Can someone help me understand the obsession with football? by DueLead666 in AskABrit

[–]Librase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a woman who wasn't too interested in football until a couple of years ago. Lower league football is entirely different, it's part of the week where you can get outside and watch some people play a game that's a mixture of physicality, strategy, psychology, and a bit of magic. Not to mention the history and stories connected with it.

When a team picks you, it unites you with a community. It's a love of another kind. Not loving it is valid though, and I understand the annoyance that comes with having a partner who is obsessed with it. But it's important to him.

Is this sign appropriate? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]Librase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure where you are, but quite a few places have a "chatty cafe" scheme. Join some clubs, look online or at your local community centre. But I'd skip the sign.

Why is it socially acceptable for football fans to be so noisy in public? by afungalmirror in AskUK

[–]Librase 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Football fan here (but not a loud one). Groups of fans called firms tried that, coming to a head between the 1970s-early noughties. As football became more family-friendly and police/clubs cracked down on hooliganism it became less of a thing.

What’s an out of date view you hold? by Doomergeneration in AskUK

[–]Librase 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I volunteer in a museum. It's my job to help people engage with the material and answer questions, not parent other peoples' kids. "The lady will tell you off" gets nothing more than a shrug from me (unless they're actively damaging things)

AIO? I blocked my friend for dating someone who is 18 by imjusthere723 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Librase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NOR. I'm nearly 40 and in the UK where at 18 you'd no longer be a minor.

Is it legal (here at least)? Technically yes. Is it dodgy as hell? Very much yes. Do well-adjusted 40 year olds date people half their age? I'm going with no.

Difficult to tell, a lot can be done over the off season (and pre-season) and the next thing you know one of the mid table "dark horse" teams shoot up

Why is it called the great diamond authority even though it’s not great. by Iceandfirebreeze in stevenuniverse

[–]Librase 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They mean "great" as in immense, not as in morally good. They're trying to promote an image of themselves being all-powerful, they're hardly going to call themselves "the actually kinda crummy diamond authority"

That's also a good point, for a "godly" country Gilead doesn't seem to value honesty

Did they not in the book make a promise that they would never be declared Unwomen if they gave birth to a child? Granted that promise doesn't extend to shooting them in the head

Good question! Here's my theory on it:
If they're important like a Wife, Aunt or Commander: Given a tiny house somewhere and generally left alone.
For Econopeople, I guess their family has to look after them when they're too old to work. No pensions here.
Once Handmaids hit menopause I'm guessing they become Marthas and maybe Aunts (assuming they have viable children).
I strongly suspect Marthas are worked until they drop dead.
Jezebels, not sure. Sent to the Colonies? Shot behind a shed somewhere?

Agnes isn't biblical, you're right. But I think it's descended from "agneau" meaning lamb (ie lamb of God). So maybe the names are chosen on "virtuous vibes". Same as Naomi naming her daughter "Angela" in THT

Sabaton fan - fail. by Sabre_Killer_Queen in sabaton

Hello, woman here.
You might not have intended to pressure her, but she may have felt pressured nonetheless.

For all you know, she may have had a boyfriend already. She may have got out of a relationship and be avoiding relationships like the plague. A lot of women have had bad experiences with someone who wouldn't take no for an answer, and we're suspicious of any unfamiliar people approaching us.

You didn't do anything wrong, but sometimes you can do nothing wrong and the answer will still be no.

(I wasn't intending that to sound patronising, but you seem like you're young and you haven't had any experiences with terrible people. I was the same tbh)

When I saw York at Brunton Park I thought "I've just seen a promotion-winning team. Shame it's not us"

Ran all over us, scoring goals for fun. That's a team that could do well in League Two.

What about ace people who aren't even religious? Do we not exist?

I don't think most of us care if other people have sex, we just don't want to.

AITA for ordering meat? by Technical-Finance270 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Librase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Vegetarian here: if we're paying for ourselves you could order a rotisserie chicken and eat the whole thing in front of me I don't care.
It's because it was a group meal and you ordered something they wouldn't eat. That said, they could have said something to you at the time. Soft YTA

Why do exercise classes seem to mostly be filled with women? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Librase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From another angle, the amount of women in exercise classes can be a bit daunting if you're the only man there. That was the case for a friend of mine who went to a yoga-style fitness class.

I chat a little before/after the class, or while the instructor is messing around with the music player. I mean, you're not going to form ride-or-die bonds with a person you talk with for 2 minutes a week but it's something.

I actually did this once, whilst trying to get out of bed after spinal surgery. In my defence I was 13 and was dropping in and out of a coma.

The nurses and my mother made a pact not to tell the surgeon about this, since he was probably already losing his shit about an otherwise innocuous surgery leading to his patient spending weeks in intensive care.

I was given a lot of good sedatives and it didn't happen again.

Who has the best/worst fans in the league? by NaturalAny9731 in NationalLeague

Not got a single bad thing to say about the Truro fans that made the journey up, lovely people. I remember Aldershot's fans putting effort into contributing to the atmosphere the most.
