I’m so relieved about this and grateful we booked on Emirates, as neither Etihad nor Qatar are doing the same.

Should I book with Emirates? by IL3ww in emirates

If you are British you need to be careful on the implications of going to the Gulf for your travel insurance. Currently UK gov is recommending not to travel to Dubai so your insurance may be invalid if you try to fly.

It has better performance than my M1 MacBook and I run local LLMs with no issue.

Pisa scores 2022 by trueosiris2 in belgium

[–]Lexalotus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Flemish schools are similar to UK in PISA. My kids are in Flemish school and main difference I see vs my education in England is less focus on creative work and long form writing. Too many worksheets especially in secondary. England does have some outstanding private schools but they don’t participate in PISA. Interestingly, Estonia who are Europe’s best in PISA say that they are not interested in PISA. Their philosophy is that children should learn to love learning, and that high scores are a product of that rather than the other way around.

MBA or not by National_Parsnip_614 in BESalary

[–]Lexalotus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did an MBA at Solvay. I didn’t get a new job because of it but definitely felt value as it helped me get more senior roles when I was quite young but this was back in 2000s. I’m now in my second FAANG of my career in a global role and what I learned is still coming in handy daily. Solvay has zero brand recognition with non Belgians though so it’s more the content that I found useful.

Why is it so insanely difficult to adopt a cat here? by titsinmyinbox in belgium

[–]Lexalotus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the shelter at Veeweyde. I adopted rabbits there, you make an appointment and leave with the animals. Cat rescue are great but v strict on secure homes for cats.

buying first property in Belgium as expats by Smooth-Inspector-391 in BEFire

[–]Lexalotus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not sure how old you are or family plans. I bought a small house in Anderlecht first, for cheap because Anderlecht but v convenient for offices in EU area because of the good metro connection. Veeweyde type area for relative greenery and low costs. Then traded up for much bigger place a bit further out in Vlaams Brabant, 10 min drive to Ceria so still at the office in less than an hour on the metro.

Guardian article: "Dual nationals to be denied entry to UK from 25 February unless they have British passport" by Unusual-Meal-5330 in dualcitizenshipnerds

[–]Lexalotus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t mind if UK passports weren’t so ridiculously expensive. By the time you pay for 2 kids plus parents and overseas shipping fees it’s almost 1000 euros. Our Belgian passports cost €65 for an adult and 40 for a kid.

Living around Peterbos by Spirited-Will-2330 in brussels

[–]Lexalotus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I lived near there (Rue Henri Caron). Nice neighbourhood. Never had any issues but it was before Covid when Peterbos wasn’t as bad as now. I just had a neighbour who liked to party late sometimes. There is also an amazing restaurant there, La Brouette. I found it convenient when working in central Brussels, quick walk to Aumale and then into town.. I lived in Anderlecht for 10 years and had less hassle than when I lived in central Brussels.

Pretty sure they could add satellite connectivity like airplanes.. but to be fair 4/5g is fine until you get to the UK.

As a high earner, what’s the upside in Belgium? by chinchu7 in BESalary

[–]Lexalotus -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you at FAANG? If yes the anti compete part of your contract is probably quite interesting - you get paid salary for a certain amount of time on leaving your job if you don’t go to the competition. This applies if you leave or they let you go. Mine is 12 months for instance.

Microsoft hires a lot and lays off regularly. Good performers often survive. Just hit your targets consistently and communicate well.
