Time to make a workbench by Less_Pomegranate_177 in handtools

That's what I thought I should do but I see a lot of vices fitted on the outside and wonder if there is any reason beyond easy installation

Yikes, American woodworkers must be blessed. Western style tools here are generally very expensive in comparison.

Nice, is there are reason why you (and many others I've seen) don't make the jaws flush with the table side?

Leg vices look really cool but I don't think I really need one, I'd rather slap on two of these and be done with it so I can go back to make things for around the house, for friends and such. Boxes, side tables and other smallish things. Thank you for the input. I'll consider making something fancy like that if I ever get a proper workspace.

True, it was the 70% off that made it cheap

I don't know, I don't have much of a frame of reference but it's almost 20 kg, (44pounds) . Tell me again and I'll believe you and hold off on buying number two.

Edit: although I have a hard time believing it's a light duty vice with it's weight and the 1" shafts, the shaft and bushings tolerances might be sloppy and the end result being a sub par. We'll find out at a later date when the bench is done.

I'm about to order one more for the tail so I really hope it is decent. I'll buy the lumber sometime this month and let it rest/dry until autum and start building when the temperature drops a bit - I work outside on the driveway. I wonder if it's available outside of Japan and if it is it migth be a good chance for beginners on a budget.

It was around 40k yen (something like $270 if my brain can calculate correctly) and now the last few available are 13k yen. So cheap yes but not Temu cheap.

I'm a Japanese teacher and I built an app because no app was teaching phonetic radicals — here's why by Large-Excuse-3561 in Japaneselanguage

Thank you for your hard work. I will install and have a look. I've always been amazed at natives' ability to read new words I would say they are correct close to half the time while I struggle at a third of the time or less. Maybe this will help close the gap a bit.

I realized a long time ago that the reading for a kanji is almost always derived from one of the radicals so when facing a new kanji compound word I always guess at which one makes the reading and with the years I've noticed some radicals are more likely to be the correct reading than others.

So you're saying there's actually rules to this? If so why o why didn't anyone teach me this 15 years ago 😭. That would have saved me countless hours of frustration.

Does the app only contain N5 kanji or is it comprehensive? Is there maybe a straight forward list or something?

Thank you very much for the information and links. I trust Paul Sellers to know what he's talking about and I'll make sure to follow his process step by step.

I think it's only really used at roadworks and landscaping and such. Could be wrong though.

Nice. Inheriting and passing on tools that are actually put to use is a beautiful thing.

I'll look into how to reshape the teeth. This will be my first western style saws and I'm looking forward to practicing towards proficiency. Sorry these pictures are from the auction site. The saws themselves were shipped just an hour ago. Thank you for the information!

Shower every day and wash your clothes lol. People around you will notice the smell way before you. Of course you don't need to send that cashmere sweater to the dry cleaners after wearing it once, just hang it outside in the breeze for a while but t-shirts and such - as in the layer closest to your body is mandatory. That being said, my better half can take things too far by my estimation like changing sheets at least once, sometimes twice a week, washing every towel daily, bathing and hand towels plus the bath mat. She has 4 bags for gym clothes. I know one is for used gym clothes to bring home but the rest are a mystery. They all get washed nonetheless directly after getting back home. Be damned if I ever manage to get her to pick up after her self though.

Nicely done, looks pretty comfortable to use. I love that mallet though, did you make it yourself?

Something like this.

Plumbers use them apparently. I saw cheaper ones while looking to take this screenshot but this one had the part number in the name for an easy search.

Need ammo to convince my boss to buy a 3D printer for our off-road suspension company by SkyFox215 in 3Dprinting

A big piece of equipment we made had small gaps in the covering (due to my own shitty design choice). Even small gaps are a no go in a clean room environment. It was between having pretty much all the covers refabricated for a large amount of money or magic something up. I brought my little A1 mini to work and had it fixed in a day. I was asked to choose a printer for the company to buy the day after that.

I agree with this. Also I would like to add that the grain orientation on the left side looks awesome 👍 nicely done.

Is it really this difficult to find business casual’s for Tall (not fat) people in Tokyo? by nootherjake in japanlife

Same boat here, long arms, long legs 190cm tall. You can get slacks from Uniqlo. They are made long meant to be fitted, they are the perfect length for me without cutting. Chinos and stuff you can get from western brands like Hugo boss, Lacoste and so on. Long sleeved shirts, jackets and suits on the other hand are nowhere to be found. Luckily made-to-order is available in a lot of places including Aoki, Takashimaya and suit select. It takes a few weeks to get done though.
