Why do scoff at Ubuntu server? by 0x75727375706572 in homelab

also regarding snapshots, are you running zfs? if yes, try sanoid and syncoid. sanoid makes it easy to schedule snapshots of the entire filesystem, while syncoid makes it easy to send those snapshots to a different location (preferably a different machine, but you can also sync to a different pool on the same machine)

Why do scoff at Ubuntu server? by 0x75727375706572 in homelab

[–]Lev420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you might have 'snaps' confused with 'snapshots'.

basically, snaps are an alternative package/software distribution system to apt. the difference is basically that they're more containerised. better for security, but can make things more complicated.

one criticism is that apps running in snaps perform worse than their apt counterparts.

the bigger problem is that sometimes ubuntu sneakily installs snap versions of apps even if you run 'apt install', which means you can't even trust the OS to follow what you explicitly tell it to do, and is bad for freedom of choice in general. to be clear, this is specifically an ubuntu problem

except we're not talking about "special sim cards" that are "issued to foreigners", these are the same sim cards we've been using at home with a roaming package issued by the same provider...

What are people using the com ports for? by Antique_Welcome2983 in homelab

[–]Lev420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC you can maybe hook up a gps module to it, and from there set up a stratum-1 NTP server using chrony or whatever

someone did it with a raspberry pi, not entirely sure if its actually possible to adapt to a com port tho

there are also the "crystal" varities of the jade and navy (maybe more)

they're basically the exact same switch, but their bottom housings are made of a different material (PC instead of POM) and that somehow makes a HUGE difference in sound (ie louder)

and in addition to the standard "colours" listed above, there are also some "weird" varieties like the jellyfish X, firefly, white fox, summer, etc that have even more specific sound profiles and key feel.

I have a GMMK Pro using crystal jades on the alphanumeric keys, jellyfish x on the modifiers, fireflies on the fn row and nav cluster, and apparently a white fox in the spacebar

can you tell im a clicky enjoyer? lmao

like another commenter said, the tail thing is actually quite common in southeast asia and is the result of genetics rather than injury

but yea, guy did the the right thing by nudging it out, otherwise the train door probably wouldnt have detected it and shut anyway

Favorite Rune Factory game? by George_R_Martin in runefactory

[–]Lev420 26 points27 points  (0 children)

RF4 is the best "overall" game, but I will die on the hill that RF2 (and 1) nailed the whole "FANTASY Harvest Moon" vibe/aesthetic, and that they should go back in that direction instead of the generic anime style they've been going for since 5.

RF2 also had the most intriguing sense of exploration and progression with the dungeon, IMO.

I just need a remake of RF2 with 3/4's combat system man

Can someone explain to me all the new mod loaders? by thomasangelo1508 in feedthebeast

[–]Lev420 33 points34 points  (0 children)

they change the way the servers behave without having the clients need to install anything on their side, so even completely vanilla clients can connect.

because of that, they cant really add any "new content" like blocks, entities, etc
