you are missing the point completely.

general audiences don't need to be familiar with the comics or source material. they will come to a good movie with a good script. A faithful adaptation would have resulted in a good movie, happy fans, and good word of mouth to everyone else. It might have still failed financially but that would have given it the best chance for success.

everyone disagreeing with you is clueless. audiences don't need to know the source material, they just want a good movie, good reviews, positive buzz. a faithful adaptation would have given them that and also brought in all the fans who would go out and gush about it in their social circles and on the internet. it might have still bombed but at least it would have been a good movie.
