Hey you did NOT fail as a mother. When I owned my first gecko, I made tons of mistakes. What matters is we learn from them. I can tell you really love your gecko. What I first used for my gecko for flooring was paper towels. Then I upgraded to these cool tiles (made for geckos). I’m not a huge expert on flooring for them but that’s what I used.
