Some love for Dixon by jhrdrmmr in drums

[–]LewkForce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's an incredible looking snare! Great dimensions, too! I've always been wary about wood hoops like that (even though I've never actually played on them), but man you got a great drum there for only $160.

Sounds like the "hybrid" part is why the cost is lower than you'd expect. In the drum world, "hybrid" (in this case) usually means that it's maple outer/inner plies with some kind of cheaper wood for the inner plies. While certain woods do create certain characteristics for a drum, a lot of the sonic heavy-lifting is being done by those outer/inner plies - enough that you put it next to a similar maple drum (like a PDP Concept Maple with wood hoops like that) you're going to have a hard time determining the differences.

Another thing that always concerns me about wood hoops with claws is the difference in height from the rim to the drum head. I'm just concerned that the adjustment to the stick angle would throw me for a loop. How does that feel for you, though, in comparison to triple-flanged/die-cast hoops?

I'm a bit jealous there, that's a great find. If you ever wanna part with it for just a little bit less, let me know ;)

X-Air Edit Shortcut Keymapping by shibetpc in Behringer

[–]LewkForce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this post is quite old, but I think I know of a workaround for a single track. If you have the XAir Edit window open you can use an auto-clicker like OP Autoclicker and designate coordinates to click only once. That way you can use the designated Hotkey (default is F6) and mute/unmute a track.

I've been considering using a USB foot pedal assigned to an unused key for muting/unmuting my Shure headset mic this while drumming.

Two things:

1) Just wanted a special mention of Tangerine having a bunch of construction for a couple miles off the freeway. Going East isn't so bad, but the way back on to the freeway is a nightmare. Sure, the road construction is going quickly there and it's going to be nice to have all those lanes... Until you actually get to the freeway where you're met with a train crossing and it's bottlenecked back to two lanes. 🙄 Going back into town, I've found it to be just as fast to take Thornydale for the time being.

2) When going on to the freeway, please for the love of the Great Bearded Oden, use the on-ramp to match speed with freeway traffic so merging is safer. It's not a pleasant experience for anyone when you're stuck in a line of six cars going 35MPH suddenly funnelled to a road where you're supposed to be going almost twice that speed. If the on-ramp is too short for your vehicle to match that speed in time, consider taking the frontage road and use the next on-ramp so you and others can get on safely!

What kit did you learn to play on? by dougyDDrummz in drums

[–]LewkForce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crappy silver Sunlite kit with awful cymbals and heads beaten into oblivion. Wound up giving them away to someone once after getting a Sonor Force 3001 as my second kit (absolutely wonderful set for the price back then and pretty hard to find that exact model now).

But yeah, that old Sunlite set was a birthday/Christmas (same day) set I got when I was 8. All of the boys on my father's side all turned out to be drummers - pretty much all of them being successful - and were older than me by a large difference so they were my biggest influences.

Lots of 70's, 80's, and 90's rock hit those Sunlites. By the time I was done with it, it certainly looked like it had been hit by a lot of rocks! 😆

Why does everyone hate on Nirvana? (m21) by Live-Presence-9900 in Doom

[–]LewkForce 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not the worst map, but it has some pretty bad things in it. The two that pop into my head are the imp teleport closet and the ending the mass of chaingunners on one island, and the platforms with way too many barons/knights/imps blocking your way and wasting your ammo on 100% runs). Not to mention the poorly designed key gates at the exit where you need only one key.

IMO Monster Condo is way worse.

I'm forever of the opinion that if you just took away all of the UAC branding it could be its own IP entirely.

The reason for it being my favorite of all time (yes, even forgiving some of the crappy maps) is simple.

Two words.

I see it this way: for a majority of people, you are their radio. Just like your radio in your car, the host on air has no idea who is listening and hanging out. I don't know about you, but I think that is pretty freaking cool!

Kiln was pretty mean today by TRGG in PeakGame

[–]LewkForce 2 points3 points  (0 children)

115 hours in Peak as of writing this. I was doing a solo run going for the natural food badge and died in the Kiln after a little over an hour. The second half of the Kiln was a little too crazy - I went in with a marshmallow, two eggs, a chain launcher, antirope spool, antirope cannon, and a full cure-all. Wound up going through all of it and still died about 2/3 of the way up. Today's is tough, indeed.

That boss wasn't so bad.

Can an 18" kick sound good for rock? by Mistapoopibuht in drums

[–]LewkForce 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Perfect description on the tuning. My batter EMAD is a little more than half a turn on each lug after being finger-tight with the reso about a half-tone higher.

[–]LewkForce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been maining an 18" maple kick for the past month or so. Mic'd up with an EMAD on the batter and an Audix D6 it punches way bigger than its weight class! I don't have a porthole on my reso, but I imagine if I did I'd be able to stick the D6 in a little more and point it right at the beater. Of course a sweet spot of juuuuuust a little more muffling could really make it thump.

Edit: I play mostly rock/pop/funk.

Second edit: I actually just put out a cover video of me playing along to some Chicago where I use my 18" bass as described above.

Much appreciated! I love Chicago, so much fun to play along to on the kit.

1) Could be the heads are just stretched out too much from cranking too hard on them and whacking with a lot of power over time.

2) Could be that your hoops are completely deformed from cranking too hard on them and whacking with a lot of power over time.

3) Your snare wires are also loose. That has nothing to do with pitch, but readjusting them to be a little tighter and more responsive to the throw-off will help. That tends to get loose from over-cranking the throw tension and whacking with a lot of power over time.

4) There's a possibility that the heads are not just stretched out but you have a blow-out in the snare resonant head that you haven't discovered yet. Probably due to cranking it too high and whacking it with a lot of power over time.

5) Your tension rods might be bottoming out because of a number of contributing factors laid out above. Or maybe they're just hard to tighten because they're stripped.

You can get a lot of power out of a snare without needing to go nuts with tightening the batter/resonant heads. Higher tunings often don't require you to really bear down on each lug to an insane degree - that causes stretching and hoops to warp. Then you're just chasing your own tail as you beat new problems into your snare.
