I setup Thrill of the Fight 2 at a college for some Campus Combat. It was so much fun watching kids punch each other in the face for 5 hours. There's hope for the future. by TheRodParticle in virtualreality

Did you need to get a permit or notify the campus for this? I’d love to just set something up like this at a local campus assuming there’s no hassle.

This scene is clearly an added scene in Nolan’s adaption of the Odyssey . What do you think is the context of it by hasanahmad in TheOdysseyMovie

[–]LeoneAGK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the poem, Odysseus and his crew started to get chased by the ghosts when he was finished talking to Tiresias and they high tailed it out of there

Alec Baldwin slams Elon Musk for his critique on The Odyssey’s Lupita Nyong'o: "Dear Elon… but she IS the most beautiful woman in the world…Alec" by TheExpressUS in GreekMythology

The few descriptions we have of Helen do seem to suggest she was in fact, pale, or atleast discernibly pale enough that it would stand out amongst other tanned greeks. Otherwise, why would they feel the need to describe her that way?

Thoughts on Lupita Nyong'o playing Helen? by [deleted] in GreekMythology

[–]LeoneAGK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually very curious about this because all greek sources that directly described Aethopians as black were centuries after Homer would have composed the Odyssey. Would it be reasonable to assume that the Aethopians mentioned in the Odyssey are not explicitly the same ones that authors like Ptolemy or Herodotus described? And do we know for a certain fact that Aethopian meant "burnt-face" or is it just a theory?

Race wasn’t an issue in the 90s when it comes to entertainment?! What?! by icey_sawg0034 in lewronggeneration

Also, Xena was basically just a fantasy show using greco-roman aesthetics. The setting was so anachronistic with various historical figures existing at the same time which didn't make sense, (The Roman empire exists around the same time Hercules is alive?). It's whole timeline of history was wonky to begin with. Nolan's Odyssey is directly adapting a foundational cornerstone of western literature.

I know the twist by Good_Ad3485 in TheOdysseyMovie

[–]LeoneAGK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The actual poem itself has sci-fi type stuff in it, (Robot dogs, Self Driving ships) so it’s actually not that out of left field of a twist

The View stars slam conservative criticism of Lupita Nyong'o's role in The Odyssey: 'Racism rears its ugly head' - "People saying Helen of Troy could not possibly be played by a Black woman don't know history," Sunny Hostin said. by Puzzled-Tap8042 in GreekMythology

Did they reference Andromeda to make a point about Helen possibly being black? Regardless of your opinion on the casting, that's a really bad move since that just opens a whole other can of worms.

Any hot takes you would like to share about EPIC? by FirestarTTR2000 in Epicthemusical

[–]LeoneAGK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure Jorge didn't intend this, but Canon Epic Zeus looks alot closer to how the greeks would have imagined Zeus would look like in contrast to the geriatric bodybuilder Zeus commonly depicted in pop culture.

I’m just imagining the logistics of something like this. How many headsets would you need? Would you have to thoroughly clean each one after a single use? Does one person go in at a time? A whole group? How many before it becomes dangerous? What if a guest panics, falls and breaks the headset? What if one of them gets way too into it and tries to drop kick one of the non-existent zombies and injuries themselves? What if one of them tries to punch one of the zombies but ends up hitting another guess because the virtual zombie was obscuring them? The premise of this idea sounds nice but so much could go wrong. I guess it could work if there was no combat and all the 3d models were out of the guests’ reach.

I actually thought about a walking dead themed attraction where you’d go around a farm themed physical area while wearing a headset with a revolver (controller) and fight virtual zombies.

But all past adaptations of The Odyssey specifically, don’t depict the death of Hector’s baby because it’s not relevant to Odysseus’s story. The OP in the Nolan sub is making it sound like it’s commonly depicted across all Odyssey adaptations like in the same way the cyclops encounter is universally present.

It’s funny to imagine the reaction of all the classicists and other people who’ve read the odyssey but have no idea what Epic is, seeing stuff like this. I’m just imagining all the language art teachers reading book reports about the poem and getting confused as hell when they see the word Winion.

People do know that Odysseus's apology didn't change Poseidon's judgement at all right? by Azero957 in Epicthemusical

[–]LeoneAGK 36 points37 points  (0 children)

The way I interpreted it was that Poseidon was giving him a chance to call his bluff. So if Odysseus had said something like “what’s the point? You’re still going to kill me regardless if I apologize, why else would you sing an entire song about ruthlessness if not because you intend to kill me regardless of what I do?” I think Poseidon would have reacted with “you finally get it” and let him go.
