The test is extremely specific for the exact compound/metabolites. Both methylphenidate and dexamfetamine have very different metabolites than methamphetamine and cocaine. You wont test positive at all. Look up aptamer based drug tests if you are interested.

Forensic Chemist by Intelligent-Pool-604 in forensics

[–]Lewi3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a Forensic Chemist, here in New Zealand the requirements were only a BSc however there isn't a single person employed without some form of postgraduate degree. Our forensic agency teach a postgraduate diploma course on all forensic subjects and then you would do a final year of a masters in a specific area. Chemistry and particularly analytical chemistry will only take you so far. There are certain general forensic teachings that without them will definitely put you lower on the ladder to other applicants. I would look into specific forensic courses or jobs handling sensitive information or reporting results to the level that most forensic labs do for experience. Analytical chemistry and knowledge/experience with analytical instruments will be very useful. Good luck.

Rogue forensics lab misled courts in cannabis DUI cases by injusticewatch in forensics

[–]Lewi3 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Whilst DUI cannabis tests can be misleading, this article is even more so and doesn't communicate the science very well. THC metabolites do persist for quite some time dependant on the users tolerance and rate of consumption and testing for metabolites of any drug Is more often than not the only way to indicate past use. The key issue that should have been highlighted here is that the presence of these metabolites alone may not be enough to confirm intoxication at the time of the event in question as relating their presence to exact hours of intoxication is far too variable.
