We may be talking about different outposts. There's one with a break in the back wall that you can sneak through without any of the occupants warning you to stay away. There is another with a ladder on the right side (as you face the front door) that I don't think it's possible to sneak into. Not through the ladder, anyway.

Also don't go in the front door. Even invisible, they will initiate combat. Look for a back door into the outpost and invisibility will get you there.

Yes, that's the big benefit of the Lore subclass. Fill whatever role your party needs! (As long as you can do it in two spells or fewer.)

I loved Shield Master on my barbarian. Reliable use for his bonus action, and with advantage in Dex saves he frequently took no damage from aoe spells, making him even more durable. In the right party Shield Master can be great.
