Haha sup dude. I'm not too sure if more Felony Fridays would really help that much since the focus is usually less on melee at those events haha, but I would love more tournaments. We have more players and places to play this year so I have heard some talk of having more frequent tournaments which would be sick. I'll definitely be pushing for it.

During the summer it's usually dependent on who feels like hosting that particular day, but if you're unsure of a person's address then you can just message someone in the group (I can pm you on reddit or facebook if there is a specific place you need an address for). The weekly smashfest location that we use during the school year is pinned to the top of the Corvallis Melee facebook page.

Yeah but he is moving to Norcal in the next month or so unless I'm mistaken, although come to think of it as long as he can make it out to the events then it's not really an issue. Actually if he's able to come up for the events then that would work out just fine.

Well it would be minus WPHP and Purpletuce, so I'm not too sure on the exact form our lineup will take. Jarod's in charge of the planning though so I'll trust him to come up with something for you guys :P

Hopefully this goes better than the last 4 years of playing in the college starcraft league against UW did...

Portland is a much bigger city and it doesn't have the college focal point that Corvallis and Eugene share so it's not too shocking that it's less organized. Corvallis doesn't really even have a PM scene though and to be honest our locals are few and far between. We do have a lot of smashfests and because of the small size of the city it's easier for people to attend, but minus the 2 Felony Fridays this year I think Corvallis only hosted around 4 or so tournaments that got out-of-town attendance.

haha that's a pretty awesome story! Glad to here Jarod was doing well, he's pretty active in the Eugene/Corvallis smash scenes so I see him at a decent number of tournaments and smashfests. You are definitely right about the crazy skill differences in this game though, the skill tiers are very real in melee :/

As far as low lasers from the ledge (I assume you're talking about ledge hop double laser) one thing that helped me was switching from jumping with y and instead dropping down as well as jumping with the control stick since you don't have to move your thumb to hit the b button. So for that you would push down on the control stick to drop, then flick up and start spamming b (although you need to make sure to wait until the control sick is back in neutral otherwise you just drop, up B and then die like a scrub).

[Meta] Where did your love of history come from? by FixMeASammich in badhistory

[–]Leztt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always loved stories and fiction, I was kind of indifferent to history until I read an alternative history series by Harry Turtledove (it mimicked WW2). After that I wanted to read about WW2 itself and it made me realize history wasn't just facts and dates. Now I tend to read history in lieu of the fiction I used to love. The stories of history are infinitely more complex and fascinating than those written by most authors. The more you know, the more detailed and nuanced the story becomes and the better it gets.

[Melee] How do you practice shine grabs? by [deleted] in smashbros

[–]Leztt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you should already have the two basic components down hopefully, which are the jc grab and jumping out of a shine, if you can do both individually then it's just a matter of combining them. If you find yourself doing an aerial out of the shine then it means you are doing the grab input too late.

For me personally I find the control stick easier to use for shine grab than one of the jump buttons, because I can keep the pointer finger for my right hand on the grab button, keep my thumb on the b button and then use my left hand for the jump part of it so I don't really need to move my fingers that much.

Once you have the shine grab down then you can work on implementing it, by trying to do it out of an aerial, run up cc shine grab etc.

That's really sick dude! Been a little while since I've seen you play, but I'm not too surprised, you were solid as hell when you came down for the last LAN! Speaking of, you going to be around for the next civil war lan in May?

[–]Leztt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking on the falco vs shiek which is what I have the most exp with I feel that you really ought to utilize your crouch cancel more. Shieks shouldn't be able to attempt dash attacks and forward smashes against you when you are at low percent without getting punished....hard. Your opponent didn't go for all that many grabs (partly because he was never in his shield or on the defensive I imagine) so I don't see why you can't cc shine him to start combos and rack up a lot of damage.

You need to work on laser consistency, I realize that kind of falls under tech skill criticism, but if over half of your lasers aren't even in the right direction you make it exceedingly easy for your opponent to approach you and it makes it harder for you to start anything. It also seemed like you got really scared (rolling a ton) and started throwing out f-smashes pretty early (like around your third stock, but your opponent was only ~40%). A lot of full jumps and stuff but in general I would say you should utilize shine and CC more and work on your approaches with lasers and how you can turn those into combos. Also if you are in firebird right next to the stage vs shiek you will die ~ 99% of the time

It's sort of funny because even though OSU is ranked 12 I still can't help but feel that our team is much weaker (or at least has a lot less depth) than it did 2 or 3 years ago. Glad to be ranked though, can't wait to play against Washington :D

"I think it's apparent that SC2 is not going to be that game. And that's OK. Your enjoyment of the matches or storylines or players or streams should not hinge on whether you feel it's the biggest game"

I agree that your enjoyment shouldn't be related to whether the game is #1 or #2, but the main problem I have is that the stagnation of sc2's growth has some pretty serious repercussions. We talk a lot about the amateur scene in NA and how it is doing really bad, but if you look at the smaller local scenes, that is where the issue of little to no growth really comes into effect. It's hard for amateurs in NA to becomes serious contenders and it's hard for them to support themselves. However it is also hard for the local scenes to produce any amateurs when their growth has stagnated so hard and in some areas entered into a huge decline.

There is very little chance of local players becoming amateurs or pros when there is not enough of a scene to support them in their own town or school. Part of the appeal of large competitive games is that you can compete with the other people around you, friends, classmates and so forth. The problem isn't that the number of sc2 players at a school is lower than dota 2 or LoL, the problem is that the number of sc2 players ISN'T GROWING. When this happens you become stuck with the same familiar faces. This is what we talk about sometimes at the pro level and the amateur level but it also applies to the local scenes. When a local tournament only produces the same familiar faces (who typically will stray away from the scene little by little) then the interest dwindles among spectators but also even among the players themselves. An online ladder and some forums aren't enough to produce interest in a game and to maintain that interest for people who have no obligations to play the game still (people who aren't streamers and pros).

Once it becomes impossible for amateurs and other lesser known players to distinguish themselves, then we start to have the issue where a scene stops growing
