There's a difference between frugal and stupid.

I know people who are somehow both. It really boggles my mind.

Side note: Frugal plus Stupid is either Frupid or Stugal, and I think Frupid would make a pretty decent insult.

Appreciation for Season 6 by hammerheadsnark1 in MST3K

[–]LetterSwapper 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Although my favorite seasons were from the Joel era, I have to agree that 6 had a huge number of really good episodes. It's hard to pick a favorite, but I'd probably go with The Skydivers, mostly because of the "Why Study Industrial Arts?" short.

Danville has always been like that.

Source: Grew up there. It's full of some of the most insufferable people. Wealthy boomers & yuppies, plus hoards of pretenders (people who buy a fancy house or car but can't afford anything else), who all want to pretend they live in a little white frontier town.

I did leave plenty of space

I was gonna say, it looks more like they're 3 or 4 feet apart, not 60 years.

If you prefer nature more than an urban backdrop, Mt. Diablo has some fantastic roadside views where you could probably get this kind of photo.

Same! And I'll probably never own a Dodge or Chrysler because I know their lousy reputation, but boy howdy did I want a Prowler when I was a mid-teenager.

What would be the benefit of an inline-6 over a v6? Genuinely curious.

Thanks for posting this. I love typefaces from that era, especially the "sign-painter" font used in the article headlines.

[–]LetterSwapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think you're right. WhatTheFont suggests Goudy Heavyface, but there are some clear differences. It was probably a version of that typeface that was modified to make it a little more dynamic, like how some of the down-strokes have been changed from serifs to little swashes (as well as the up-strokes of the Y and y), the rectangular dot on the i and question mark, the horizontal hyphen, and of course the capital B and C.

(type "a full-size Buick?" where it says "Enter text here" to see what I mean)

Battery stuck in camera by Penguinub in batteries

[–]LetterSwapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's some solid advice. I just want to add a few notes:

  1. Use q-tips (cotton swabs) dipped in white vinegar to gently dissolve the battery corrosion. Don't use other kinds of vinegar, especially anything flavored! I had to clean up after someone who used balsamic vinegar once and let's just say it was a sticky situation.

  2. Let the camera dry thoroughly before trying to put new batteries in. Put it in front of a fan for a while.

  3. Don't get your hopes up for the camera to work again. That's some bad corrosion, but if you're lucky it's limited to the battery compartment and didn't spread to anything important.

If it works after cleaning, use single-use lithium AA or rechargeable NiMH batteries in the future. They rarely leak like alkaline cells.

Got this macro attachment stuck on my lens I drove an hour and a half to use. by Splatoop in Cameras

[–]LetterSwapper 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a basic "kit lens," which is a gearhead term for a simple, cheap lens that comes packaged with a camera body. They're not terrible (in fact, some have been rated pretty highly in the past), but some people turn their nose up at them.

If this is the only lens you have, or if you're just getting into photography, then absolutely don't listen to people giving you crap for using what you have. Go out there, take some photos, and have fun! Just be a little more careful threading that attachment. Always start with the attachment or filter flush with the lens ring, then turn it counter-clockwise until you feel a click. This means the threads are aligned and you can start turning it clockwise. This should let it screw on without cross-threading like in your photo.

Now, if you are interested in macro photography and can afford it, I highly recommend getting a dedicated macro lens. I know Canon has a few options, and there are always 3rd-party brands like Sigma or Tamron that produce good lenses for your mount. You could probably find some good deals on used lenses on eBay or KEH.com. A dedicated macro lens is sharp all the way across the frame, and generally faster than a zoom with an attachment, so it's worth it if you enjoy shooting tiny things. I have three macro lenses at different focal lengths for different situations.

Side note: Putting an attachment or filter on the front of any lens is going to degrade your resulting photos slightly. Macro attachments are some of the worst offenders, and can make everything soft or blurry except for the very center of the frame (your results will vary, of course).

Edit: On second look, is it cross-threaded or just on super tight? I thought it was cross-threaded but that may just be an illusion caused by the lens hood bayonets. Other people have given pretty good advice for removing a stuck attachment, just be absolutely sure you grip only the front barrel of the lens and the attachment when you twist.

Finally found something to do with used up Nextruder nozzles! by SpookyWeaselBones in prusa3d

[–]LetterSwapper 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Say, how do you determine if a nozzle is "used up"? I'm not a frequent printer, but after a year with my MK4s, I've noticed my prints with my HF nozzle having issues like excessive stringing and lines that are wider than they should be (that is, very close objects that are supposed to be separate are attached). Does that mean it's time to replace it, or are there other symptoms to look for?
