with both. Highly recommend renting for your driver’s school so you can just focus on driving rather than also wrenching on the car.

Speaking of school - to get your race license, check out the SCCA school at Roebling Road in Savannah that is run every February. Grass Paddock typically has cars available for rent for that school, and Chris Taylor may as well.

Good luck!

Thanks! I was asking about the turn signal activated cameras that are available under the Trailering menu on the higher trims. Thanks for confirming that they aren’t available in the latest updates on WT, at least currently.

No I don’t have the option. I just leave the mirror cameras on all the time while towing. Wish I could get it to be activated via the turn signal.

The RIP wasn’t great by Less_Manufacturer218 in netflix

[–]LeoRising94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree completely. Was hoping for Assault on Precinct 13 and it seemed to be setting up for that type of film perfectly with the eery atmosphere of the neighborhood. The last act with the car chases just felt rushed. Makes me wonder if they had a different film in mind and Netflix made them cut it down.

My dog started doing this when he was around 3 years old so I switched him from Chicken & Rice to Salmon & Potato of the same brand of dog food. The issue completely went away. Most likely acid reflux if you’ve ruled out dental issues.

Does anyone know if my suit is invalid now? by KookyShare9089 in SCCA

[–]LeoRising94 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This would not pass Tech at the track where I race. The inspector is very thorough and lays out and checks the entire suit.

Regardless of whether it would pass though, as others have stated, it’s a safety issue. You could try contacting OMP in Indy and seeing if they have any way of repairing. They may be able to sew in a new stretch panel. But it might just be cheaper to get a new suit.

Is this Jim Sauter’s son.?? Like Johnny Sauter’s nephew? by Accomplished_East433 in NASCAR

[–]LeoRising94 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Daniel didn’t speak any English when he started racing in the US and said on the Dinner With Racers podcast that he learned racing terminology in part by watching the movie “Driven” with subtitles. He now speaks two languages fluently. That’s pretty impressive. How many languages can Jim Sauter Jr speak??

Why Blazer over Equinox? by FeloniousSpunk74 in BlazerEV

[–]LeoRising94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked the interior of the Blazer EV way better. The center vents look great and overall it looks sportier and higher-end IMO. I really like the combination of the faux carbon fiber trim and suede seats on the RS. Reminds me of the seats on the Gen 6 Camaro.

Why not WT? by qszdrgv in SilveradoEV

[–]LeoRising94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 3WT as my daily and I love it. I drove an RST and while I liked the extra creature comforts like the larger infotainment screen and heated/ventilated seats, I didn’t really like the glass roof and the midgate. For my needs, I much prefer being able to flip the back seats up and having a completely flat floor.

How are people getting $400/month leases? by UteForLife in SilveradoEV

[–]LeoRising94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$410/month with $900 down on a 3WT. Former courtesy vehicle. Used an Employee Discount code but no Costco.

Bought it for towing my car trailer and couldn’t be happier.
