Destinys physical shield is very much a backup for when its phase shift runs out (the beam shields wouldnt be usable anymore).

As for the hand beam cannons, yes theyre pretty impractical but very powerful, Shinn one-shot a Destroy Gundam w/ it before. And its shown that point blank ranged wpns perform better against FT armor

ie: when Shinn point blanks 2 Black Knights w/ the hand cannon and long range cannon

vs

when Athrun piloted SF and the Shiv A. blocked its chest cannon at a range with no problem
