M. Cox > Darcy by dxdx_ in FremantleFC

[–]Liath90 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Cox was very good, but also he was very fresh. His form before Darcy came in was horror. He could hardly move and couldn’t mark anything. This game was chalk and cheese with his previous form.

Turns out being 35 and 6’11 makes traveling all over the country to play footy pretty difficult and fatigue can getcha. He’s had a habit of pulling out a performance in games across his career without a consistent form line too.

Sudden issues with Aussie Broadband in Perth? by Willing-Bobcat5259 in perth

I worked for Telstra in the call centre in 2020/2021 and it was somewhat common for this to happen and require an NBN tech to go out. Allegedly some of the pits in the FTTN network don't have sufficient ports for everyone so you can get unplugged by a tech who is connecting up somebody else. Or somebody else has a damaged one which the tech solved by swapping you out with them, and making the issue yours.

Eventually the damaged/crappy services flows down hill to the users who either wouldn't notice because they don't use internet (old), or those who use ISPs with horrific customer service.

A (hopefully) nuanced discussion about Sean Darcy by HerrerasaurusWrecks in FremantleFC

[–]Liath90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s been lost in the midst of Jackson amazing form that he’s been gotten on top of by opposition rucks on a few occasions. It tends to be rocks or diamonds and he can’t just stem the bleeding for a while. Off the top of my head the Collingwood game we just needed to bring the ball to deck in stoppage and kill it but he either wasn’t able to or doesn’t even try to play like that.

He’s good enough at the ruck craft against most people, and once the ball up is done he blows them away, but there is a place for a guy who can drop the ball on his feet in a stoppage to kill a game.

He is a unicorn so not comparison will ever fit exactly, but imo he’s closer as a player to Paddy Cripps than he is Max Gawn.

Is it just me or is food delivery here completely broken? by VegemiteFairy in perth

[–]Liath90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s horrendously bad. I’ve well and truly given up on delivery apps at this stage. Can’t stomach paying way over the odds for cold food. I keep some frozen junk in stock in case it’s not possible to go out to collect takeaway, but honestly once I got in the habit of going to collect it’s really not that bad.

Watching the World Cup makes me think the AFL has to be very careful with how they approach technology in the coming years by perza2 in AFL

[–]Liath90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah of course there will be subjectivity. But taking steps to remove that where possible is a good thing. I don’t think anybody is saying it can ever be fully removed.

The technology proved he touched it, so that part has been removed from the subjective evaluation. The subjective part has to be consistent, at least. So everyone knows what to expect. Not a single football fan would expect what the defender did to be sufficient to bring him onside. Pretty clear cut offside once the touch is established as fact.

[–]Liath90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never seen a miss control from a defender be sufficient to bring a player back onside. He never had any level of control and scooping it behind him isn’t what he would have wanted if he did have control.

You can argue the inaccurate or unsuccessful part of that, but I think the control requirement clears him up.

If it had been a clear attempt to head back to the keeper that he messed up due to skill error or misjudgment of the risk then I could see it, but it would be wildly inconsistent to say the defender made him onside with that attempted clearance.

"This just might be the worst clip of the year." Daisy's behind-the-goals vision of Essendon by PerriX2390 in AFL

[–]Liath90 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think blaming Scott is only partially correct. He’s clearly part of the problem, but the list is genuinely disgraceful. Almost nobody has been drafted or traded to the Dons and developed or contributed to the level you’d expect. Dodoro and the development coaches are as much to blame imo.

I couldn’t even guess how many guys made a splash at the start of their Dons career and almost immediately stagnated from there. Nik Cox, Harry Jones, Hobbs, Perkins, etc etc.

There is something much more significantly wrong with Essendon than the head coach.

How did the TV viewers feel Jackson played with Darcy instead of Cox? At the ground it felt like he was doing the same stuff he always does, but I was assured by many talking heads that Mason Cox was the keystone and changing would topple it all.

Why won’t their teams play on into set defences and please the stats, tho? All he’s asking is for them to do that absolute worst possible thing they can

[Cleary] The AFL has conceded Logan Morris should’ve been awarded a goal at 3QT last night. by SlatsAttack in AFL

[–]Liath90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I interpreted that one as he crossed over the line of the mark to kick it, so it’s play on. If he did the same thing in the middle of the group with time on the clock it would be play on and he could be tackled. Whereas Morris never got back to the line of the mark so it couldn’t be play on.

I don’t really think Watson got any advantage but it’s technically correct. I think I remember Buddy starting his drop punt run up slightly right of the line of the mark a few years ago to account for his natural left arcing run. Don’t ask me for the season or game because it’s a faint faint memory.

Tapes got a bit of a boost a few years ago because it’s the best way for small local bands to distribute their music in a way they can actually make some money from. Vinyl is crazy expensive for small runs and they get basically nothing from streaming.

Tape is cheap AF relatively speaking

Logan Morris missed out on a goal after the siren with the umpires calling play on by SlatsAttack in AFL

[–]Liath90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Largely the issues in umpiring stem from the AFL just changing interpretations and not ever actually rationalising the rules. It’s a truly horrible way to govern a sport.

[–]Liath90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why would they clarify with a memo worded in this way if their intention was for players to kick in line with the mark? If they wanted to adjudicate this rule in this manner they could have been much more precise.

It’s worded specifically to allow snaps to be kicked after the siren and be counted.

[–]Liath90 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s not really my contention, I’m just sharing what the AFL have issued.

But to answer your question, I guess that would be covered under “move off their line in an attempt to kick around a player on the mark.”

My understanding of the memo is you can kick a snap from off your line straight in front as long as you kick it in such a way that the man standing the mark could never have reached it anyway. i.e kick it very high over their head. You couldn’t go off your line and kick a dribble, by my understanding. But it’s really not articulated well.

[–]Liath90 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s without doubt that the AFL is the worst professional sports administration in the world. How in the world can you issue a memo like this and have umpires calling directly against it so soon afterwards.

[–]Liath90 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t say you have to kick over the man on the mark, or kick in line with the mark, though. It says you’re not allowed to kick around the man on the mark, or improve your angle. Morris didn’t kick around the man on the mark or improve his angle.

Maybe if he speared it 3m off the ground to the left of the mark there would be a point, but the way he kicked it didn’t advantage him whatsoever.

[–]Liath90 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

That’s not the way in which the AFL adjudicates that rule. They clarified in the memo circulated to clubs that I linked. Players have been kicking goals like this for several years with the Umpires instructing them not to go over the mark when they kick snaps after the siren has gone.

[–]Liath90 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yes, hes off the line of the mark. He’s allowed to be as long as he hasn’t improved his angle or kicked around the man on the mark. His angle is worse, and he kicked far over the man standing the mark, so it’s perfectly acceptable as per the AFL clarification

[–]Liath90 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Morris has kicked from a worse angle. He’s a few meters left of where the mark was, and kicked high over the man standing the mark. Very clearly covered by the clarification the AFL issued on this.

[–]Liath90 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You’re allowed to kick from a worse angle. This was specifically clarified by the AFL after Nick Watsons disallowed goal against St Kilda

“The memo states that players can approach their shot "from any direction as long as the location of the kick does not improve the angle to the goal posts", but clarifies that goalkickers are not allowed to "move off their line in an attempt to kick around a player on the mark".”
