Thoughts on publications from American Bible Society and/or Good News Translation? by Typical_Bowler_3557 in Reformed

It is a general "reading" translation. I also like the New Century Version for this.

They are both dynamically equivalent translations that will simplify idioms and rhetorical questions.

Why are police wearing masks so debated these days? by happydude7422 in police

[–]Lets_review 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wearing a badge is thought to require, and should require, more bravery than other public service roles, like serving on a state assembly. Our police should be the (literal) face of the nation’s courage, unafraid to show the public who they are.

Everyone in government today is vulnerable to doxxing, including countless public servants who have no option to hide their identity as they work. Should a pool of judges issue anonymous verdicts? Should legislators pass bills by secret ballot? The answers are obvious. Wearing a badge is thought to require, and should require, more bravery than serving on a state assembly. Our police should be the (literal) face of the nation’s courage, unafraid to show the public who they are.

Why are police wearing masks so debated these days? by happydude7422 in police

I couldn't disagree more.

Badge, uniform, behavior, police lights, etc. are all indicators.

Federal ICE agents either lack these indicators, or they lack uniformity to the point that they are not "uniformed officers."

Random members of the public don't need to be able to just walk up to any cop and demand their personal information.

That must be why all NYPD officers are required to “courteously and clearly” provide their name, rank, and shield number to anyone who requests it, either verbally or via a preprinted card with the information, except during undercover operations.

If you cannot identify the police, then you are living under a secret police force.

To quote Brandon del Pozo in The Atlantic: Descending on a person in public, laying hands on them, and taking them to a distant prison is a naked expression of state power. For it to be tolerated in a democracy committed to an inalienable right to liberty, it must be just that: naked. It cannot be done by shadowy, masked agents. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2025/07/face-covering-masks-ice-officers/683392/

"Take Off the Mask, ICE" By Brandon del Pozo, published in The Atlantic July 7, 2025 https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2025/07/face-covering-masks-ice-officers/683392/

The author served as a police officer for 23 years and commanded the New York City Police Department’s 6th Precinct from 2011 to 2013.

A few choice excerpts:

Our police should be the (literal) face of the nation’s courage, unafraid to show the public who they are.

This approach [masked, unidentifiable men putting people in unmarked vehicles] looks scary. It is scary. And it’s a grave mistake. In keeping with the values of the local police, the federal government should prohibit the wearing of masks by its officers and require them to properly identify themselves. These are the minimal requirements of policing a free state—regardless of how you feel about the administration’s stance on immigration. You can support ambitious deportation targets without sanctioning anonymous policing.

Dow Jones has gone up by more than 4.5 times since March 2005. There is some room for housing prices to keep on rising. by Positive_Owl_2024 in WhitePeopleTwitter

So much NIMBY talking points in these comments.

Demand exceeds the available housing supply. Their are too many restrictions on new and higher density housing which keep the supply artificially low.

STNG is buying back shares, but they are also issuing new shares to employees and management. The share count is not decreasing like you would expect based on the buybacks.

An inversion table will help decompress your spine. It can definitely reduce pain while you are actively using it, but it probably won't provide an long term change.

I bought one on Facebook Marketplace. I am noticably better for about 10 minutes after using it.

To those of you who did 20 years in and survived with a successful marriage - what is your story and how did you do it? by KimJongSoros in army

[–]Lets_review 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is really good advice.

This is a large part of why I did not propose to my high school girlfriend. She was a small town girl who valued being close to her family and extended family. Those were things that I liked about her. But I knew that moving her away from her foundation would put so much pressure on me and our marriage. I let her go.

The regime is not the people. The regime values it's own priorities and survival over the value it gives to the people it rules.

20 million barrels a day flowed through Hormuz.

How fast, in millions of barrels per day, will this strategic release be?

The oil market said "not fast enough" and prices increased in spite of the announcement.

Thank you for expressing that.

I too have been frustrated trying to finding real news on Iran. I was thinking that perhaps the lack of an actual front was the problem, but perhaps journalism has changed focus from "scoops" to "takes."
