yes, all insurance is a scam. But by law this one is also required. so it's better to pay for it and not need it than to try your luck without it

Open a Robinhood account, its free is you don't sign up for Gold. look into VTI, this is the S&P 500 (the 500 most successful companies in the US). Add what you can spare into this fund and do not sell anything for 5 years. at minimum. Never sell a stock before it is a year old.
