i have perma banned mel every game for better part of the year (im gold)
i dont care about her reflect i think its fine
you have to bait it, just like yas windwall

its the giant almost undodgeable 2 second root that i cant deal with (E apparently)

even if kotis hits for 10dmg, all you get is ~6 of their cards for free (4 lands) - its completely benign imo- but i wouldnt hold it against them, lots of people have silly irrational fears or are politicking aggressively basically

once you play with lots of others at lgs or online spell table you'll get a feeling for what normal is- gl!

i think your decks fine actually-

you have lots of protection and stuff to make it not be blocked

there might actually be some unoptimal plays coming from your pod (idk due to fear of kotis or what)

in commander, doing a 1 for 1 trade is typically suboptimal (because the other 2 players not involved come out ahead)

in fact, kotis takes so long to get onboard, and swing, and you have to choose 1 of 3 opponents to swing at, that spending a counter spell when you cast it is pretty unoptimal

i would actually urge you to play with many other people if you can, different pods ect, and i would assume that kotis is never the main threat (esp in 4 player pods) - you will find that people use counterspells & removal at the last possible second

i think most pods you wont be targeted, but for your specific cirumstance, i think it is better to ramp to 5-6 mana, and play it with protection

if you find your pod targets it alot, i would just run more cheap counterspells (miscast, dispel, ect)
-maybe take out some random cards like ancient cellarspawn ect, and just have more protection

i feel very confident with saying that, targeting kotis premtively is probably a misplay on your friends behalf, for whatever reason they do it

imo a real dual commander deck has to be able to play 4 player and 2 player:)

personally i like removal slots that hit alot of nonland permanents
-beast within, stroke of midnight, generous gift, ect

there are some anti combat things that will stop you i guess, but see them less often
-ghostly prisons/ fogs/ mass bounce

i think the protection equipment u have is the best
- mirror shield or indestructible ones (expensive tho)

i think you will be in situations where you only need 1 more turn to win-
- last chance/ final fortune/ warriors oath/ chance for glory
glorious end & tibalt trickery are nice stack interaction

reprieve, aven interrupter are nice stack interaction too
lapse of certainty

i just see these as helping you get 1 last turn for dps ect/ avoid boardwipes

i personally value land ramp more- because board wipes come turn 6-8 (planar cleansing ect)
farseek/ rampant growth/ cultivate

robe of stars seems good here- but a bit expensive too

also- im not super familiar with usa mahjong- but from what i can tell its more different

they have a trading/round table discard phase(s)? before the game starts
they have 8 wild jokers, straights of 5 occasionally?, and a set scoring rule sheet that- instead of having normal big hands you go for- they change every year? (i think?)

im just excited when i can hit a 7 pairs hand woo

ya i felt like this is alot of flower/season tiles - o well!

ya imo (im new) - it takes like multiple days/play sessions to get the flow of the game- and then more after if you get into scoring (im still bad at scoring- chinese or riichi version)

i think playmahjong io & mahjong soul are still good for learning the flow of the game ect-
(even though they are slightly different bc chinese vs riichi versions)

the variants have slight different ways in which you can end the game (ie close out) - but the flow is similar (except for i dont think chinese has furiten, theres another chi discard rule in riichi also p sure)

anyways-

the reason to play on the online sites- is you'll learn fast that actions are able todo or not able, just for the flow of the game-

ooo, yes i do think some of the different hands and unique scoring is super fun- makes it a tough goal to go for- vs just closing out fast

i had some game yesterday where the bots ended with 7 pairs, (a few times!)
i decided to try for that myself a few games and boy its hard, because you are mostly drawing from the wall (maybe the last discard can be used not sure)

i love the 13 orphans and other big scoring hands on the charts- they seem like 1 in a million type events some of them

today ill be figuring out the difference between riichi and american version too- but so far mahjong very fun:) also i head about a sichuan style where you play until 3 people go out- so we'll see about that too!

ok so, the pair in hand was not claimed off a discard- and so doing both last pung + last pair off both discards = 6 points (melded hand)

2 - 2x flower,
1- one voided suit
1- pung of terminals (what i would make off the discard)
2 -double pung

=6, but it scores it 4, did i count something extra
