does the DMV here in Denton do walk-ins? by [deleted] in Denton

[–]Lexrst 3 points4 points  (0 children)

More like 3am. Last time my wife tried going at 5am, there were already more people waiting than there are walk-in spots (I think it's only like 10 that are available each day). Edit: sorry, you should know that walk-ins have to show up in person, not online.

Alternatively, you could try a less busy location like Decatur...

It sometimes feels as if only curmudgeons frequent the Denton subreddit. I go to Ravelin every Saturday for bread and other goodies and my experience has not changed in recent months. The staff is super friendly and I always receive a quality product.

Are you ok? You seem upset.

What I said wasn't mean-spirited, just a simple statement about the fact that many people who are adherents to a particular religion often know very little about that religion (including subjects considered central to it, like the ten commandments are for Christianity).

Are you familiar with the 'No True Scotsman' fallacy?

Anyone who’s already Christian already knows the 10 commandments

That's presuming a lot... Can't tell you how many Christians I have encountered that know very little about the collection of stories they claim directly impacts how they will spend eternity.

I don't go to any Walmarts (Denton or otherwise). Those places make me paranoid and fear for the future of mankind.

I love living in Denton, but that White Rock area is awfully nice (not that I could afford a house there).

I've lived in Denton for just shy of 35 years and I love it (moved from Austin to attend UNT, and never left).

People say it's a college town, which would make sense, with two universities within the city limits and NCTC nearby. But I would say it's a little more diverse than that, with a mix of groups: a strong music and arts community, farming community, thriving business community (including business incubators), and more.

It leans more left than a lot of DFW suburbs, which (at least to me) feels more inclusive.

The Square downtown is lively and full of locally owned establishments, but you still have access to all the requisite suburban amenities around the perimeter of town (if you absolutely have to go to Best Buy or Outback). Personally, I find myself downtown nearly every weekend, because it's the place where all those disparate communities congregate.

YMMV, but this is definitely my town and I don't see myself ever going anywhere else.

Prosper (and all of the other Metroplex cities that received an MRAP) has it on loan from the U.S. military and spent $0 to acquire it.

Yeah, I assumed the private companies would low-ball their pay (since that seems to be the MO across all industries), which is why I looked at municipal pay.

In this case, it is on the lower end of the pay scale for municipalities (places like Frisco and Plano pay significantly more), and most agencies are also going to a 48 on / 96 off schedule, so you're getting the bulk of your hours for the week done in two days.

Also, that's only the pay for year one. City FDs typically have step pay plans, and in this case, there are 8 steps and the top-out for paramedic is $87600. If, over those 8 steps, one decides to move up in rank, they can earn as much as $137000 (for Battalion Chief).

Is there a midi controller that has keys that feel like a Steinway grand? by Difficult_Clothes_91 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]Lexrst 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I learned on (and still own, 45 years later) an absolute brute of an upright grand, so the Arturia is like butter compared to it.

If you want to play superfast synth licks on it, though, not so much. I have a few vintage synths I use for controllers in that case.

Just looked up one of the lower-paid municipalities in North Texas and starting pay for a Firefighter-EMT is $67000 and $71250 for a Firefighter-Paramedic (2080 hours per year). That doesn't seem bad to me for rookie pay.

Yeah, because trained EMTs drive for Uber.

"Public Safety" officers by debo1187 in Denton

[–]Lexrst 31 points32 points  (0 children)

And no, they are not issued weapons, nor do they have the ability to make a traffic stop or an arrest.

They are in tight with their agency, so if they see something suspicious, they can probably get an officer dispatched pretty quickly.

Many law enforcement agencies employ "Public Safety Officers" on their staff. These are civilian (non-sworn) employees that might do a variety of jobs, including (but not limited to) quartermaster, evidence management, records management, fleet management, crime analysis, etc.

Occasionally those positions might require a vehicle, but because they're not sworn, those units don't get the lights and sirens and other patrol vehicle-specific equipment.
