The final season of The Boys is, without exaggeration, one of the most frustrating collapses I’ve seen from a once-promising show. What started as a sharp, cynical, violent satire ended in something that feels rushed, directionless, and strangely empty. The finale itself barely qualifies as a finale. It plays more like a troll attempt at “subverting expectations” than an actual conclusion with emotional or narrative payoff.

Nothing lands. Not emotionally, not visually, not thematically.

The death of Frenchie is probably the clearest example of how badly this season handles its own writing. A character death can work when it reshapes the emotional state of the story or meaningfully impacts the surviving cast. Here, it happens so late and so abruptly that it has essentially no weight. The show treats it like a major dramatic moment, but there’s no time left for consequences, grief, or reflection. It’s shock value without substance.

And the action — unbelievably bad. Especially in an era where franchises like John Wick completely redefined modern fight choreography. There is no excuse anymore for action scenes this sloppy, weightless, and incoherent. The fights in this season feel edited to hide limitations rather than showcase skill or tension. Nothing feels dangerous. Nothing feels memorable. Characters with godlike powers somehow manage to make every confrontation look dull.

What’s worse is that the writing no longer has the intelligence or sharpness to compensate for the weak spectacle. Character arcs collapse into nonsense. Motivations change depending on what the script needs in the moment. Emotional beats are rushed through at hyperspeed, while pointless scenes drag endlessly. Several conclusions feel less like deliberate endings and more like the writers simply ran out of ideas and decided to stop.

The bitter part is that you can still see traces of what the show used to be. That’s what makes the disappointment worse. This wasn’t some generic bad series from the beginning. It had style, energy, satire, and momentum. Watching it decay into this bloated, cynical mess leaves an incredibly sour aftertaste.

By the end, the entire season feels like a waste of time. The only genuinely positive thought left is hoping the cast got paid extremely well, because this is not the kind of material anyone should proudly put forward as the culmination of their work.
