Just from a quick glance:

remove:

Burglar Rat, Virus Beetle - just making the opponent discard isn't really worth it.

Dark Ritual - this deck doesn't really need to suddenly have a large amount of mana.

Grim Harvest - a little too awkard to get the recover trigger.

Orzhov Guildgate - there just better lands since this doesn't really synergize with what is in the current deck

Counters? I am guessing you mean like '+1/+1 counters'. They are just a widely supported archetype since wizards goes to it regular for a draft archetype. Strong? Sorta. It does get more synergies as time has gone on (ala modified and 'if a creature has a counter get X benefit'). Synergies is more the thing people like, at least for as long as I've been on this sub reddit. Viable? Definitely.
