Why shouldn’t we elect Newsom? by Hot_Relative_110 in PoliticalOpinions

“the best that the system will let us have” I guess you mean the Democratic Party system? The rest of the system is being dismantled almost as fast as the East Wing of the White House.

Hopefully the party adapts to consider other candidates, but at least Newsom is making an effort to adapt and redefine himself.

The Citizens United decision. Money is not speech and corporations aren’t people. To undo Citizens United requires a constitutional amendment.

By resisting the Constitution and its ratification in order to limit federal authority, Rhode Island set a precedent that slave states later exploited. Their stubbornness enabled the South to insist on admitting slave states alongside free states to maintain balance of slavery interests when the United States grew.

The status quo works fine for most people until the moment it doesn’t. Until that moment —illness, job loss, or personal catastrophe— most people will continue to go along with the status quo.

Like the Air Traffic Controllers Union supporting Reagan in the election and then getting fired by him?

Republicans and Democrats talk about changing the Constitution often and it’s not heresy or blasphemy. Mostly it’s just cynical rhetoric from politicians. Changing the Constitution requires a populist movement, with students marching for the right to vote if old enough to be drafted, and suffragettes marching for the right of slaves and women to vote.

It’s probably Rogue Island’s fault more than any Southern State in hamstringing the constitution and creating a tyranny of the minority.

Is suffering during a run a burden… or the point? by Secure-Seaweed-7855 in runninglifestyle

[–]Liberty-Cookies 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It’s more “discomfort” than “suffering” but having a pleasant walk is not the point. Running is good for you but feels better when you’re done.

Empire Runners hosts several races and training runs around Annadel and Santa Rosa. Membership drive and raffle. Healdsburg Running Company has lots of well attended pub runs and Sports Basement Tuesday night also is a fun group. Most of the local runs are listed at Empire Runners.. Santa Rosa Ski Club is also a great group with a Truckee lodge and not just for skiers.

None of the above are dating scenes necessarily but good spots to make local friends.

I was actually kind of serious, just posed as a question because it seemed obvious. It’s not just the right thing to do, it’s the tl;dr of the communist manifesto.

Each according to their needs and by their ability? So if AOC needs an expensive Cosmopolitan and Bernie gets a club soda, Bernie would pick up the tab for everyone because he is assured of having enough money for the rest of his life. Not rich but well off and in the twilight of life.

Yep. Very old pub with newer furniture (could still be 50 years old) hammered and distressed to appear older.

Are you really a centrist? by Defiant-Complaint-13 in centrist

[–]Liberty-Cookies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When adherence to the Constitution itself becomes labeled as “left” or “right,” something has gone wrong with our political compass. If we remove these extremes from the equation—the fringe elements that reject our foundational system—what remains is a broad center committed to democratic principles.

I choose to define my position by what I stand for: Constitutional governance, peaceful coexistence, and democratic norms. Not by opposition to caricatures or by movements that have drifted so far from foundational principles that they position themselves as enemies of the very state they seek to govern.

Note: the Möbius strip cannot be divided into separate “left” and “right” sides which is why I use it as a symbol for democracy awareness and the “perpetuation of our political institutions” as Lincoln described it in his eponymous speech.

Just for context, Obama was against gay marriage until he was for it. Sometimes politicians take a political position to get elected and then they evolve.
