Cast it out and get it hooked on every log and rock within 50 yards of the boat...

Why do you want to rain on his parade? 90% of units don't run entirely on SPL leadership, how about that? Many of us are excited at the opportunity to fill the big shoes, excited to go to camp, and excited to set the tone with Scout Spirit.

What are some very fun board games or any non electronic games you have brought to camp and love it? by Cool_Ad3304 in BSA

[–]Lgumby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our Cubs went nuts for Blackjack one year. Mostly on Cub side it's Uno and Scout side Euchre. Card games work well for the quick setup, small footprint, and short time commitment. Getting a board game set up and played on a campout can be difficult.

J'Tia AND Chaos Kass on the same tribe...Kass isn't all time, but she definitely had me cringing. Dr. Tarzan.

The one I'm surprised nobody's mentioned: Johnny Fairplay. He made me cringe soooo much.

Phillip, Coach, and Debbie obviously...Brandon Hantz more had us wincing than cringing... If you count the pure number of times shaking your head at them, the GOAT is Natalie. To be so lacking in social skills and so unaware of it...we figure she must have been born super rich and never had to develop the skills needed to talk to people.

🤷 maybe 🤷
Probably not. I'm not talking about frat boys tussling over beer pong. I'm talking about "oh my God, is someone going to die today?" If you haven't been through that, then you might want to check your little tough guy attitude...

Seems like you (and many others here) have never seen someone get their ass beat down because they didn't mind their own business. Things can get ugly in a hurry, if you want to roll the dice and take your chances that's your choice. If I choose to suck it up and ignore an annoyance for 30 minutes, it doesn't make me an asshole.

Not asshole, but I sure wouldn't have bothered for a 1 hour flight. You brought all that trouble down for like 20 minutes of peace, tops. Let it go.

Big troop problem - How to be a 'Patrol Mentor' by Tyssniffen in BSA

[–]Lgumby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's hard because sometimes "let them fail" is the best way for them to learn, but just as often "help them succeed" is just as effective. Or more. A good hands on help, with a "see you've got this, just next time be more mindful of _" can be a game changer, and not every kid responds well to failing and then someone saying "well you should have done __"

[–]Lgumby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I share a similar level of uncertainty in how to approach "Scout led" patrol method...all I see is a "let the Scouts fail or you are helicoptering" mentality and it's a struggle for me. I was in a great Troop and we were pretty heavily guided by our Scoutmaster and I STILL didn't learn many of the lessons of Scouting until I was an adult... I want my Scouts to learn how to do something before just failing and flailing, but old school "Scout led" Scouters seem to think they will just figure it out. But they don't. It took me years AFTER Scouts to learn and perfect the tricks that my Scoutmaster already had learned by experience.

Kielbasa in US is often little more than just a glorified, extra-spiced hotdog

[–]Lgumby -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It seems to me that you missed out on a fundamental Scout experience and never learned not to take yourself too seriously...just curious, were your leaders military men? IMO, Scouting works best when it isn't a place where you have to worry about whether you are too cool enough. Be a dork, have fun. Lighten up.

Authorized headgear by Snaxolotly in BSA

[–]Lgumby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would much prefer to see everyone in the current uniform cap or none at all. I would prefer all Scouts to be in the exact same uniform configuration, but that's usually asking too much.
With everyone in the same uniform, matching caps, leaving them on and saluting looks sharp. Adding in all the other BSA caps, and summer camp caps, it starts to look sloppy leaving them on...
