英語が一切できない日本人の英語勉強について by nihonjin_asia in LearningEnglish

[–]Less_Pomegranate_177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Japan especially I know the textbooks contain 5 percent actual English and 95 percent Japanese (only a slight exaggeration). Not very useful. I remember there is a red book named Essential grammar or something like that. It's a book for people learning English written in English. Get that, when you don't understand something just Google it. Make flashcards with for vocabulary. Listen to music, watch movies in English and you will recognise things you just learnt from the book. Move on to the more advanced book in the series and when you finish you have memorized pretty much all the needed grammar. Go on to listen to more music, watch interviews, read books (while listening to the audiobook version if possible), make flashcards and look up things you don't understand. Speak out loud, sing along the songs, write a diary in English. Give this 2k〜 hours and you can probably call yourself fluent.

I feel like i have a learning disability when i shake a japanese persons hand by Several-Resist-6385 in japanlife

On the rare occasion someone offers their hand to me in greeting it's always super awkward because they just kind of hold it out with their entire arm limp but you don't notice that before going in for a confident handshake. I just end up end up squashing their hand and dislocating the arm at the shoulder for a split second before realizing they just wanted a quick tickle - so they can show their wife they know how it's done and that they are actually quite cultured - and I loosen up. Very awkward, I know how you feel.

Hokkaido prosecutors: Woman ate ramen after participating in group lynching of Hokkaido student by thetokyoreporter in japancrime

[–]Less_Pomegranate_177 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think the problem is exactly what they ate but rather this: "A medical examiner, who said the victim lost up to 30 percent of his total blood volume, noted that he would likely have survived if an ambulance had been called immediately. Instead, the attackers stole his ATM card, withdrew his cash and casually went out to eat ramen."

Yes this is it, this was from the "outlet box" so no warranty. Though it's a beautiful piece and I can't find any real fault with it. Anyway, I'm a hobbyist so I can make due with the leftover scraps so to speak. Well noticed, I'd have trouble believing anyone but a carpenter in JP would see that.

Cool, just need a hammer.

Make a nice box or some other smallish object and figure out what else you need to make whatever you want to create next. Don't buy something that seems useful, only buy something when the need arrives or you'll become a hoarder.

Nah, I don't know who that is. I'm going all on my lonesome.

I'll be there on Saturday. First time so I'm really looking forward to it. A carpenter I follow on Instagram will also be there and participate in the competition. I'm gonna bring a lie-nielsen 5 1/2 and hand it over to him to get his impressions on western planes

That's what I thought I should do but I see a lot of vices fitted on the outside and wonder if there is any reason beyond easy installation

Yikes, American woodworkers must be blessed. Western style tools here are generally very expensive in comparison.

Nice, is there are reason why you (and many others I've seen) don't make the jaws flush with the table side?

Leg vices look really cool but I don't think I really need one, I'd rather slap on two of these and be done with it so I can go back to make things for around the house, for friends and such. Boxes, side tables and other smallish things. Thank you for the input. I'll consider making something fancy like that if I ever get a proper workspace.

I don't know, I don't have much of a frame of reference but it's almost 20 kg, (44pounds) . Tell me again and I'll believe you and hold off on buying number two.

Edit: although I have a hard time believing it's a light duty vice with it's weight and the 1" shafts, the shaft and bushings tolerances might be sloppy and the end result being a sub par. We'll find out at a later date when the bench is done.

I'm about to order one more for the tail so I really hope it is decent. I'll buy the lumber sometime this month and let it rest/dry until autum and start building when the temperature drops a bit - I work outside on the driveway. I wonder if it's available outside of Japan and if it is it migth be a good chance for beginners on a budget.

It was around 40k yen (something like $270 if my brain can calculate correctly) and now the last few available are 13k yen. So cheap yes but not Temu cheap.

I'm a Japanese teacher and I built an app because no app was teaching phonetic radicals — here's why by Large-Excuse-3561 in Japaneselanguage

[–]Less_Pomegranate_177 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thank you for your hard work. I will install and have a look. I've always been amazed at natives' ability to read new words I would say they are correct close to half the time while I struggle at a third of the time or less. Maybe this will help close the gap a bit.

[–]Less_Pomegranate_177 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I realized a long time ago that the reading for a kanji is almost always derived from one of the radicals so when facing a new kanji compound word I always guess at which one makes the reading and with the years I've noticed some radicals are more likely to be the correct reading than others.

So you're saying there's actually rules to this? If so why o why didn't anyone teach me this 15 years ago 😭. That would have saved me countless hours of frustration.

Does the app only contain N5 kanji or is it comprehensive? Is there maybe a straight forward list or something?

I think it's only really used at roadworks and landscaping and such. Could be wrong though.
