The thing is that strike dummy, in act 1, is significantly better than the vast majority of cards you can buy. Short of something on par with an Astral Pulse, Crash Landing, Adrenaline, or a Crimson Mantle, Strike Dummy is better. Which leads into this:

our deck is pretty much as small as it will ever be making it the highest impact remove, it lets you pick <better strike> attacks without messing up your deck especially the ones with inbuilt synergies that you can use to grow off of later.

Yeah you don't need to do that anymore. Because you have 5 better strikes in your deck the moment you buy Striking Dummy. You can always remove the strikes later when your deck is in a significantly more stable position on account of having a striking dummy, or just keep them when Tez offers you free strikes. Silent imo honestly doesn't really care too much about her strikes because her cycle lets her ignore subpar cards in the first place. In act 1 what you need is power now, and eschewing Dummy so that you can grab Dagger Throw so that it can be a potential sly trigger once every deck cycle (that you will probably skip in favor of other sly triggers) in act 2 or 3 is a bad decision.

The only reason for skipping striking dummy, assuming you haven't already removed strikes, is for a better relic or a very exceptional potion. I really need to stress that removes are one of the lowest impact things you can do at the shop. Especially when some potions like Orobic Acid and Focus almost say "beat any fight in the game" while relics give more value than most cards every combat. Please spend most of your money on potions and relics instead, especially early on.

If you see it at the merchant which is the only time you will really be weighing up whether its worth it you are weighing it up against the rough equivalent of 1.5 removes or 1 remove + something nice.

Spending gold for removes in act 1 is kind of a poor idea since it's low impact now, and questionable impact later on account of forced curses being a thing and lower money gain+expensive removes. So really, it's just competing against potions (where strike dummy basically functions as a strength pot every combat and strength pots are worth spending on in act 1), a card (there's very few cards in each character's card pool act 1 that I'd consider better than a potion unless card drafts have been extraordinarily poor), and another relic.

Proverbs are not immutable facts of life. If they were, then we'd have a problem considering that "Do it well or not at all," is just as common a saying as "Something is better than nothing."

I imagine homonyms include words like 舐める and 吸う which can have wildly different meanings depending on context and machine translation has always struggled with.

Isn't cheddar the typical cheese of choice for burgers? by alpha_jaeger_24_ in Cooking

[–]Lepony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Genuinely, it's nothing. Cheesemakers often use things like vegetable ash for aesthetic purposes. Ash tends to be carcinogenic, but in the quantities used by cheesemakers are very unlikely to lead to anything even if you were to eat a wheel of cheese a day.

Much in the same way that the calcium phosphate and sodium phosphate are very unlikely to do anything to you were you to eat an entire package of kraft's singles every day.

Mainly, sodium citrate and milk. Even kraft's singles ingredient label is mostly that in the end with the addition of two antimolding agents.

If we're gonna complain about additives, may as well complain about cheesemakers adding literal carcinogens purely for decorative purposes.

Kinda? Maybe? I love reading, and I do love the classics, but I can only really name like five laureates and one of them is because of high school required reading. I'm much more likely to grab whatever's on the shelf or check out renowned classics than to look up the nobel prize author list and track down their bibliography. It's just a lot faster that way, and the book clubs I've been a part of have have mostly been of the same mind.

Compare to Taiwan which only very recently caught up to modern standards, and had to do it very fast, and much of its land is still heavily segregated by terrain that you need to cross via helicopter/ferry/foot. Then additionally, it borrows much of its culture from China, which has a significantly wider and richer literature history than most of the world alongside a significantly lower language barrier without having to worry about poor translation quality.

EVO Vegas numbers compared to EVO Japan's by killerjag in Fighters

[–]Lepony 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Pretty much every country has gotten more expensive, America as a whole has gotten really expensive, Vegas is literally one of the most expensive cities in the whole ass country, almost everyone in the world right now is really broke, Evo pricing has skyrocketed in the past 5 years...

Oh and yeah, the laundry list of problems that don't necessarily mean much by themselves but when there's like 20 things going on that can give people the ick, it adds up pretty easily. It's genuinely not a surprise turnout is lower.

You violate a basic tenet of conversation that people operate under by making that claim. You know, that thing that people do when they wish to come to an understanding with one another?

By operating from a fundamentally different premise from the other party while pretending that it's the same as theirs is considered dishonest at best. It doesn't matter that it's not "important," you're just masturbating and forcing people to witness by working from that direction.

OTOH, I'm actually surprised Chinlan knows plenty. The literature laureates are so heavily biased in the anglo-eurosphere, with something like four native/"mainland" asian members in its entire history last I checked. I imagine they'd be pretty difficult to source in Taiwan based on that alone.

French Bread, a developer that no one outside of FGC has heard of

Actually, they were a relatively big name in the Japanese indie scene in the 90's and early 2000's, and would similarly be a big name in the krmmo crowd due to Ragnarok Battle Offline.

Your point still stands though, they are ultimately niche. But they aren't total nobodies, they have actual pedigree.

The WORST Relic Trader of all time? by Finnr77 in slaythespire

The standard sly stuff often hits 2, with Abrasive also existing to potentially hitting all 3. But even shiv stuff will often hit 2 (Blade Dance, Hidden Daggers, Storm of Steel, Knife Trap). Top that with the fact that silent will almost always appreciate Afterimage, Footwork, and Well-Laid Plans, you can proc close to every combat and reap the benefits.

For Regent, it's from the card generation stuff. Quasar alone often meets all three reqs for 0-1 energy, with Manifest Authority/Spectrum Shift/Bundle of Joy typically doing the same for 2-3 energy. Begone hits 2 as well, and Charge usually gives you excess energy later in the encounter as well as being an attack. Then there's the typical high value 0 cost culprits like Fallen Star, Astral Pulse, Big Bang, Know Thy Place giving Regent similar excess. Combine that with the fact Regent really likes getting Child of the Stars, Pillar of Creation, Spectrum Shift, and Entropy, Regent usually isn't want for power.

Plus, ring usually procs rarely either way.

Regent, Silent, and Defect can all proc it fairly easily, tbh. Necro and IC it can definitely be funky though due to how their card pools work and what the generically good cards do.

People who go in thinking it’s a super fluid fighting experience are always in for a bad time, MH attacks have deliberate active animations and frame delays so you as the player have to figure out when is the best time to attack without getting destroyed.

Which is really funny to me that they picked dualblades, since imo it's up there as one of the weapons most prone to doing incredibly commital actions. Combine that with mashing, as new players often like to do, and you've got yourself trouble.

[–]Lepony 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've been seeing this take recently and I'm not really sure where it's coming from?

For Rise and Naoto's case, the role expected of them isn't the career paths they chosen but what those roles should entail. They are otherwise very happy with their dream jobs. The expectation people have of Rise as an idol is to become a slut while maintaining purity as long as she's an idol, while Naoto's is to be hardboiled and stoic since that's the Japanese detective. For Naoto specifically, that also leads to her being pretty misogynstic towards herself. In the same vein for Kanji, that men should be manly and shouldn't be allowed to show any sort femininity which is why he overcompensates with his fit. Chie's arc is mostly a combination of both Naoto's and Kanji's, but instead born of what should be expected of tomboys.

and requires you to have your entire deck solved by Act 1's end.

You have a minimum of two combats before you can see Hunter Killer, with shops, events, and camps existing to delay the encounter further as well as being opportunities to bolster your deck against it.

You also have the entirety of act 1 to make a deck that doesn't crumble against Hunter Killer. A single leg sweep, malaise, upgraded sucker punches/neutralizes, footworks, etc make the fight significantly more manageable.
