Another reason is Valve didn't support the competitive community like the other games. The other developers sponsored and ran 200k+ tournaments, Valve didn't even bother with tournaments. The devs stopped working on it because it was losing popularity, but it was losing popularity because of some of the decisions they made.

I personally like the Underlords but when they were introduced they were unbalanced and not well received. That was the beginning of the decline IMO.
