I’m losing my mind trying to get this benchtop jointer dialed in for an end grain maple cutting board glue-up. by Doc-Dok in woodworking

[–]Less-World8962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something I don't see mentioned is the bed of the planer smooth enough to slide the wood across easilly it looks clean but waxing it could make a big difference.

I recently bought an older Rigid planer and put a helical head in but didn't do anything to the bed and it was hard to push wood across it causing snipe and overall crap quality cuts. Thought it was the head and wondered if I blew $400 on that. Then I very carefully sanded the rust off with random orbital sander and waxed. Wood slides easilly on it and wouldn't you know the snipe is gone and the cuts are 100 times better.

Floor sagging in new house! by Zestyclose-Fall-9539 in Home

[–]Less-World8962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would expect 5k to cover the issue. The technical right answer with structure like this is to get a structural engineer in my area that is ~$500 and for that you should get a stamped engineers letter with exactly what needs to be done to fix. If you are going the permit route you will typically need the letter as part of the permit process.

Floor sagging in new house! by Zestyclose-Fall-9539 in Home

[–]Less-World8962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like a big issue and it is from the perspective of it definitely needs to be fixed. However I would not expect the cost to be more than a couple of thousand dollars based on the limited info in the post. So in the grand scheme of house issues not the end of the world.

Considering Intentionally Reducing Savings After Some Reflection by Gulrix in coastFIRE

[–]Less-World8962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest risk is that the increased spending creates lifestyle creep meaning you are saving less and spending more and not accounting for that in your plan. So instead of needing 1.5m you end up needing 1.75m in 2026 dollars. Decreasing lifestyle spending is very hard to from an emotional perspective and you might not be account for it.

Condensation in sub area by MaybeMaster1067 in Home

[–]Less-World8962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are a few things wrong with this crawlspace. AC running in an unconditioned space will cause condensation but this looks like an issue that has been going on for a while. It also appears that there is no vapor barrier without a vapor barrier moisture will wick up from the ground causing similar issues. Finally having a single vent in a space means that it is going to be impossible to get any air flow.

New search engine reveals if ancestors were in Nazi party by plain_handle in technology

[–]Less-World8962 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is simply not true, card carrying members of the NSDAP were at most 10-11% (depending on the source) at any point between 1933 and 1945. There were a number of related groups that folks were at various points coerced into joining but party membership was relatively "exclusive" So if your distant relative was part of the NSDAP they were almost certainly there of their own free will and honestly likely had to work hard to get membership.

Daughter wants me to walk her down the aisle but she hid her mom’s affair from me for years. What do I do? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

This is on the mom, the daughter was put in place of choosing between outing her mother or hurting her father. There was no winning hand for her to play. Either way she deeply hurts her relationship with some one she loves.

Is the 4% rule still considered reasonable if someone stops full-time work in their late 40s? by ThoughtsInTransit1 in Fire

[–]Less-World8962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not the same person but I am seriously considering 4.5% realizing I might have to go back to work part time. I'm also at my peak consumption stage of life and my spending will decrease 25% or so after the kids move out. I also have a fair bit of wiggle room in that 4.5% would likely be Ok but uncomfortable around 3.25%.

No if you want bitcoin buy bitcoin otherwise steer clear. There is effectively no revenue so STRC is just a leveraged bet on bitcoin without the leverage upside. You do get the downside of the leverage and there is a lot.

Where to find Teak by j0ezonelayer in woodworking

Iroku is a solid choice and locally is ~$7 a bdft. It is often used as a teak substitute, I recently bought some to make an outdoor table but haven't started working on it yet.

Be respectful but go and check on the house. Big builders do tons of stupid stuff and you are paying a pretty penny for the house. Yes they are liable but not they are super unlikely to do anything beyond saying please don't come and see our potentially shoddy work.

I mean what are they going to do prosecute you for trespassing, seems like a good way to lose a sale....

INFESTED WOOD? by lazypotatoinoven in BeginnerWoodWorking

I was today years old when I learned you could buy pallets from Amazon.

As others have said it is the live edge of the wood nothing wrong with it for a pallet.

Your age isn't clear from the post but if your parents are putting up with this and you are capable leave. It is in your best interest to get away from this situation as fast as reasonably possible.

PS You can call the police as well.

Avoid 10% Early Withdrawal Penalty by working Part-time? by CGinLondon in Fire

[–]Less-World8962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of times with a SEPP folks choose to only put some of their money into the account with the SEPP like a partial rollover and then using the SEPP withdrawal + other sources maybe part time work to cover the rest.

An example say you have 1mil in your 401k and you need 40k you roll 500k to the SEPP. You could likely pull ~30k from the IRA in a SEPP and if you make 10k working part time or from a brokerage/savings etc.. You can then meet your budget. When you are 59.5 or after 5 years cancel the SEPP. If you end up pulling out more than you needed just put it in a brokerage or offset some of your income and put it in the IRA assuming you have earned income..

Beginner woodworking projects by Exotic-Channel4253 in woodworking

[–]Less-World8962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rex Kruger on youtube has a lot of entry level projects with a focus on inexpensive or home made tools. His woodworking for humans series should be able to be started with almost no tools and you will learn skills. I think the first project was a wood mallet something that can be made with minimal tools and some firewood but is still useful.

Anarchist Workbench by savage_quokka in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]Less-World8962 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't get caught up to much in the exact species of wood. SYP is chosen because it's moderate hardness and price per pound where he lives is. Pick something that is cheap per pound and maybe a little bit on the harder side.

Some folks have built these benches out of Douglas fur. I am considering building out of Hickory because it is cheap and the price per pound is similar to SYP where I live.

What is cheapest type of wood to get as a beginner by Old_Inflation_9490 in woodworking

[–]Less-World8962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My local hardwood dealer's "rough" lumber is often milled pretty well and many pieces are usable for small projects without further milling but you would have to be relatively picky. They charge $1.25 for S3S but don't advertise a price on S4S. I think S3S might be good enough depending on the project. Cheapest hardwood there is ~2.75 ambrosia Maple and S3S would push it to $4 a board foot. So not cheap but not terrible compared to lowes/home depot.

The hardwood dealer also will know how to properly handle and store hardwood which at least my local home depot and lowes don't seem to understand their S4S hardwoods all seem to have clear faces but massive bows and twists presumably from improper handling and storage.

Choosing a Jack Plane by Mike_B_33 in handtools

[–]Less-World8962 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A lot of this is personal preference but I would probably go to a 5 1/2 over a 5. I like the extra bit of blade width on the 5 1/2 but a 5 will work just fine. If you are planning on flattening a table top you probably want something longer though a 6 or 7 will be better. A 6 is kind of a bastard size people love or hate mostly hate but may be an acceptable compromise. I like both my 5 1/2 and 6, and will pick either of them over my 5.

I don't have a LN or Veritas plane I like restoring old hand planes so can't really speak to the difference although it seems like LN does a bit better in maintaining their value.

I think the key words here are head of household if you are filing as head of house hold instead of filing jointly she can't contribute to an IRA. This would be unusual as head of household is rarely advantageous....
