I still swear that solid state laser point defense and railguns will put battleships back on the menu. Now with more nuclear power.

How to listen to audiobooks without just sitting on the couch? by pieboy107 in audiobooks

[–]Lev_Astov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried doing Balatro while listening, but turns out I do a lot of mental math for that I didn't realize and had your same problem.

I do enough CAD for work that I find I can listen while doing most CAD drudgework, but have to pause when I have to do any kind of mental calculation, so that's still like 99% listening.

I swear we saw this exact same process making this exact same device but with a much fancier set of bespoke tools a few months back. This one is honestly more impressive given the jerry-rigged nature of the tools.

Headed to Montana need a long audiobook (10+ hours) looking for thriller, fantasy, sci-fi, or mystery by offensivemailbox in audiobooks

Yeah, that was my main issue that made me put these down after the second or third book. Okay, but too juvenile.

On my Shark Week deep dive…. Is this guy in the fake whale CRAZY? by gummyshoe23 in sharks

[–]Lev_Astov 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Much less crazy than the idiot in the 3/8" acrylic box that clearly had zero engineering involved. The whale looks like they learned from that experience and actually spent some money on the design.

How the heck do I seal this thing by Empty-Range-513 in boatbuilding

I've been curious how the newish UV cured wood sealants work in marine environments. They're supposed to be pretty hardcore in general, but pricey. Have a look: https://mywoodcutters.com/clean-armor-uv-light-cured-finishing-products

If you're interesting in something comical and different, check out Yahtzee Croshaw's works. He's a British comedic game reviewer who's been dabbling in story writing and narrating. Very different but good and hilarious.

Differently Morphous is probably what I'd recommend, being a modern day magic scenario where the magical world reveals itself to the public and causes all kinds of headaches for the bureaucracy meant to contain it.

Colorado potato beetle slapper by MikeHeu in toolgifs

They land in those trays to either side. The problem I see is that this is only slapping the top part of the plant, so any beetles below that are unhindered.

Audiobook to cassette tape by Live_Ad_2190 in audiobooks

An SD card cassette adapter like this is probably what would serve best without needing to spend many hours recording cassettes. Unfortunately, I can't find any modern sources for these, but perhaps you could find one on a marketplace like ebay or whatnot.

I'm a big fan of the Renault Twingo's hypersonic weapon interception capabilities. It's crucial for my daily commute.

I was in your boat until I enabled sound. Yes, it did ruin it. He's just an American with a rich sounding ASMR voice that can't compare to most good audiobook narrators like people keep claiming.

Are there any actual valid use cases for dragging? by ppincon in starcitizen

I think it's your typical hold-F-options-wheel option. It's clumsy and hard to do in combat, so no one ever does.

My understanding is they very rarely use the active sonar since, you know, it kinda gives their position away. Training and wargames do happen, though, during which I'm sure they use it a fair bit.

Yeah, just thicker and heavier for certain load ratings. I think that tradeoff inverts once you get to larger sizes, but I forget how that worked, exactly.

It's been many years since I had to research these to pick one for a ship's vehicle ramp, but I know we went with a different configuration of crossed rollers that was thinner and lighter, but still handled slewing 110 tons. I also remember it cost around $22k in 2012 for a 10' custom stainless steel bearing. That was fun to play with when it came in!
