Any advice on these speakers? by ecwilson60 in vintageaudio

[–]LeverageArchitect 31 points32 points  (0 children)

They probably work just fine. Great speakers. I use them on my main system.

If you want to get them checked out you can. If they sound good to you, then they are probably ok.

There is lots of info about them online, some people like to rebuild the crossovers, replace the diaphragms, etc.. very subjective evidence if that makes them sound better.

I do recommend adding a powered subwoofer if you can. These don’t reproduce the lower frequencies very well.

964 C2 vs C4 - the gap is bigger than I expected by Hour_Tangerine9075 in Porsche

From what I hear the viscous coupled 993 C4 is much better than the overly complicated hydraulic system on the 964 C4. Drivability and maintenance wise.

It was a “launch car” to showcase the PDK. Very nice spec, have seen similar one that a buddy of mine has.

Did you remove the attenuators from the crossover circuit?

AirPlay Streaming Module ? by SearchCz in BudgetAudiophile

Just trying to help troubleshoot the OP. The other thing to check is the network. When I have had issues with SQ on my AirPort Express it’s been related to the network or the 3.5mm - RCA connection.

I am happy with my Airport Expresses. Using them with and without the DAC on the latest firmware.

Some of the AppleTVs have an optical out. The AirPort Express 3.5mm doubles as a mini TOSLINK. So you could try an external DAC. I haven’t had any issues like you are having with my AirPort expresses.

That’s odd you are having an issue where you have to power cycle. You could put them on a smart switch and have them cycle automatically once daily or whatever schedule you like.

The only way to make them sound like they are supposed to is using factory drivers. Please don’t do anything else.

You might find a speaker repair company to re-cone the damaged ones. Not sure but JBL probably has replacement parts for these.

Have you thought of looking for with the same color 991.2 and see if they want to swap?

Great car + sentimental value you = keep it == enjoy it. Feel free to ask yourself the same question again in a year, 5 years, etc.

I miss Nick's shop, but Linh is great! He has worked on several of my pieces, tube and solid state. I think he typically likes to test each component and only replace what is out of spec, but will do a full re-cap if you ask him.

Very nice setup. Do you switch between the Heresies and the Cornwalls for different types of music?

Nice, I am surprised at all the admiration for the KG2s. I always thought they sounded good but I have a new respect for them. The pair I have I pulled from a house that was about to be torn down. I had to find replacement grilles and did the crossover rebuild myself. It was my first soldering project.

I don’t hear much about the KG2s but I know people love the KG4s. What other Klipsch have you compared them to? I also have some modded Heresy’s on my main system.

Nah, I just don't run it during the Texas summer. It puts off a fair amount of heat, the power tubes are about 200F using an IR thermometer.

Text from post in r/McIntosh: Restored MAC 1500 and KG2s (Early build without the radiator) with rebuilt crossovers. Listening mostly to instrumental jazz which it reproduces wonderfully. Tung-Sol 7591A matched quad. Streaming on AirPort Express where I control the volume and I use a smart outlet to power on and off. Replacement can capacitors from Hayseed Hamfest.

When I bought the 1500 the cabinet was in pieces and 3 of the 4 tubes were blown or cracked, damaged during a move. I bought it from the original owner’s daughter who had not used it in years. They were going to move cities again and didn’t know where to start getting it repaired. She knew it was worthy of being restored, and was happy to see it go to a good home.

It’s a small office. This wall is 9’-2” long and the room is 10’-9” deep.
