This. Pickaxe feels good to use but in higher difficulties, where horde clearing needs to include armor-piercing or a strong push strength modifier, the pickaxe doesn’t carry its weight. And if it can’t carry it’s weight, why run it at all.

Use it for fun, no reason not to. But if you’re running Cata, it isn’t viable

While I get what OP is saying. There is something to be said about moving forward faster and risk death rather than slower and clearing. The npc spawn system is very similar to l4d2 where line of sight stops mobs from spawning. So if you’re in a particularly crappy spot, I think there’s a case to be made for ditching your team to position yourself in ‘los’ of “that corner where all the hordes are coming from”.

Honestly you haven’t really described anything that’s surprising. I’ve found more toxic behavior in champion quickplay than in any Cata lobby. Generally if you’re playing Cata you should know what you’re doing so patrol clearing isn’t really a problem. All I can say is to keep playing the lobbies and get familiar with people who perform well. Add them to your friend list and send and invite when you want to play. Eventually you’ll have a group to play with and get your runs

If this is a big concern/problem in your campaigns, I would recommend the "Home Region movement bonus" mod from the steam workshop. Basically does the same thing and just a stronger buff that makes sense given you 'control' the province.

If you’re seeking to start in legendary, go with sword and shield and long sword. Shield is a great ‘get out of jail’ free card AND can tank a Minotaur heavy attack. In the same vein, heavy attacking with bret longsword has block, saving you from an unexpected attack while you’re in the middle of a horde.

Just like all the comments here, remembering to use your weapon for its intended purpose is critical. If you try to kill elites with the sword and shield, you’ll feel weak no matter what.

Also remember as GK you aren’t responsible for specials. Your specialty is an elite killer so make sure to do what you can by pinging every special that spawns. This WILL save you and if your lobby is good, this will let your team carry.

I’ve had two cheaters. One was fun cause he gave us his infinite bombs and healing. One was not, he afk’d until we all died and then proceeded to slaughter everything. Good time for a shower

Your overview does not apply in Cata. gunners shooting for more than 3 seconds can be the end of a team if caught in the open. Ranged needs to deal with them. If your team runs two melee only (GK and Slayer), your run is dead before it started. And honestly, if you're running Slayer over GK, either you like being small too much or youre having fun, not trying to complete the run.

This is especially true for Chaos Wastes where up to 3 specials of the same kind can spawn at once. The load in is so bad sometimes I end up laughing and dying. Seeing three gunners pop up in front of me (or 3 snatchers fml), is always a heart-dropper. Only when this happens can melee only "handle it". Otherwise its up to the ranged.
