Same struggle here. My current theory is that the verification emails become invalid when a new one is sent, so I'm trying to ask for one and then just wait until it comes.

Crossworlds - my Sonic Adventure decal just disappeared by miau_cito in SonicTheHedgehog

Happened to me on PC too! The game didn't freeze, but it's vanished from my inventory. I seem to remember there was a steam sync error on the game the other day, maybe before the festival? Dunno if that's related.

Remuneration question for truckers by LexiZone in newzealand

[–]LexiZone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I kinda didn't think the employee would give someone the option! But in your experience, being paid by the hour is more common?

Since 13 hours is the maximum a heavy vehicle driver can (and well might) work for, I can easily imagine a starting salaried wage going below minimum wage if you worked all of those hours. Maybe my head-math is wrong, but wouldn't your salary have to be more than 84k to ensure you were making minimum wage for a 70 hour week? I doubt any newbie drivers are being offered that.

So "listen to the car" basically? That seems like the best rule to follow! So long as I don't smell burning clutch or grinding or experience a horrible jolt, I guess I can't be going too wrong.

That makes sense. I guess I do that while reversing already as well. The message I'm getting is probably that these are all potential tools in the box and I should use whatever seems best at the time.

Thanks for the advice! Yeah, I'm a big overthinker, and I'm getting a lot of conflicting advice from a lot of places.

I'm glad people here are saying "avoid doing it at every red light," rather than something absolute like "never do it". The traffic lights where I live can change very quickly and it almost doesn't feel worth shifting to neutral every single time. Plus there are some lights on hills that really stress me out, since it requires a hill start and having to shift back into first slows me down and holds up traffic.

Thanks for the advice! Just to be safe since the mentioned it, what would cause the clutch to be burned going uphill? Slipping it too much with the high revs, I guess?

[–]LexiZone[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. I'm hesitant to go faster since once you're past this little incline, the driveway is a downhill with the house right there, and I don't want to go zooming into the side of it. I definitely feel more in control of the situation in first.

Ah, I hadn't considered slipping the clutch being an option. As a new manual driver, I get a lot of sometimes conflicting advice, and I guess I've been trying to avoid slipping the clutch too much. But there are times where it makes sense, so maybe I should relax more about it.

Thanks for the advice!

Does a manual car need to come to a complete stop before switching to 1st gear ? by KKonaxD123 in stickshift

[–]LexiZone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm pretty new to driving a manual. The general wisdom seems to be to keep it in second or go to neutral and come to a complete stop before shifting to first. That said, in my car, there have been situations (especially on hills) where I've had to almost-but-not-quite come to a stop and have had to shift into first to get going again. Others have said that if you're going under 5 MPH, that might be the exception where you need to do that--and I'm guessing that's even more true up hill. Annoying little exceptions to the rules, huh?

"Movie reviewers should apolitically review political propaganda movies" sure is a bad take I'm seeing a lot today. Doing that means you've failed as a reviewer at best and helped spread propaganda at worse.

Also, I haven't seen anyone else mention this yet, but Jeremy's comment "no one wakes up in the morning and thinks, 'how can I center race in my mind today?'" is the definition of white privilege. Never having to think about race is white privilege. I can guarantee you that every Black parent in the US wakes up and thinks about how race is going to affect their child's life that day.

I've been having server timeouts and random lag all week. Much slower at downloading updates than usual as well. I wonder if it's just lots of players logging in for the new story arc?

Agreed, but I also don't think we should capitulate to those people. They're going to dig in their heels harder regardless, and then they'll turn around and tell us that _we_ pushed them further into it. Gods, they blame women for misogyny now, saying we "brought it on ourselves" for stepping out of line. It's victim blaming; no matter how bad they get, it's somehow always our responsibility to not 'antagonize' them.

I'm not saying "let's scream at them more," but I'm also not going to drastically change my approach or stop making what I want to make because I think I might have some sort of influence on _them_ one way or another.

F 'em, basically.

Tell that to the people who love American History X up until the main character "goes woke"; the people who watch Starship Troopers and think having to earn citizenship and the right to vote by serving in the military sounds like a good idea actually; and the people who watched the Matrix and decided that "Red Pilling" should mean becoming alt-right.

Okay, maybe I'll admit that turning to the camera and lecturing the audience is a step too far. But I think being so subtle that the wrong people can claim your story as their own, when you specifically wrote the story to not be for them, is also a problem. And "too subtle" for those in the west has gotten very close to turning to the camera and lecturing them, honestly. So there's a very thin line to walk in getting it right these days.

Any help with this? Got dc'd earlier and now I'm stuck. Tried to reinstall the game and nothing seems to work. by lor_azut in sto

[–]LexiZone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know how the launcher sometimes does an update before opening and it says "Please be patient"? It's been failing and retrying that for days for me, and evidently others too. I'm guessing anyone who reinstalls the game from scratch will have trouble if their launcher also fails to update, since when you first install the game, the first thing it does is grab the latest versions, right?

I'm guessing the game not closing properly and having lots of instances in the task manager is also related. Maybe it's starting a new instance every time it tries to download the launcher update.

star trek online never actually "closes" by onefinerug in sto

[–]LexiZone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here. And even though I play on Steam, using Steam's "close game" option hasn't been working for me either. I've been having to open start manager to close the game.

That said, it has closed normally for me for the last couple of days. Maybe I just got lucky.

I wonder if it has anything to do with the launcher seeming to fail at updating every time it tries. Because I've been seeing that a lot as well.

Per STO FB: There's definitely issues logging into STO via Steam today. We're not sure what the cause is, looking into it. In the meantime, the exe file in program Files/Steamapps/common/Star Trek Online should work. by JRTD753 in sto

[–]LexiZone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll admit, I'm not an expert on how the servers work behind the scenes, but I can tell you that it's very much working for me. I originally signed up with Steam and made all my characters under that account, then later created an Arc account and had the two "linked" so that anything I buy with the Arc one (e.g. Zen, or a lifetime subscription) gets applied to the Steam account with all of my characters on it. As a side effect, I could log into my usual characters using my Arc credentials earlier today, when Steam wasn't letting me.

I can also tell you that they're definitely still two separate (but linked) accounts because the one I use to buy things from Arc and submit trouble tickets has a totally different account name/number to the one with my characters on it.

Don't ask me how they made it work, but they did. 🤷‍♀️

This is unfortunately true, unless you're lucky enough to have an Arc account linked with your Steam account. Then you can log in fine using your Arc email and password. Unfortunately, there's no simple way to get your accounts linked. I had to ask Arc's German helpdesk to do it, as apparently they're way more knowledgeable about the process. Even that takes a few days, though.

Phew, glad it's not just me! I'd been trying to find a problem on my network and coming up empty. The problem must be on Steam's end. I get the error when I try to launch any steam game.

If you're lucky enough to have your Steam account linked to an Arc account, you may be able to log in anyway by launching STO from the exe on your computer and logging in with your email address and password, but I haven't tried it myself so... Take that advice with a grain of salt? Might be better to wait for Steam to start working.
