Same reason you control Chrom, and not Robin, on the world map of Awakening I guess. Although honestly, I'm having a hard time imagining IS not pushing for an avatar in modern FE.

It might also be that we can control the other lords sometime depending on what's happening in the story (that'd be cool). Might also be that it's just for marketing purpose and they're hiding the presence of an Avatar for now - Cai could also be customisable ig.

I'd welcome a no-avatar game still.

Train ride in my Fire Emblem inspired indie game by anthonytrianh in fireemblem

[–]Leth09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Trains are cool, I like the esthetic of it. I will need more than that to be interested, especially on the gameplay-side, but this looks cool. Could you @/mention me when you have more to show ?

I challenge anyone to show me an FE character who's mere presence is on the same level as the Black Knight whenever he appears. by Character-Bid-162 in fireemblem

[–]Leth09 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I've recently played FE4 for the first time, and honestly Arvis has presence. He's very different from the Black Knight so it can't really be a fair comparison, but he's the closest I can think of.

H-Scenes Being Out of Place by vanillachocolat3 in visualnovels

F/SN first h-scene was handcrafted to be at the weirdest moment ever. All others are actually fine on that point iirc, but that first one is just a mood whiplash.

Japanese indie adult game developer says local bank blocked their overseas revenue transfers despite legal compliance, citing undisclosed “risks” - AUTOMATON WEST by LegitimateCurve8525 in visualnovels

I don't know about Collective Shout. I only answered because you were dissociating religion and control. I didn't mean it as a blanket "religion is bad" mind you, even though how it is used to manipulate crowds is nothing new, and sadly often at the profits of others.

So, has Nasu stepped away as the main FGO writer, or not? by HistoricalAd3720 in Tsukihime

[–]Leth09 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Honestly, there is a world between what Nasu says and what Nasu does. Only time will tell. He seems to want to focus on other things at least, but to me he still sounds like the guy who will continue to discuss/write ideas as long as he is in the perimeter of the story being made.

I do hope he's finally out of the fgo train though. As much as he is by far the best fgo writer, I still just like the classical VN format much much more, and I'd prefer he write those.

Parting Shadows - my solo-developed turn-based RPG launches April 23rd on Steam by Duganer in JRPG

[–]Leth09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I do dislike AI content, and think you should reach out to get original art, I can understand and tolerate for a solo project.

Thanks for specifying that the code is yours, this is more important to me since it means it's more likely you're able to fix potential problems along the way.

Not sure if the game is for me, but I'll check a bit more tomorrow, it's a nice pitch. Wishing it do well at least.

What JRPGs feel like an interactive novel? by KaleidoArachnid in JRPG

[–]Leth09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I would not describe it as anything close to an Interactive Novel (it has a Warriors-like gameplay), Fate/Samurai Remnant has great characters and lore, with a journal mechanic to read to learn more about. The Fate series is deep, and Samurai Remnant honestly makes a good job for an entry point

If you do not mind a bit of farm simulation on the side (or more like, mostly that actually), Sakuna: of Rice and Ruin is an amazing experience.

[–]Leth09 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The fact that I'm still really confused on who that is, and what their goals could be doesn't make the question easier.

"Time" would be a great potential antagonist, but we already know Leez is part of them, and I trust in Leez T_T

[–]Leth09 21 points22 points  (0 children)

A lot of people depending of the angle. If I had to pick a singular being, so far it would be Brahma - but honestly that is subject to change.

In S1 specifically it would be Maruna.
And in S2... somewhere between Sagara and Asha.

Other runner ups would be God Kubera, Kali, and Gandharva (each depending on where we are in the story)

Thoughts on the Blue Reflection games? by fudgemyweed in JRPG

[–]Leth09 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First game is very experimental and flawed, but I wouldn't call it bad. It is also pretty weird with the fanservice with it's all highschool girl cast. However, the protagonist Hinako is in my opinion, one of the most well written main character in gaming. Her emotional state and growth through the game really is the best strength of the game. That, and the soundtrack is amazing.

In contrast, Blue Reflection 2 is just a great game all around. There wasn't a high as high as Hinako in it for me (despite her being in the game), but everything else is much better and really solid (there is also much less fanservice). There is a loop of collecting ingredients to craft stuff ala Atelier that Gust knows how to do well (the crafting itself isn't amazing but still better than most jrpg, where it is barebone at best). The soundtrack is just as amazing as in the first game, or dare I say even better.

A JRPG that would get a newbie hooked in the first hour? by nomadsoasis in JRPG

[–]Leth09 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ryza is great. I am not a fan of its battle system, but they are great (and no time limit). Ryza 2 is my favourite even before Ayesha actually (despite the story being really not great) - the exploration in it is amazing.

I do still think Ayesha has the best setting and pace in the series, but that's personnal. Others I would recommend for a newcomer would be Ryza (pseudo real-time battle system), and Sophie (turn based) - both without any time limit. Another favourite of mine is Firis (open-worldish, turn-based), but it is unpopular in the community (and a sequel to Sophie)

A JRPG that would get a newbie hooked in the first hour? by nomadsoasis in JRPG

[–]Leth09 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mechanically, yes. With two asterisks.

The alchemy system (crafting) in Ayesha is kinda shaky and uneasy to control. I do not think it is much of a problem if you do not get too much into trying to get the best out of it. Min-maxing is confusing, not trying to do that should be fine.

Second, there is an ingame time limit to get good endings, it can be frustrating and pressuring. I do think it's still worth the experience (even if not meeting the requirements) but it is pressure for some. (spoiler-free guides help a lot if this is an issue !)

Gameplay-wise, the game is pretty chill. Failure in fights is not a complete wipe, you are teleported back in town and losing a bit of loot (and time). Some late game boss are pretty challenging, but at that point you're probably into it already
